Why CapEx spend is rising-and how hoteliers are spending money | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • Hanson said it’s important to remember that a hotel that looks new and fresh will outperform a hotel that doesn’t.
  • Curb appeal is No. 1
  • Hotels are adding new tech in lobbies, including directory boards with interactive screens and big-screen TVs, he said.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Another trend Hanson sees is that hoteliers are spending money on improvements that offer no additional stream of revenue. For example, a huge area of improvement comes in the way of adding more internet bandwidth.
  •
The article address the importance of today's capital expenditure and how it attracts new and recurring guests to its properties. Some of these capital expenditures are executed for solely esthetic reasons, even adding more bandwidth to the internet is done to show its clientele that they no longer offer just the average features anymore.

How to Combat the Negative Side of Consumer Behavior With Societal Marketing - 0 views

  • Some companies treat corporate social responsibility primarily as a form of branding. For instance, a company that donates 10 percent of profits to cancer research might develop a marketing plan to let the public know about its good works so customers will feel better about buying its products. A more comprehensive approach to societal marketing would include an examination of the company's products and services and what effect they have on the customer and the society.
  • Consumers generally say they want to buy products that are more environmentally sustainable or socially responsible, but that doesn't translate to actual sales if the product costs too much or doesn't perform as well as its rivals. It might seem as if there's a gap between what customers say they want and what they really want, but in reality they want it all. An unpleasant-tasting, expensive brand of fair trade coffee is not going to outsell a delicious and affordable rival just because it is fair trade. However, a delicious and affordable fair trade brand could do very well. The fact that the coffee is fair trade is a benefit to the consumer, but only if the coffee meets the customer's other requirements for taste and price. Effective societal marketing treats the social responsibility aspect as an extra benefit to choosing an already fine product.
  • Sometimes a company can make its marketing campaign more socially responsible by making relatively small changes to a popular product. For example, if a restaurant offers a children's meal option including a grilled cheese sandwich, chips and a soda, it could improve the menu by offering fresh fruit and milk or juice as options. Some parents will still decide to order the chips and soda, but some will choose the fruit and milk. The company is giving customers what they want either way, but by including healthier options the company is doing what it can to have a positive impact on society.

Nail The Basics Of Cybersecurity With Multifactor Authentication (MFA) - 0 views

  • When it comes to the basics of cybersecurity, nothing is so elemental as the password.
  • the simple password has endured as the first and last guardian of consumer and business data.
  • But with the rise of sophisticated hacking techniques, passwords alone can no longer protect against unauthorized access and security attacks.
  • ...22 more annotations...
  • Enter multifactor authentication (MFA). By adding extra layers of security to a user's login process and requiring they enter two or more pieces of evidence (e.g., factors) to prove they are who they say they are,
  • MFA is a great method for boosting protection against everyday threats like credential stuffing, phishing attacks and account takeovers.
  • 1. Passwords alone are no longer enough to protect against security attacks.
  • it's critical every company apply effective security measures to protect their data.
  • to protect business and customer data, it begins and ends with preventing unauthorized account access.
  • MFA is the most direct and effective way to do that.
  • A familiar example of MFA at work is the two factors needed to withdraw money from an ATM.
  • Your ATM card is the something that you have, and your PIN is the something you know.
  • companies can require all employees to verify their identities with two or more pieces of evidence to prove they are who they say they are.
  • 2. Companies around the world (from Fortune 500s to small businesses) are feeling the urgency to adopt MFA — but a knowledge gap persists.
  • It's imperative companies invest in training employees on how using MFA is essential to securing access to both work and personal accounts.
  • industries in our everyday lives — led by social media platforms and financial services — requiring consumers use MFA to secure their personal accounts, both businesses and employees are normalizing the everyday routine of MFA.
  • make the connection between security at work and in their personal lives and understanding they're two sides of the same coin.
  • 3. MFA adoption can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be.
  • By recognizing any technical, change management and financial challenges to user adoption, committing to open communication, and providing the resources and training your employees need, any business can conquer that fear of the unknown.
  • When adopting MFA, prioritize identifying the strongest and most user-friendly authentication method possible for your organization.
  • that means using an authenticator generator app, a hardware security key or a combination.
  • the reality is a large percentage of U.S.-based employees are also consumers with a smartphone in their pocket.
  • on that phone, the employee is already using multiple apps that require MFA.
  • 4. Balance security with ease of use when identifying a preferred authentication method for your organization
  • With options like hardware keys, you often see employees run into issues losing, replacing or breaking them. But a (TOTP) mobile app can be continuously updated in ways that make the MFA process more seamless (e.g, an app that verifies automatically from trusted locations like an employee's home office).
  • authenticator apps on devices like iPhones have the added benefit of extra layers of security at the phone level like PINs and biometrics like Face ID.
  •
This article talks about companies transitioning to multifactor authentication as an added layer of protection of cybersecurity.

