    This blog post created in anticipation of a panel on undergraduate work and research in the digital humanities creates many questions and ideas for discussion at the panel. The author invites others to share input in hopes of turning it into a discussion to bring forward to the panel at the 2013 Digital Humanities conference. Among these questions and ideas are questions of the best way to incorporate project-based digital humanities research approaches in the undergraduate classroom as well as designing curricula to incorporate Digital Humanities into the coursework while still including traditional humanities disciplines.

    This article written by Rebecca Frost Davis discusses the use of crowdsourcing in order to create a stronger integration with digital humanities and undergraduate curriculum. Having students work on large scale collaborations allows for professors and scholars teach them knowledge in a more creative way. While crowdsource projects may not cause students to take on professional work in the digital humanities field, it will nonetheless cause them to be more aware of how to use digital humanities in their real lives. Frost confronts the problems of such projects, such as the issue of what kind of project best fits into each class and the time constraints encountered. Moreover, whether the students each have access to computers inside and outside of class. With matters such as these properly organized, Frost encourages crowdsourcing projects for undergraduate students.

    Jouranlist Steve Kolowich reveals how digital humanities can help education, especially through undergraduate work. He explains that most undergraduate students are unaware of how to use digital tools in their research and the best way to confront this issue is to teach them to work with metadata and design databases. Teaching digital humanities is a fundamental shift as well, because grading items such as crowdsourcing projects is quite different to grading a multiple question exam. Like many other professors in the digital humanities field, Professor Laura McGrane believes if the job is done right, students will be able to conquer research in a more knowledgeable way.

    Audrey Altman is set to give a presentation at the University of Iowa entitled, "Attck of the Digital Map! The Wonderful Monsters We Create When Humanities and Technology Collide." In her upcoming presentation Audrey will discuss both historical analysis and digital mapping and the requirements that both bring to the table individually in any given project. Both are individually composed of different aspects and Audrey will try to discuss the pros and cons of both tools when used together simultaneously for one project. Altman will also highlight on the project that she and her undergraduate students have embarked upon this semester that attempts to utilize the two aspects into one project. She will attepmt to delve into the findings, triumphs, ailures, and education gained by she and her students throughout the whole experience.

    This short blog post announces and advertises Audrey Altman's upcoming talk about digital mapping. This talk is designed to discuss how historical analysis of maps and digital mapping require different sets of skills and methodologies. She is speaking from the context of a project she is heading which is which is involving undergraduate students in to creation of map-based documents for an archive on Iowa Latino/a history. Her talk is going to talk about both problems and surprises involved with the project and digital mapping.

    This event is promoting digital teaching to show how looking at an object or text digitally can produce different aspects that would not have been found otherwise. Undergrads typically are able to do some work digitally but lack how to interpret it. Through the collaboration with students they are able to build digital artifacts instead of using technology for media purposes only. Short segments follow students who discuss the meaning of digital humanities, why there are passionate about the field, and different projects they are involved in. For example, a student expresses the difference in publishing for an audience who will be online and the responsibility of the researcher to approach the project in the best way to present it to a larger audience. Collaboration among researchers in the field is noted to be one of the most important aspects in Digital Humanities.

Teaching and Making Digital Archives - 4 views

    A professor used her Women's Studies class as a way to test out the use of digital humanities in the undergraduate classroom. The assignment was to create an online archive of every issue of the feminist magazine "Conditions" as well as a presentation over the issue they chose. In doing so, they were required to scan in every page of the magazine and edit them on computer to fit together uniformly. At the end of the assignment period, she submitted the archive into the "Lesbian Poetry Archive" for public viewing and use. Through working on this archive, she became convinced that the PDF format will continue to be the main format for converting physical documents into the digital medium. This is due to the format being almost universal in digital humanities and the likelihood of it continuing to be a relevant file format for many years to come.

    In her blog Erin Bell discusses a digital humanities project called the Cuyahoga County Archives, a collection that focuses on sharing the history of Cuyahoga County. It mainly explores the transportation and infrastructure of Cuyahoga county, but also contains police report documents dealing with the Kent State Shootings in 1970. Undergraduate interns collaborated together to scan and search for these items to share, all for free access.
