7 YouTube Alternatives & Why They Make Sense - 268 views

  • are some things that YouTube can’t do, or doesn’t do so well
    • webExplorations

I started my online videos using blip.tv but videos kept breaking and they kept turning closed captioning on and off. I have a deaf student and this became a real show stopper. When I switched to YouTube I was pleasantly surprised on how friendly the user control panels were and how easy (and fast) it is to maintain my video library. (Here's my channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/peterMankato?feature=mhee). The features on YouTube far surpass blip.tv for me.

Lines on Plagiarism Blur for Students in the Digital Age - NYTimes.com - 12 views

  • But these cases — typical ones, according to writing tutors and officials responsible for discipline at the three schools who described the plagiarism — suggest that many students simply do not grasp that using words they did not write is a serious misdeed.
  • Digital technology makes copying and pasting easy, of course. But that is the least of it. The Internet may also be redefining how students — who came of age with music file-sharing, Wikipedia and Web-linking — understand the concept of authorship and the singularity of any text or image.
  • “When you’re sitting at your computer, it’s the same machine you’ve downloaded music with, possibly illegally, the same machine you streamed videos for free that showed on HBO last night.”

  • Ms. Brookover, who works at the campus library, has pondered the differences between researching in the stacks and online. “Because you’re not walking into a library, you’re not physically holding the article, which takes you closer to ‘this doesn’t belong to me,’ ” she said. Online, “everything can belong to you really easily.”
  • Ms. Blum argued that student writing exhibits some of the same qualities of pastiche that drive other creative endeavors today — TV shows that constantly reference other shows or rap music that samples from earlier songs.

Outlook 2003 - Gmail Help - 0 views

The instructions transitioning from step 1 to step 2 were a little confusing because in order to finish step 1 (enable IMAP) you need to know how your server (Outlook 2003, in my case) should be configured. Otherwise the explanation was easy to follow.

These maps are Tokyo centered. A different perspective from the one we are used to here in the U.S.

Good point, it is easy to put the centre maps of the Earth on Europe, the USA or Asia then forget how this looks for other nations.

VoiceThread - Products - K-12 - 91 views

I LOVE VoiceThread. I think it is super easy to use and provides students the opportunity to express themselves digitally. It works great for elementary students all the way up to high school students (even adults). You can create a single educator account for FREE or get a classroom subscription. Depending on how often you will use it I recommend splurging and buying the class subscription because you can create individual student accounts.

Incompetent Research Skills Curb Users' Problem Solving (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox) - 95 views

  • In general, we almost never see people use advanced search. And when they do, they typically use it incorrectly — partly because they use it so rarely that they never really learn how it works.
  • or many problems, the actual answer is right there. But the concept that you might have to sometimes go beyond search listings is getting lost

  • Sadly, when one approach is so easy (and works much of the time), users never develop the research skills needed to try or even consider other approaches.
  •
"Today, many users are so reliant on search that it's undermining their problem-solving abilities. Ironically, the better search gets, the more dangerous it gets as people increasingly assume that whatever the search engine coughs up must be the answer."

I really don't know how I ever did anything without this program. It is perfect for scheduling student conferences, office hours, volunteer hours, sign-ups for presentations, etc. You set it up and provide the link. Those who want to sign up take over, they are e-mailed a google calendar and they are e-mailed a reminder automatically. EASY One of those "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS FREE!" programs.