Uniform Marketing New Restaurant Technology of the Future - 0 views

  • When Superior Uniform Group (sug) began manufacturing uniforms in 1920, chances are no one in the company ever thought it would launch a media division more than nine decades later.
  • Through a licensing agreement with Eyelevel Interactive, the division offers advertising panels with mobile action codes that can attach to uniforms with Velcro. Customers can scan the mobile action codes, or MACs (similar to the QR codes that many quick serves are including with marketing materials) with their smartphones using popular apps like Microsoft Tag, Android’s ZXing, and various iPhone apps.
  • “What we’re doing is taking the uniform, which is [traditionally] a utilitarian item used to identify employees, and turning it into a flexible and effective point-of-purchase advertising system,” says SUG CEO Michael Benstock.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Of course, the interaction encouraged by such a uniform amounts to more than just looking. Customers would have to wave their phones in the vicinity of an employee’s uniform (in many cases, the employee’s back) to scan the MAC. It’s safe to assume a few customers and employees might find this kind of interaction a little uncomfortable, but de Mattei says none of the brands he is negotiating with have raised serious concerns.
  • McDonald’s would not confirm to QSR whether it is working with SUG or planning to roll out interactive uniforms. Subway spokesman Les Winograd says the company believes the concept of interactive uniforms has “merit,” but “they are not something we are actively looking at right now.” Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold says the Denver-based chain isn’t exploring the option, either. It remains to be seen whether interactive uniforms make sense for quick-serve restaurants. The glaring concern is an obvious one: crewmembers strive to serve their menu items quickly, and having customers scanning employee uniforms may slow down service
  • “My overall opinion of QR codes is really favorable,” he says. “I’m completely convinced that they are very powerful in what they can do for a brand. It’s a big opportunity, but I wonder if uniforms are the place where we’ll see this pop in [quick service].”
  •
In the article "Would Your Crew Wear Mobile Apps?" it talks about a new way of advertising through uniforms. On the back of a crew members uniform there is a QR code and the customer just has to scan the code it shows them coupons and deals the restaurant is promoting. I feel that this way of advertising is easy and fun; people love using technology and what better way to incorporate it then by using your Smartphone! In the article they asked different fast food restaurants if they would use this product and although they thought it was a good idea they felt that it would be taking away from a fast paced environment. In the article it states that traditional media is not what it use to be, ""There are billions of dollars being spent on it, and [traditional ads] are driving consumers to the stores, but at that point consumers still don't know what they're going to buy." Overall, I feel that this product would bring in a lot of customers and it's a great way to advertise things on the menu, I'm all for this idea!

