How the Flipped Classroom Is Radically Transforming Learning - THE DAILY RIFF - Be Smarter. About Education. - 117 views

  • students missed our classes and struggled to stay caught up.
  • Flipping the classroom has transformed our teaching practice.  We no longer stand in front of our students and talk at them for thirty to sixty minutes at a time.  This radical change has allowed us to take on a different role with our students.
  • One of the greatest benefits of flipping is that overall interaction increases: Teacher to student and student to student.  Since the role of the teacher has changed from presenter of content to learning coach, we spend our time talking to kids

  • The beauty of these mini-lectures is we are delivering "just in time" instruction when the students are ready for learning.
  • As we roam around the class, we notice the students developing their own collaborative groups.  Students are helping each other learn instead of relying on the teacher as the sole disseminator of knowledge.
  • We think the key is for students to identify learning as their goal, instead of striving for the completion of assignments.  We have purposely tried to make our classes places where students carry out meaningful activities instead of completing busy work.
  • Our goal is for them to be the best learner possible, and to truly understand the content in our classes.  When our students grasp the concept that we are on their side, they respond by doing their best.
  • We both remember sitting in parent conferences for years and parents would often ask us how their son or daughter behaved in class.
  • You see, the question is a non-issue in our classroom.  Since students are coming with the primary focus on learning, the real question is now:  Is your student learning or not?  If they are not learning, what can we do to help them learn?  This is a much more profound question and when we can discuss this with parents, we can really move students into a place which will help them become better learners.

No more pencils, no more books: this Vancouver school has embraced iPads, iPods and apps - 107 views

  •
"For students attending one of Vancouver's most popular public schools, the classroom is an exciting world of iPads, iPods, apps, laptops and SmartBoards. Even the youngest children at Elsie Roy elementary in Yaletown are using iPads as they learn to write the letters of the alphabet, pull them together into words and tackle basic addition and subtraction with colourful and interactive applications that make learning feel like fun."

Should College Gossip Websites be Banned? « OPPapers Blog - 15 views

  • Should College Gossip Websites be Banned?
  • The Chronicle on Higher Education reports on College ACB: Millsaps blocked access to the site a month ago after student leaders suggested a review of the site contents, said Brit Katz, vice president for student life and dean of students, in an e-mail to The Chronicle. Millsaps had also banned JuicyCampus. Dawn Watkins, vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Washington and Lee University, said administrators there pulled the plug late last year after their numerous requests to Mr. Frank to remove most content mentioning the university were denied. Ms. Watkins said a number of reported cases of cyberbullying among first-year female students prompted those requests. When asked whether restricting access to the site was a freedom-of-speech issue, Ms. Watkins and Mr. Katz both said their primary responsibilities were to prevent anonymous postings that name individuals

Are you on LinkedIN? | Integrating Technology in the Primary Classroom - 57 views

  • Teachers are warned that schools are scouring social networking sites and googling potential candidates for school positions.
  •
Recently I read on the oz-teachers mailing list a warning for teachers about using social networking sites unprofessionally. This UK article, suggests that teachers should be cautious of what they post online and check what information is available about them. Teachers are warned that schools are scouring social networking sites and googling potential candidates for school positions. This warning is not of concern to me. I am very wary about thinking before posting. I use Facebook in a limited way, while using Twitter for entirely professional reasons.

And of course the rules and methods of citation have to be adjusted. How can Web 2.0-sources be quoted in scientific publications? Finding an answer to this question is crucial for motivating people to contribute.

Interesting point. What does that mean for students' ability to come up with a coherent string of scientific text? Or: will these changing recepion habits make coherent text superfluous?
