The International Literacy Association (ILA) is a global advocacy and membership organization of more than 300,000 literacy educators, researchers, and experts across 86 countries. With more than 60 years of experience, ILA has set the standard for how literacy is defined, taught, and evaluated. In March 2003, the Australian School Library Association commissioned the Australian Council for Education Research to conduct a review of the research literature on school libraries and student achievement. Commonly known as the Lonsdale Report (2003), it identifies the need for research that links school libraries to student achievement in Australia.

But, did you know that reading for enjoyment is also associated with higher academic achievement?
A recent large scale study concluded reading for pleasure has 'a powerful influence on children's learning', particularly in developing vocabulary, but also on spelling and maths skills.
These guidelines have been developed to assist school library professionals and educational decision-makers in their efforts to ensure that all students and teachers have access to effective school library programs and services, delivered by qualified school library personnel.
The Australian Kids & Family Reading Reportâ„¢ is a national survey of children aged 6-17 and their parents, as well as parents of children aged 0-5, exploring their reading attitudes and behaviours around reading books for fun. This is the first edition in Australia with past surveys conducted in the US bi-annually since 2006.
695 pairs of children and adults from the same household completed the survey, along with 358 parents of children aged 0-5.
The survey was fielded between November 19, 2015 and November 27, 2015.
