Wellbeing: Fostering Self-Awareness and Empathy With Grounding Texts | Edutopia - 1 views

  •
At the secondary level, wellbeing is taught to groups of 12 students in four 50-minute coaching sessions each week. They meet three times as a group, and on Fridays, that time is used for one-on-one coaching sessions. They explore topics like bullying, identity, and race through grounding texts such as Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah, and even picture books, like Sailing Boats in the Sky by Quentin Blake.

The Power of a Single Story - Learn + Teach + Share - 1 views

  •
There's a TED Talk I've been showing my students for the last couple of years called "The Danger of a Single Story" by Chimamanda Adichie. In this amazing TED Talk, Adichie warns us how stereotypes are formed, prejudices take root, and discriminatory behaviors occur when "one story" is told about a group of people with whom we have limited contact or understanding. Although it is convenient to accept a single narrative as a "universal truth" to be applied to all members of a group, it is very dangerous. So dangerous and powerful, in fact, that entire genocides have been committed using this very tactic.

Project or Activity? Project-Based Learning and Cousins | Getting Smart - 1 views

  •
A project is a multistep activity undertaken by an individual or group to achieve a particular aim. With that broad definition there's a lot of project-based learning happening in schools these days. Some is better than others and there are a lot of variations: some thin, some deep; some teacher-led, some student-driven; some with clear deliverables, and some very open-ended.

Literature Learning Ladders - 2 views

  •
Literature Circles involve a small group of students exploring a piece of literature in depth. Although you'll find lots of books and articles on the Literature Circles, there are many ways to implement the strategies across grade levels and subject areas. Think of literature circles as one element of a balanced literacy program rather than "the solution." In most cases, the application of literature circles evolves over time as students and teachers become more experienced readers.

Playing with the Postmodern: Picture Books for Multiliteracies - YouTube - 2 views

  •
Students need literacy skills to match their knowledge environments. UNESCO (2003) framed its Literacy Decade positioning literacy as a freedom beyond reading and writing, to include capacities for communication and equal participation in the world. This recognizes multiliteracies (New London Group, 1996) and a knowledge paradigm of multi-modal, constantly shifting, non-linear communication, especially in digital form, that has shifted how we understand literacy.

Decide whether sharing of thinking will happen in small groups or as a whole class. Document the main threads that permeate the discussion of the whole class, particularly noting the differences in viewpoints."

LIBRARY STUFF: How To Create A Book List - 0 views

  •
"It's actually quite difficult to put together a list that appeals to everyone, especially if the number of titles is restricted. The wider the age range the list is targeted at the more challenging it is especially if you have to consider emerging readers alongside confident readers - too many suggestions aimed at each group will put many off. I've had experience of doing this for book awards and school library packs, and it takes a lot longer and is harder than you'd think. "

Culture of Reading - 0 views

  •
"How can you create this shared vision of a "culture of reading" with your colleagues? You can almost think of this as "design thinking" where your group is going to work through the processes of understanding the problem, ideating, developing a prototype, and evaluating & refining."

The resources on the Global Oneness Project are intended for whole-class instruction, with opportunities for group and individual activities and assignments. The lessons are best used as supplements or extensions to the core curriculum. For example, in a unit on climate change, "The Vanishing Island" provides students with a case study to further their understanding of the human impact of climate change.
