Brett Zongker of Huffington Post reports how the $1 million federal grant for the Digital Public Library of America helps spread digital humanities for the nation. The plan is not only to digitize books, but to build systems for libraries and incorporate partnerships such as Google Books to maximize free access for everyone. The reality is that such a project will take more than a one million dollar donation, but it is a growing start to this digital library. Zongker reports the possibility of incorporating the European Union's digital library (Europeana digital library collection) with the Digital Public Library of America.

This post gives a brief overview of the various topics and articles presented in the third issue of the Journal of Digital Humanities. The focus for this third issue is more on the process of the transition from analog to digital rather than just focusing on the starting points and the end products. Inside, Craig Mod tells how analog to digital is more of a two-way street rather than a one-way street while discussing physical books and ebooks. Matthew Booker shows how digital productions can be used to better understand the past. Three new projects in the digital humanities are also showcased in a special section of the publication.

Audrey Altman is set to give a presentation at the University of Iowa entitled, "Attck of the Digital Map! The Wonderful Monsters We Create When Humanities and Technology Collide." In her upcoming presentation Audrey will discuss both historical analysis and digital mapping and the requirements that both bring to the table individually in any given project. Both are individually composed of different aspects and Audrey will try to discuss the pros and cons of both tools when used together simultaneously for one project. Altman will also highlight on the project that she and her undergraduate students have embarked upon this semester that attempts to utilize the two aspects into one project. She will attepmt to delve into the findings, triumphs, ailures, and education gained by she and her students throughout the whole experience.

This short blog post announces and advertises Audrey Altman's upcoming talk about digital mapping. This talk is designed to discuss how historical analysis of maps and digital mapping require different sets of skills and methodologies. She is speaking from the context of a project she is heading which is which is involving undergraduate students in to creation of map-based documents for an archive on Iowa Latino/a history. Her talk is going to talk about both problems and surprises involved with the project and digital mapping.

This short article for the 2012 American Studies Association Annual Meeting represents a call for digital humanists to collaborate and propose ways in which American Studies and Digital Humanities can be transformed to be better address concerns such a marginalization. Provided proof that this is possible, the article highlights such "digital collectives and social movements" such as Crunk Feminist Collective, "shit [people] say" and artists offering a "productive [exploration] of digital productions and methods." The article also highlights in particular the #transformDH movement, and provides links to some of the articles and websites utilized by the group.

This article highlights three large uncertainties of the Micha Cardenas about the digital humanities: is queer new media rare or is analysis of it rare, if there is something "conservative, even sellable" that is present in the digital humanities, and can queer theory, new media, or the digital humanities "disturb hegemonic systems." Although the article does not answer any of these questions, it discusses the history of Queer Theory as "hip, trendy," and its potential reflection in the digital humanities. These questions also arise out of a concern that discussions in digital humanities, particularly CCS, "can run down a road that is very conservative."

Digital Humanities 2012 was a conference held in July of 2012 with the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations. ADHO is an umbrella organization meant to promote digital research and teaching within the humanities disciplines. Originating in 1989, the Digital Humanities 2012 conference was held at the University of Hamburg in Germany this year. The website contains all of the conference activities as well as many of the presentations in the form of podcasts.

The NEH's Office of Digital Humanities announces 5 institutes that will receive government grants to further their research. Included are the University of Texas at Austin's HiPSTAS, the University of Maryland, College Park's Digital Humanities Data Curation, George Mason University's Another Week | Another Tool - A Digital Humanities Barnraising, Folger Shakespeare Library's Folger Shakespeare Library Summer Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities: "Early Modern Digital Agendas," and Arkansas State University's Humanities Heritage 3D Visualization: Theory and Practice.

This is another blog in the Dan Cohen series. In this one in particular, Cohen opens calling digital journalism and digital humanities "kindred spirits". He believes that these two areas of concentration would greatly benefit from working together. The areas in which would be the most profitable from partnership are listed and discussed. A few include use of common tools, platforms and infrastructures, and the idea that developers and technologists should be partners.

This event is promoting digital teaching to show how looking at an object or text digitally can produce different aspects that would not have been found otherwise. Undergrads typically are able to do some work digitally but lack how to interpret it. Through the collaboration with students they are able to build digital artifacts instead of using technology for media purposes only. This event will show students how to build and interpret digital humanities by showing different projects from scholars that are knowledgable in digital humanities

This is an opportunity for people who want to learn more about digital humanities and how to research and teach it. Digital expertises will show their digital projects and form small groups that shows technologies and skills to get started on their digital project. At the end of this event, participants will have a plan how to start their digital humanities project and have resources that can help them in their field.

A literature teacher and researcher who is very fond of books and texts has realized the importance of a digital education. She likes the digital aspect of researching information because if information is given digitally it gives people around the world access to it. This can create a better education for people around the world and connect people who have the same interests. She focuses on discussing Digital Humanities that focus around literature and arts so that once more people become digitally connected, humanities people can demonstrate their skills and expertise that are relatable to people around the world outside of a classroom or library. She knows the importance it is for the 21st century to have easier access to more humanities knowledge that can be shown everywhere.

