  • Maybe it would be more beneficial if teachers, after their DIY PD, could point to evidence of successful PD in their lessons.
  • It also turns PD from theoretical to authentic learning.
  • Teachers could point to a combination of online and face-to-face meetings that enabled them to accomplish a certain task with their class, and verify it by having an administrator observe the results
  • modeling their newfound methods to their colleagues,
  • What if the DIY PD does not yield an effective improvement?
  • administrator to not just point out the flaws, but to counsel the teacher on improvements
  • observation from a judgmental assessment into a learning experience

Estie's Gifts & Treasures: Thing #23 - Reflections - 1 views

  •
This is precisely why more of us should be implementing the "23 things" pd program with our teachers. Estie Cuellar from Houston Texas did an amazing job discussing her learning journey and did an amazing job blogging it as well. This is very impressive and displays the transformational nature of becoming immersed in these tools. I look forward to seeing what happens in her classroom! Again, I believe that embedded pd (professional development that is in pieces as part of our day) rather than binge pd is much more transformational! This is proof!

11 Tools for the 21st Century Learner - 5 views

  •
This is a course for Spring Branch ISD which uses a blog as the framework. I also love how 9 hours of professional development is being given for the educators in this course. We need more embedded PD that gives teachers an opportunity to embed their learning in their daily activity. Embedded PD is the key to transformational learning. While there is a time and place for getting away, we have traditionally only used that "away" method when we also need to use the "learn right here" method of delivery as well. Take a look at what Karen is doing here as you evaluate your PD delivery methods.

I agree with Jeff Utecht that Kim Cofino is on to something with the collaboration cycle of "building indpendence through partnership" in terms of mentoring and helping teachers with their pd and technology integration.

Is a lack of PD a barrier? Professional development is a barrier, although I think they can teach themselves much of what teachers need to be learning to be able to modernise their classrooms. The worst thing a teacher can say is: "who's going to teach me how to do that?" Teachers are teachers and should be able to teach themselves what they need to know. If they can't then they probably shouldn't be teaching. You want a teacher who can keep up. There are networks of other educators out there that can connect you with new skills. Professional development doesn't have to be something that is done to teachers - it can be just ongoing conversations they're having with other professionals that they're learning from every day.

What if? A new way to think about PD and conferences. : EFL 2.0 - Teacher Talk - 14 views

What if we had presentations without a set topic? Where people show up without an organized agenda. Where the discussion goes this way and that way - as the experience and knowledge of those in the room dictate and NOT as the set delivery of the typical presentation would dictate.

Hi there! OK, so I just read this, as you well know I share similar viewpoints as you, but here's my question (and I may be missing something obvious here, but, when I read this, it describes more of the EdCamp model, no? Or is even that too formal to rid the room of the pink elephant? Just wondering.

Hacking Your Classroom: Getting Around Blocks & Bans - 0 views

  •
Dawn Casey-Rowe hits a tough topic that is the number one complaint that teachers have. I had her on my show not too long a go and she speaks from a tough situation with lots of blocks and bans but gets it done anyway. If your complaint is blocks and bans, then take time to read this post to focus on what you CAN do. Dawn is offering a set of PD blog posts that you'll want to dig into. "This week, we're going to discuss the white elephant in the room. Tech frustration. Many teachers struggle to bring students the type of tech experience they would like because of systemic blocks and bans, or worse, feel embarrassed as students have more access to tech than teachers do. This is the issue that brought me to the tech world myself. Students continually asked the hard questions about why they couldn't utilize technology such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets, and why phones were confiscated when students were using them for educational purposes. I wanted to improve my classroom experience and give my students more, but budget was a concern. Tech access is a problem in many schools. There are legitimate reasons-the desire of administrators to protect students from the darker side of the internet, fear of the unknown, lack of wireless capacity and budget difficulties which cause insufficient numbers of computers or the inability to upgrade existing tech. Some educational leaders have overcome these hurdles, but others are still working to get to that space."
