  • There seems to be a common sentiment that online courses open up the door for students to become more mischievous and dishonest than they ever would dare in a more traditional classroom setting, but why is that the case?
  • Can he or she know for sure—even when students are in direct eyesight as they work through an exam—that nothing improper is happening? And what about the instructor who gives take-home exams? How are these any different from the kinds of exams that students in an online course might take?
  • Perhaps the key for all of us—regardless of where and how we teach our course—is to really rethink just what assessment means, because no matter where the class takes place, someone who wants to behave in a dishonest way will probably figure out how to do so.

    These puzzles are not for me. Perhaps I'm too right-brained.

    It's probably my Engineering background but some of these assume (incorrectly) alot. For example. "A man is lying dead in a room. There is a large pile of gold and jewels on the floor, a chandelier attached to the ceiling, and a large open window." "Lying" leads one to believe the man is being held down by weight. If we assume he properly set his ballasts for zero/neutral buoyancy he would be floating especially given his now empty tank. Also most wreckage divers use some form of balloon or cabling system attached to a boat to help "carry" heavy loads to the surface. So he wouldn't have been held down by the find. Finally, only the most experienced divers, with the proper training dive for salvage. An experience diver would never be caught out with no air. Not to mention the problems states there is an easy access path with the "large window" so even if things went completely wrong, the diver could have at least tried for the surface. I'm with Sigrid, not for me. ;-)

      I agree with everything, but the "free" part. Haven't we all heard the saying, "you get what you pay for?" The best textbook I know about is Campbell's Biology. It was written by tons of experts in the field. Did they all volunteer to write it? Shouldn't experts be compensated for their time in the creation of quality textbook content? I know we would all like everything to be free, but writing (or producing audio or video) GOOD content takes skill and expertise. Are all these people supposed to do this for free? I just don't understand the idea behind this.

      I agree with this, providing the teacher uses a school account, not their own personal account, as this would open up lots of other issues.

      I don't know how much I agree with this. I reckon that I would rather deploy statusnet on a server, as it is free, takes only a little amount of technical ability (or you could perhaps recruit the help of a computing teacher if you have access to one) and it then gives you, or some other trusted individual/group control and ownership of the data.

    I have been in on conversations about the validity and affordability of setting up every student with an iPad or other tablets. I always have advocated for devices like these in the classroom, the ones our students will be using in their near futures (or for many, right now!). What I noticed the more I played with it was that it really could serve teachers in a large number of ways.

      Goodreader or iannotate - I currently have iAnnotate.
  • IMHO iAnnotate is far superior. There are a couple of areas GoodReader excels (like in the automatic page fit, having two up, etc), but by and large iAnnotate does everything else more effectively. These are just a few reasons why it suits my workflow better than GoodReader: - Tabs. It speaks for itself, but having several documents open with the ability to flick between them is useful. - Sharing features. The ability to email or paste to clipboard a summary of all notes/highlights/annotations you've made is just brilliant, and makes light work of noting the most poignant areas in an academic article. - Annotation tools. They are far quicker to access than in GoodReader. If you want to highlight something in iAnnotate, you just tap the icon in the toolbar and drag it over the text (as much as you want – you can scroll through the document even with the highlight tool selected) before confirming your selection. You can set as many different colour highlighters up as you want. By contrast, in GoodReader you must tap-and-hold, drag the handles to select a continuous chunk of text, then tap highlight from the popup. If you want to change the colour of the highlight you need to tap, choose colour, confirm your choice; using multiple colours is just too time consuming. I prefer the behaviour of notes in iAnnotate too, for reviewing and revision purposes. Tapping every note in GoodReader is tiresome.
