Tech Savvy Kids - 86 views

  • To the psychologists, sociologists, and generational and media experts who study them, their digital gear sets this new group (yet unnamed by any powers that be) apart, even from their tech-savvy Millennial elders. They want to be constantly connected and available in a way even their older siblings don't quite get. These differences may appear slight, but they signal an all-encompassing sensibility that some say marks the dawning of a new generation.

Brittanica lodged a complaint, and here, you can see what it complained about as well as Nature’s response. Nature compared articles from both organizations on various topics and sent them to experts to review. Excellent perspective on "The 'W' Word" - use it wisely for what it is - high school and college kids shouldn't be citing any general knowledge encyclopedias for serious research - but that doesn't mean there aren't some excellent uses for it.

Quandl - Find, Use and Share Numerical Data - 52 views

  •
Hi Professor Neustadtl, I have developed a repository for sociology data tailored for researchers, and especially students.  The site is open and free, and has over 3 million social, financial, and economic time series datasets available for downloading.  Importantly, the ease by which a user can find, trim, transform, merge, and download time series data from www.quandl.com is in my opinion, unmatched elsewhere. My hope is that you will visit the site briefly, and perhaps offer me some feedback.  More information about the service is below. I've also included my LinkedIN profile should you be weary of my intentions with this email. www.quandl.com/academics with thanks, Tammer -- Tammer Kamel tammerk@quandl.com http://www.quandl.com http://www.linkedin.com/in/tammerkamel/

Social networking sites and our lives | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life ... - 53 views

  •
Questions have been raised about the social impact of widespread use of social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter. Do these technologies isolate people and truncate their relationships? Or are there benefits associated with being connected to others in this way? The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project decided to examine social networking sites in a survey that explored people's overall social networks and how use of these technologies is related to trust, tolerance, social support, and community and political engagement. The findings presented here paint a rich and complex picture of the role that digital technology plays in people's social worlds. Wherever possible, we seek to disentangle whether people's varying social behaviors and attitudes are related to the different ways they use social networking sites, or to other relevant demographic characteristics, such as age, gender and social class.

Technology Will Not Replace Teachers | LinkedIn - 40 views

  • it is no substitute for experienced human decision-making and intervention in complex, dynamic, high-stakes situations
    • Rafael Morales_Gamboa

But, how many of this situations occur every day, week, month, year in a teacher's practice?
  • Few would argue that without Captain Sully Sullenberger, a former fighter pilot with nearly 30 years of commercial aviation experience, there would have been no miracle on the Hudson
    • Rafael Morales_Gamboa

But, how many of such miracles are required every day? In the UK, for example, giving birth is attended by a nurse in the patient's room, but specialized surgeons and rooms are there in case they are needed. Why wouldn't that apply to teachers?
  • But the highly complex and nuanced demands of teaching cannot be met by computers executing repetitive tasks or simple transactions -- or even sophisticated algorithms. People learn in different ways, at different rates, and numerous variables can affect their progression on any given day -- including those in the social and emotional realm.

  • Teachers are warned that schools are scouring social networking sites and googling potential candidates for school positions.
  •
Recently I read on the oz-teachers mailing list a warning for teachers about using social networking sites unprofessionally. This UK article, suggests that teachers should be cautious of what they post online and check what information is available about them. Teachers are warned that schools are scouring social networking sites and googling potential candidates for school positions. This warning is not of concern to me. I am very wary about thinking before posting. I use Facebook in a limited way, while using Twitter for entirely professional reasons.
