Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script - give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.

"I am of an age where if, as a child, you said you were bored the answer was likely to be, "Only boring people are bored," and be left to find something to do. There was always something to do, go outside and throw a tennis ball against a wall, go out on your bike, do some colouring, play with the Lego, do a jigsaw OR if you really got bored do your homework or tidy your bedroom! Nowadays it seems that the majority of children do not often seem to say that they are bored. They don't often have to find their own entertainment, use their imagination or even have several hours at a time that are not pre-filled with activities. Parents (normally) want to do their best for their children. Charlie wants to do football - that's 5:30 on Wednesday, Sammie wants to do ballet - that's 4:00 on Thursday, extra maths, Judo, trampolining, swimming, cubs… the list goes on, frequently only limited by the time to fit the activities for 2/3/4 children into a week."

Great post by Shelly Wright. It's not about the videos.

When I recently re-read the post, I didn't disagree with anything I'd said. Yet my brief love affair with the flip has ended. It simply didn't produce the tranformative learning experience I knew I wanted for my students .

Direct instruction is direct instruction no matter how you spin or flip it. While it does have its place, as all things do, we're reminded that the paradigm shift is not simply a matter of shifting an order of events. This is a solid post on the power of personalized learning.

I'm using this video demonstrating how to solve a multiplication problem using partial products as a model for when I create my own. A series of free and paid study guides for SAT, ACT, PSAT, AP tests as well as free teacher resources for a variety of topics. 

This is a superb cross curricular site with some paid for services, but the vast majority are free. View book guides on both modern and classic texts, including Shakespeare. The site also has biographies and history info. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/Cross+Curricular
