Weblogg-ed » Don't, Don't, Don't vs. Do, Do, Do - 57 views

  • “Do use our network to connect to other students and adults who share your passions with whom you can learn.” “Do use our network to help your teachers find experts and other teachers from around the world.” “Do use our network to publish your best work in text and multimedia for a global audience.” “Do use our network to explore your own creativity and passions, to ask questions and seek answers from other teachers online.” “Do use our network to download resources that you can use to remix and republish your own learning online.” “Do use our network to collaborate with others to change the world in meaningful, positive ways.”

We have bandwidth issues and the issue of students just plain being distracted in school. I see that as a challenge to teachers to teach better rather than letting the teachers sit back and teach the same old way. Figure out a better way to engage students.
  • Do some students watch the Kanye West dissing Taylor Swift video on YouTube when they should be doing their work? Of course they do. But this experience has shown me that THIS IS THE WAY students should be learning…

Plagiarism vs. Collaboration on Education's Digital Frontier - 89 views

You make some very good points but I think you could go further. The reason we put so much emphasis on "originality" is because we were preparing students for a world in which they would have to prepare written and oral presentations individually. In the modern workplace, very little is done that way anymore. Authorship is not what it used to be. Now, everything seems to be collaborative, generated at "stand-up" meetings of the whole "team". I'm not sure the end result is better, but it's clear that the very concept of plagiarism needs reconsideration. What if we created exercises around the task of correcting other people's work? Wouldn't that be more useful and "creative"?

      teaching controversy? Really?
  • 14 percent of high school biology teachers personally reject not only the theory of evolution but also scientific method, which teaches rigorous critical thinking skills and draws a clear path to the discovery of real truths and how to separate them from merely apparent truths.

  • The basic science of evolutionary biology underlies so many diverse disciplines that it can be considered a basic necessity of knowledge in modern scientific society.

This statement is misleading in that it assumes the ID stand rejects small variations within an already preexisting genetic code.  Creationist and ID teachings both conclude that variations within the genetic code are essential to species survival.  The pseudo-proven evolution of species-to-species genetics does not need to be taught at any level in order for individuals to prosper at higher institutes of learning.
  • It seems today's Religious Right would raise a generation of kids who would perhaps conclude the lights are out because they used a curse word or took God's name in vain.

  •
Finland recently made the news for its decision to shift away from a focus on handwriting. Beginning in 2016 students will not be required tl learn cursive handwriting and instead will be taught typing skills. If this was anywhere other tan Finland the decision might be ignored or ridiculed but the Finnish Education systems reputation for producing quality learning backed by innovative practice makes this hard to ignore.

Education: Competition vs Collaboration - 35 views

  •
In a time where much of the debate around education is linked to performance on national and international assessments such as PISA, TIMMS, PIRLS and in Australia, NAPLAN combined with calls for market-driven reforms there is a danger that a climate of competition between schools and systems will grow.

Conformity vs Individuality in Education - 4 views

  •
"At its inception in the Victorian era, mass education in the UK focused very much on conformity, based on the prevailing 'factory production' mindset on the age. But how much has changed? With top down curricula and a rigid exam system testing the merest fraction of what is actually important, has education really left the production line behind?"
