Talk: Attack of the Digital Map! - 1 views

    Audrey Altman is set to give a presentation at the University of Iowa entitled, "Attck of the Digital Map! The Wonderful Monsters We Create When Humanities and Technology Collide." In her upcoming presentation Audrey will discuss both historical analysis and digital mapping and the requirements that both bring to the table individually in any given project. Both are individually composed of different aspects and Audrey will try to discuss the pros and cons of both tools when used together simultaneously for one project. Altman will also highlight on the project that she and her undergraduate students have embarked upon this semester that attempts to utilize the two aspects into one project. She will attepmt to delve into the findings, triumphs, ailures, and education gained by she and her students throughout the whole experience.

    This short blog post announces and advertises Audrey Altman's upcoming talk about digital mapping. This talk is designed to discuss how historical analysis of maps and digital mapping require different sets of skills and methodologies. She is speaking from the context of a project she is heading which is which is involving undergraduate students in to creation of map-based documents for an archive on Iowa Latino/a history. Her talk is going to talk about both problems and surprises involved with the project and digital mapping.

World History Atlas & Timelines since 3000 BC - 1 views

    GeaCron is a project for mapping the entire world with not just the geography, but the history of the locations as well. Its purpose is to provide a map where researchers and students can select a time period and see what historical events were occurring at that same time period all over the world in as many countries as possible. Currently, the maps cover political events starting at 3000 BC, and the newest events being archived for modern day will be available at the start of 2013. The maps allow for a variety of features including relief maps, zooming, navigating in time, and embedding digital media sites to further enrich the information on the geographical areas through time.

    A professor came and spoke to students and faculty about how students in higher education can integrate mapping tools into the classroom. They use these projects as organizational templates, spatial analysis, metaphors, graphs, and charts. She posts questions that should be asked before choosing the mapping approach for their projects.

The String of Pearls, or the Barber of Fleet Street: Cartography of the Counterfactual - 1 views

    HASTAC Scholar Rebecca Nesvest announces her work in testing out new software meant to be a digital accompaniment to texts. In her example, she is using "The String of Pearls, or the Barber of Fleet Street" to map out the locations from the story onto a map of the actual Fleet Street in London where the Demon Barber Sweeney Todd was said to live and work. Her work will also include historical evidence for and against the reality of the events depicted in the story that have always been said to be entirely true.

    This article is one of my favorites! Ms. Knowles chose to ask a question that could not be aswered....until they found a way by means of digital humanities. The questions was simply this, "What could General Grant see in his view at Gettysburg?" This question sparked a menas to find an answer by digitally mapping the terrain at the time on the battle in coordination with Grant's height/ location. This success led to a Project wtih Knowles and Paul Jaskot concerning the concentration camp, Auschwitz, and another similar project done about the Salem Witch Trials by Benjamin Ray. Such great research and visual representations.

    Anne Kelly Knowles, a geographer at Middlebury College in Vermont, posed a simple question that could not be accurately answered before: What could the confederate general Robert E. Lee actually see during the battle of Gettysburrg. In order to answer this question Ms. Knowles team began by creating a digital map of the areas topography at the time of the battle. Then, the group as whole began to replicate the view Lee would have had by generating what is known as a viewshed from a point 75feeet above the terrain the distance from the ground to the cupid floor plus Lee's eye level standing in his.

By using charts, maps, diagrams, and photos, students can get a different and more effective learning experience.     This brief presentation on the Fifth Annual Graduate Student Conference on World History gives an example of some of the things the field of History is looking to track and how the field is expecting to change. The conference is requesting papers on the topics of cultural mobility, political movements, and networks utilized for the transmission of ideas. More of interest to digital humanists though is the category of Mapping Movements, with an explicit focus on the new technologies and digital humanist methods being developed that can be utilized to assist this process.

    This 2010 article provides some insight into the grant proposal process for the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants, provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. George Williams describes the process of grant proposals as "lightning rounds" in which the project director is allowed only two minutes and three slides for their presentation. 46 projects were presented, and Williams provides a rough categorization for the projects, such as mapping or publishing projects, and provides a list of examples for each category.

    This is the main page of Stanford University's projects in digital humanities, mainly the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis (CESTA). CESTA is a digital humanities project comprised of several projects, that span a wide variety of content areas and use different approaches. Two of the three projects mentioned (Mapping the Republic of Letters and Spatial History Project) seem to be a collaborative research effort to digitally map a concept. The last project under CESTA, Literary Lab, seems to be an archive of papers, dissertaions, and research by the current students and staff members of Stanford.