7 Things You Can Do to Make Internet Explorer More Secure - CIO.com - 0 views

  • How well Internet Explorer--or any Web browser, for that matter--protects against attacks and malware greatly depends on whether you keep it up to date and have the right security settings. Here's how to take the proper security measures with Internet Explorer 9 and 10.
  • IE lets you set custom security settings for different zones: Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites. When you visit a website, IE automatically classifies it as in the Internet zone. The exceptions are websites hosted by your local network (say, a site set up for use on your company's network)--then it's Local Intranet--or sites that you've added to the Trusted or Restricted lists beforehand. You can set each zone to a predefined security level and customize the settings as well.
  •
The article by Eric Geier is mainly an informative piece as well as a basic tutorial of Internet Explorer Settings. Geier focuses on security, the core of a browser's purpose next to actual browsing. He provides a few tricks that aren't always set for users, such as tracking protection, a feature that protects your privacy and reduces pop-ups, especially from unwanted ads. The largest focus of the article is what I find most important, and it's most talked about for a reason. Staying on top of a browser's update is essential for not only the browser's performance but most importantly for your computer's security. To put it into perspective, every time you get on Internet Explorer, it's like leaving your house. If you update your browser constantly, you are always making sure the door is locked. But the longer you wait between updates the more likely the door will be unlocked. And if you completely forget to update for an extended period of time it's like leaving the door open for malware, or malicious software.

HNN - Hoteliers adjust to new accounting guidelines - 0 views

  • One goal of the new guidelines was to recognize the increasing globalization of the hotel industry, Temling said.   “Many of the changes are reflective of what’s happening in the world in our industry,” he said. “Chains based in the (United States) have generally adopted the guidelines; that’s not the problem. But we also hope chains domiciled outside this country will accept the changes outlined in the book.”   Some of the changes are small, but symbolic, Temling said. In previous editions of the book, accounting for some employee benefits reflected terminologies used by U.S. companies.   “Up through the 10th edition, we called it FICA or social security for employees’ benefits,” Temling said. “This time around we call it social benefit contribution, which is more universally acceptable.”   Large hotel companies might have more difficulty adopting the new guidelines than will smaller ones, said Michelle Russo, founder and CEO of Hotel Asset Value Enhancement, a hotel asset management and real estate advisory company. She is a member of the financial committee that created the latest edition.   “It’s actually harder for larger operators because they often have many divisions,” she said. Examples she cited affect reporting of telecommunications, labor and segmentation data.   “We created a new (information technology) department, and in a large company that is worldwide that operates on multiple accounting platforms, the mapping process is massive,” she said, adding that some companies have decided to defer adopting the new IT department guideline until 2016.

  • This technology, called Prediction, maximizes fuel and power consumption, which effectively reduces carbon emissions
  • Google has made its environmentally-conscious initiatives well-known
  • French authorities have used Google’s mapping services to determine agricultural regions that should face water restrictions.
  • Google would be nowhere without its data centers.
  • managing to half their data center energy use through practical thinking, using the excess energy to power office complexes, Google has effectively cut down on its environmental impact.
  • Google is now providing information to indigenous tribes on deforestation, giving them the ability to track and prevent the atrocity from taking place.
  • cutting down on the emissions of data farms or having goats roam Google’s campus to eliminate the need for fertilizer and lawn mowers, the company has always strived to cut down on greenhouse gases.
  • Google’s long-term goal of running entirely on renewable energy is growing closer and closer.
  • Google is constantly searching for ways to ensure that it never consumes excessive gas.
  • Instead of trying to purge carbon from its systems, Google invests in “off-setting” its carbon emissions by investing in green initiatives that would not have the funding to survive otherwise.
  •
This article expounds how Google is contributing to the future green advancements of the world by implementing them in their every day operations. Although developing next-generation consumer electronics is an extremely lucrative sector of technology, Google has shifted their thinking away from the immediate consumer electronics field, moving towards the development of green technology. The article further mentions Google's wide-range of environmentally-friendly initiatives which includes the development of an application plug-in that would help automobiles determine where the driver is going that in turn reduces energy use, incorporates renewable energy, and offsets carbon emissions. Also, despite the large amount of Google data centers, Google has managed to cut their energy use in half through practical thinking that included purchasing a wind farm in Iowa with plans of running entirely on renewable energy in the near future. The company also made it a point to cut down on greenhouse gases by having goats roam their Google campus to eliminate the need for fertilizer and lawn movers. In conclusion, by adopting unconventional techniques for effectively lowering its environmental impact, the company has become a model example for more companies to think outside of the box and focus on implementing green technology in an efficient and innovative manner.

