Neel, You must sign up for an educator account and they automatically give you an Educator Plus account for 184 days, along with a promo code that you can share with up to 50 other individuals (typically students), after the 184 days it only costs $5.00/month or $30/yr. They also offer a referral program so that you can earn an upgraded account for FREE but each referral has to become a paying subscriber.
  •
I also am having trouble finding how to sign up for the educator.'s account. I follow the links but they do ot offer the educator option. Any ideas?
  •
could student use free version to make quick videos - you only get 30 seconds for free ... but I think that would work toward being concise and planning ahead

As schools shift to Google Apps, blind students object - 0 views

  •
I'm a big proponent of Google Apps, but the accessibility issues do give me pause. I wonder, though, are all the features that are discussed in the article available via offline/local software packages? Does that mean the majority must be limited to those features that are also available to the blind? Big questions.

Scientists make quantum breakthrough - 25 views

  • Scientists have demonstrated for the first time that atoms can be guided in a laser beam and possess the same properties as light guided in an optical communications fiber.
  • Abstract Speckle patterns produced by multiple independent light sources are a manifestation of the coherence of the light field. Second-order correlations exhibited in phenomena such as photon bunching, termed the Hanbury Brown–Twiss effect, are a measure of quantum coherence. Here we observe for the first time atomic speckle produced by atoms transmitted through an optical waveguide, and link this to second-order correlations of the atomic arrival times. We show that multimode matter-wave guiding, which is directly analogous to multimode light guiding in optical fibres, produces a speckled transverse intensity pattern and atom bunching, whereas single-mode guiding of atoms that are output-coupled from a Bose–Einstein condensate yields a smooth intensity profile and a second-order correlation value of unity. Both first- and second-order coherence are important for applications requiring a fully coherent atomic source, such as squeezed-atom interferometry.

What Is a Book? The Definition Continues to Blur: Tech News and Analysis « - 45 views

  • a whole series of ongoing attempts to reimagine the entire industry of writing and selling books. If you’re an author, it’s a time of incredible chaos, but also incredible opportunity.
  • a market where Amazon is already publishing what it calls “Singles,” or short book-length publications that virtually anyone can produce.
  • author Barry Eisler, after publishing a number of books through the traditional route, said recently he’s going to start self-publishing, because he will have more control over the process and will keep more of the revenue.
  •
"It used to be so easy to define what a book was: a collection of printed pages bound inside a cover (hard or soft) that you could place on a shelf in your library, or in a store. Now, there are e-books, and blogs that turn into books, and long pieces of journalism that are somewhere between magazine articles and short books"
  •
Good article that notes the increase of self-publication with eBooks that can be purchased from Amazon

  • Scratch a situation where technology is making a positive difference and I think you will find that the benefits derive from the same characteristics found in an effective tech-free classroom

Cheating Poll - 44 views

  •
Study suggests 1/3 of teens admit cheating at least once on a test using a cell phone. What does this suggest about our assessments? Are they authentic evaluations of skills we want our students to learn?
  •
Best move is to incorporate the technology into the assessment-design the test around the tool if possible...or totally ban it...make students put up all electronics in the front of the room -allow only "two" pencils and water-no books, purses;etc

Blog, Tweet, Design: Student Journalists Go Far Beyond Writing | MindShift - 48 views

  •
Article discussing shift in journalism courses (college level) and student expectations. Similar k-12?
  •
It's like there are two types of people- those who are online and those who are not? I know that's glib and endless permutations exist but It's such an interesting chasm for in my mind I assume the future generations will all be on the same page with tech but then probably technology will always be moving on leaving a similar gap between users of the older tools compared with users of the newer? It's the disruptive nature of these tools that have lead to the need to focus on the technology rather than the written content. Journos need to curate not write content. The two worlds are overlapping but not really aligning.
