  • Diigo and Netvibes We’re trialling using Netvibes as a central gathering and dissemination point for resources shared and recommended via the ECN.  Netvibes lets you put any number of “blocks” or widgets into it so it’s a one-stop-shop with little windows into feeds and pages and tools from other sites. You can put a block in Netvibes from a Diigo group; you’ll see resources shared publicly within that group, along with tags, descriptions, comments, discussions, and highlighted portions of those resources. For each resource you can either view all the Diigo commentary on the resource, or view the resource directly (you can toggle easily between these in Netvibes). You can link straight from that block by tag, by user, by group, and by resource, and go straight into the relevant place in Diigo. You can have a block in Netvibes showing a public group’s  forum discussions. You can have a block in Netvibes showing your resource list slideshow. You can have blocks in Netvibes based on feeds for specific tags, e.g. a block showing everything tagged “employability”.  This means you can have a fairly fine-grained structure within Netvibes, making it easier for visitors to the Netvibes page to find things on the main topics of interest.

      I find it a very sad state of affairs in the UK that this article constitutes a story. It has been widely acknowledged amongst child developmentalists that there is going to be a gulf between the sexes at such an age due to the internal developments taking place. Although testing is 'voluntary' in the UK, it is clearly still widespread to accountability purposes. We are talking about 7-year-olds here. What is disappointing also, is the fact further on in the article that a politician sees this as capital to attack the government, rather than the whole 'testing' regime for 7 year olds.

On Twitter, the notes become the story, devoid of even five minutes of reflection on the writer's way to the computer. Luckily, reporters still exist to make sense of information bytes and expand upon them for readers—but for how much longer? I worry that microblogging cheats my students out of their trump card: a mindful attention to the subject in front of them, so that they can capture its sights and sounds, its smells and tactile qualities, to share with readers. How can Twittering stories from laptops and phones possibly replace the attentive journalist who tucks a digital recorder artfully under a notepad, pencil behind one ear, and gives full attention to the subject at hand?

But, Willingham (Willingham, 2009) has shown that if the subject is visual then the teachers should teach in a visual style and not an aural style.