Technology Could Help Enhance Security At Hotels | By Suresh John - 0 views

  • In a day and age of increasing insecurities, it is time that we take proactive measures to protect our guests, our own selves, our industry and our world. Technology comes to the rescue, yet again.
  • There are simple ways in which each one of us can ensure that our surroundings are secure.
  • Upon entry into the property, it is vital that a guest’s baggage is scanned and the baggage count is added to his data for cross verification during the check-out,
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • Guest history modules
  • a special report
  • The House Keeping module
  • In addition, all employees must be allowed access only into their areas of work.
  • The next step would be to have a stringent recruitment procedure in place.
  • CCTV surveillance
  • an online central passport and ID card verification mechanism must be introduced,
  • A communication engine can be further used to send out pre-defined messages,
  • simple technology put to effective use,
  •
Terrorism attacks on international hotels have turned the industry's focus on security issues. No doubt about it, both government and hospitality entrepreneur pay more attentions on security after September 11, 2001. It is important for hotels enhance security by using technology. Hotels use Vehicle Management System to tab all vehicles entering the property. This VMS also can be tagged with the guest information, drivers' information and vehicle number. Hotel should use the guest history modules to store the information about every guest especially for those 'first time guest'. The information includes the copy of passport detail of the international guests, guests' flight detail, an emergency contact number and copy of photo registration cards. The house keeping module makes report of Sleep-out guest. This system can share the occupancy reports and nationality wise occupancy report automatically with local police. Also the incoming call can be tracked. Hotel should have a stringent recruitment procedure in place. Hotel can use biometric access to restrict employees only allowed access their working place. The gate-pass system, vehicle management system and biometric access control system ensure only authorized staff and vehicles are allowed into the property. The online central passport and ID card verification mechanism can automatically verify the document against data available with the security agencies. The communication engine can send message to stuff, supervisors, in house guests and authorized external security bodies about the emergency like suspicious guest, fake passport and so on. Effective use these technology can save the hotels from the worse that can happened.

Hospitality industry was affected by terror attacks. This article pointed out how new technology increased security in a property. For instance, having an able Vehicle Management System can keep a tab on all vehicles entering the property. This can also be tagged with your Guest History data, enabling tagging of vehicles with in-house guests. The Vehicle Management systems also have room for adding Driver and Vehicle number details to the database. Upon entry into the property, it is vital that a guest's baggage is scanned and the baggage count is added to his data for cross verification during the check-out, in order to ensure that no undesired material is left behind. Guest history modules in a property management system would also prompt for extra information to be noted for a first-time guest. On check-in, a photo registration card must be printed and handed over to the guest. The photo can be stored in the database and also compared with the central list of criminals / suspects identified by the authorities through an online module that should be made available to all the hotels by the central bodies. a biometric access control can be interfaced with the property management system, restricting a front office executive from entering into the Kitchen area. Also, only authorized supplier staff and vehicles must be allowed into the property.
  •
This article gives us some tips on how technology could help enhance security at hotels. By summary the article, we can find out that the technology can help enhance security at hotels in maintaining copy of passport or ID card of all guests, noting an emergency contact number always, storing data at an off-site location for easy access in case of mishap, installing a biometric access control system for in-house and supplier staff, scanning baggage and maintaining baggage count of each guest and cross-verify on check-out, and monitoring sleep-out guest report closely. By using these simple technology, hotels can save a lot, and make hotels secure.
  •
The hospitality industry is hassled by the terror attacks at luxury properties, so it is important to use technology to protect the guests. A Vehicle Management System can be used to keep watch on all vehicles entering the property. The property management system is used from check-in to check out to verify the baggage and guests. A stringent recruitment such as biometric access can prevent unauthorized staff or guests step into the specific area. Also, there is an online central passport and ID card verification can verify the guests' identification and give an alert on a fake ID or passport. All these measures can help to prevent worst things from happening.