Alan Lu and William G thomass III are humanities chairs with a long involvement in digital issues who have experienced budget cuts in regards to digital technologies, which are driving changes in higher education. They believe humanities faculty members, chairs, and adminstrators right now have a choice. This choice consist of taking no systematic action on the digital humanites front, and to let the long term digital future build for them. The other option is for humanities faculty, chairs, and adminstrators to plan how to intergrate the digital humanities systematically throughout the different departments.

This program is designed to fund the implementation of innovative digital-humanities projects that have successfully completed a start-up phase and demonstrated their value to the field. These projects help us better understand the central problems in the humanities, and they also raise new questions in the humanities which help develop new digital applications and approaches for the use in the humanities. The digital humanities Implementation Grants programs seeks to identify projects that have successfully completed their startup phase and are well positioned to have a major impact. These grants involve, Implementation of computationally bases methods or techniques for humanities research; implantation of new digital tools for use in humanities research; implementation of new digital tools for use in humanities research, public programming, or educational settings; efforts to ensure the completion and long-term sustainability of existing digital resources; studies that examine the philosophical or practical implications of the use of emerging technologies in specific fields or disciplines of the humanties, or in interdisciplinary collaborations involving several fields or disciplines; or implementation of new digital modes of scholarly communication that facilitate peer review, collaboration, or the dissemination of humanities scholarship for various audiences.

This post focuses on the group Weigle Information Commons (WIC) and their thoughts and ideas after attending a Digital Humanities event titles "Libraries, Labs, and Classrooms: Locating the Digital Humanitites." The WIC fit into the categories discussed and expanded on the ideas presented at the event by asking themselves, "how can WIC promote DH projects among our students and faculty and provide the resources to make such studies come to life?" The WIC then outlines some ideas and projects they have to promote "digital publics" through digital humanities work.

Dan Cohen's transcript of his anonymous speech at Harvard on March 1, 2011 provides insight into the demands scholars have digitization efforts and digital archives. Cohen identifies five major demands on the part of scholars: reliable metadata, the ability to experience serendipity, an interface to handle differing modes of research, a representation of the physical book, and open APIs to accommodate the demands digital libraries cannot anticipate. Dan Cohen's goal is to borrow the best aspects of a physical library - the ability to stumble upon new material readily as well as some measure of its tactile feel - with the ease of use of a well designed digital archive.

This blog article by Stanley Fish discusses how digital humanities is seen by others in positive and negative ways. Some people find that digital humanities is a "monstrous terrain" because it destroys traditional humanities and that not all authorship of online sources are accurate. On the other hand, digital humanities allows students to use a variety of resources with conducting research. Stanley explains one of the challenges in digital humanities is to spread the awareness of such a field.

This blog post created in anticipation of a panel on undergraduate work and research in the digital humanities creates many questions and ideas for discussion at the panel. The author invites others to share input in hopes of turning it into a discussion to bring forward to the panel at the 2013 Digital Humanities conference. Among these questions and ideas are questions of the best way to incorporate project-based digital humanities research approaches in the undergraduate classroom as well as designing curricula to incorporate Digital Humanities into the coursework while still including traditional humanities disciplines.

At the Digital Studio for Public Humanities, Kyle Moody attempted to define digital humanities in one sentence: "open and accessible research and content creation, distribution, and evaluation by persons able to use or utilize technology." In his definition, all people are included whether they are coders or not, a notable difference from many other digital humanists' definitions. Moody discusses how the digital humanities and technology are helping to blur the line between those accessing and consuming content and those creating content. This active reaction to what is being consumed helps developers to see what is wanted and needed and adjust their content based on public reaction. He left his audience with the open question of whether or not the academy has the responsibility to give the public more control over what scholars produce as well as if the academy should be the benevolent curator of cultural content.

The Haiti Digital Library is an online library available in English, French, and Kreyol that is meant to serve as a guide and portal to resources all about Haiti, for both its citizens and scholars interested in the country. The content hosted on the website includes both historical materials related to the country as well as published works by Haitian authors throughout time. They are currently accepting comments and suggestions for works that the public would like to see digitized and uploaded to the archive.

A professor used her Women's Studies class as a way to test out the use of digital humanities in the undergraduate classroom. The assignment was to create an online archive of every issue of the feminist magazine "Conditions" as well as a presentation over the issue they chose. In doing so, they were required to scan in every page of the magazine and edit them on computer to fit together uniformly. At the end of the assignment period, she submitted the archive into the "Lesbian Poetry Archive" for public viewing and use. Through working on this archive, she became convinced that the PDF format will continue to be the main format for converting physical documents into the digital medium. This is due to the format being almost universal in digital humanities and the likelihood of it continuing to be a relevant file format for many years to come.