Adding QR Codes to Your School Yearbook - 0 views

  •
This weekend my mom told me about how my brother's high school is moving towards a digital yearbook. I was shocked at first and then amazed! She easily sent me a barcode via email and then I downloaded the "shopper" app and watched my brother's yearbook on my phone. I thought it was very cool and a smart way to save money on yearbooks. Not only could it reduce the amount of pages in the yearbook but it can also enhance the amount of pictures to remember memories. While I was watching the "homecoming clip" of pictures there was probably 300 or more photos on the video for one barcode! Adding QR codes (QR stands for Quick Response) to school or college yearbooks, or annuals, to enhance or expand content just makes sense. The printed page by its very nature is very limiting. QR codes, a type of 2- D barcode, can be included by yearbook ad...

Google Hotel Finder revisited - 7 views

  •
This is an interesting article about Google, who is quickly becoming a big name player in just about every business segment out there. The article addresses Googles new search tool called Hotel Finder, which is still in testing phases. This tool is designed to make it easier for users to find, compare, and book hotels, by drawing on a map around an area they want to stay in a certain location or city and it lists the hotels in the search area, with prices, availability, star rating's and reviews. In addition it lets you filter the results by price, price compared to usual, Hotel class, and user reviews, and allows the user to book directly through the hotel or through an intermediary site with a click of a button. This article also talks about a possible downside to Googles new service in the online travel agency segment. The article explains how some are concerned, because Google is placing comparison ads in premium space on top of the Google search results for hotels, which when clicked by a user takes the them to the full Google site and pushes OTA sites like Expedia, Hotels.com, and Orbitz and hotel websites farther down the search results list, which is making them pay more for premium Comparison Ads. Also the OTA's are concerned about how the Price Per Click may go up, making the OTA's pay more to Google. I went on and played around with Hotel Finder, and I have to say it is very easy to use, and allows you to really customize your experience and pick exactly where you want to stay. http://www.google.com/hotelfinder/#search;l=miami+florida;d=2012-01-22;n=1;v=l;r=0;s=m;fv=
  •
I love the part of the Google Hotel Finder about the comparison ads that help me know how much I would pay if I book the same hotel from other websites by only visiting one Google Hotel Finder website. I hate to search the same hotel on different websites to choose the best price. It costs me much time to make a plan of travel. The page of Hotel Finder is clear and easy to understand how to use it. All results of hotels would be sorted by price and I could get best price fast. Yesterday was my first time to use Hotel Finder and I used it just like I already knew how to use. I don't need to spend much time to study the search website and the page has several recommended words to help me get what I want.

TRAVELCLICK AND GOOGLE IMPROVE ADVERTISING ON GDS - 0 views

  •
It introduce that as the reservation online, GDS become more and more important. It makes booking tickets more efficiency than travel agents. Global Distribution Systems is a worldwide computerized reservation network which used as a single point of access for reserving airline seats, rooms, rental cars, and other travel related items by travel agents, online reservation sites, and large corporations. From this article, the news is that now advertisers have a new level of sophisticated functionality and transparency for GDS ad placement that is currently unrivaled elsewhere online. Both the ad serving and travel agent hotel shopping environments have been identified and leveraged unique predictive characteristics in travelclick and doubleclick. About the result of the research and corresponding development there are two improvements for advertising on the GDS. The first one is DRU, Dynamic Rate Update, instantaneously inserts a hotel's BAR-specific to actual check-in date-into the ad copy displayed to the audience. And the second one is a next-generation methodology isolates and identifies advertising-enabled travel agencies and measures the hotel booking revenue that they produce in participating GDS. Now the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) has been helpful in developing travelclick's DRU and advertising-enabled hotel booking methodology. Because today market competition is very high, best available rates to travel agents for bookings made on the GDS is very necessary.
  •
Yes. I really like the Global Distribution System which makes our life more easier. When I plan for a vacation, I could search the information from the system and choose from different options and make the decision to book tickets and make a reservation in hotels.

Macaroni Grill rolls out interactive mentoring system | Nation's Restaurant News - 1 views

  • The initiative involves automated analysis of point-of-sale-system data to determine, among other things, where servers perform below their same-restaurant peers in different sales metrics, such as number of appetizers or desserts sold nightly, the companies said.
  • The mentoring system also represents “an opportunity to enhance guest service,” according to Brandon Coleman III, Mac Acquisition LLC chief marketing officer.
  • Coleman said the mentoring program’s comparative analysis of wait-staff members on a restaurant-by-restaurant basis, as opposed to using chainwide norms for such comparisons, improves the accuracy of its findings and staff buy in. That’s the case, he indicated, because chainwide performance norms might not reflect the very real impact on sales and menu mix at specific restaurants of such factors as location, climate and regional consumer dining preferences.

Romano's Macaroni Grill is rolling out to all 181 company restaurants a system that helps servers boost sales and guest satisfaction by combining data analysis with personalized coaching. Great article on how the Macaroni Grill Chain implemented an interactive mentoring system to boost performance and sales of wait staff based on automated analysis of information from the point of sale system. This data was used in small part to determine the areas in which server performance showed room for improvement. This data was measured against other restaraunt peers in various sales metrics as a point of comparison. The program also involved follow-up where staff trainers communicate with restaurant managers to report program results. Think this is a great way to show hard data in the system to further improve levels of service, as well as a great on-going sales training tool. The article did not say which point of sale system the chain uses.

I really like this system cause it makes the management so effective. By using this system, manager will recieve information about the areas in which each server has room for improvement weekly which may help managers to figure out the potential problems in their management.
  •
It is a so smart system that makes it easy to analyze and control the operation of restaurant. I think it helps manager save a lot of time and costs due to automated analysis of point-of-sale-system data and comparison with others! What a wonderful system!

Cloudtise Partners with Revel Systems to Provide Innovative Cloud Advertising | Virtual... - 0 views

  • This partnership will allow Cloudtise to integrate their innovative cloud advertising system with Revel Systems’ iPad POS, helping gain valuable information about client trends.
  • Revel Systems iPad POS provides a API that Cloudtise can pull data it needs to create adds in real time for that locaized area.
  • Cloudtise will then provide that information to merchants, so they can target their ad campaigns not only to a demographic but to a local audience that is more likely to shop with them and be in the store’s area.
  •
This article is really interesting because it incorporates two concepts that we have touched on in class, cloud systems and Points of Sale (POS) systems. Cloudtise, is a type of cloud advertising service that is part of the new online marketing trend that allows businesses use real time data for advertising to consumers. Its versatile form allows both users and consumers to instantly update and gather information. By partnering up with Revel System's cloud based Apple iPad POS system, it will help businesses obtain data about client trends. The coalition enables Cloudtise to mold their data based on the geographical area and use data to create ads in real time for specific areas. Using the POS system, Cloudtise will be able to give businesses information so that they can target ads to demographics in local and specific areas that are the most likely to buy the products. Businesses will be able to track inventory levels, customer characteristics, and details from local competitors that will boost their knowledge of what products sell best and to whom. The overall advantage will be providing information what advertising campaigns work and which do not. I think this is a great way for businesses to gain a competitive advantage in their market because consumers are moving toward an instant gratification plane, where they expect products and services immediately. Using cloud and POS systems as an advertising tool will enable users to specifically target consumers and adapt to them instantly.

This article, although posted in March of 2011, focuses on the misleading ads posted online by hotels. "Photo fakeouts" present "breathtaking views that sometimes owe a lot to the marketer's imagination or reflect additional luxuries not found in the real hotel rooms." Oyster.com has undercover researchers book into these hotels and take photos of the what the rooms and views really look like and then they post them on the website. Although what the hotels are doing is technically not illegal, this is a prime example of invalid information and why what you see on the Internet is not all valid.
