How power really works in schools  - kappanonline.org - 0 views

  •
Power in schools is often assumed to flow only downhill, from more powerful positions (such as superintendent or principal) to less powerful positions (such as teacher or student). This article explores different elements of power and influence drawn from observations in a longitudinal study in a school. It support leadership theory on the power of leading from the middle, although that is not expressly addressed.

The Power of Read Alouds // How to Perform an Effective Interactive Read Aloud | Instit... - 1 views

  •
"Read alouds also give children experience with decontextualized language-requiring students to make sense of ideas beyond the classroom and the here and now (see Beck & McKeown, 2001). A key aspect of this sense-making is the role of dialogue. Students need to engage in discussion with their teacher and classmates to make sense of the text. This emphasis on talk highlights the importance of careful planning of think alouds and questions. To be truly powerful and magical, the practice of reading aloud is actually quite complex. The following steps are crucial to enacting a powerful classroom read aloud."

The Power of a Single Story - Learn + Teach + Share - 1 views

  •
There's a TED Talk I've been showing my students for the last couple of years called "The Danger of a Single Story" by Chimamanda Adichie. In this amazing TED Talk, Adichie warns us how stereotypes are formed, prejudices take root, and discriminatory behaviors occur when "one story" is told about a group of people with whom we have limited contact or understanding. Although it is convenient to accept a single narrative as a "universal truth" to be applied to all members of a group, it is very dangerous. So dangerous and powerful, in fact, that entire genocides have been committed using this very tactic.

Teacher read-alouds demonstrate the power of stories. By showing students the ways that involvement with text engages us, we give them energy for learning how reading works. By showing them how to search for meaning, we introduce strategies of understanding we can reinforce in shared, guided, and independent reading.

8 interactive Google Slides activities for classroom excitement | Ditch That Textbook - 0 views

  •
So often, people think of presentation slides as just that: a visual aid for delivering a presentation in front of an audience. But these slide apps (like Google Slides and PowerPoint in Office 365) really are powerful tools for delivering interactive user experiences. They can also create visually stimulating products to deliver a message and valuable content. By thinking outside the box with Google Slides, PowerPoint and other similar tools, teachers can create unique learning experiences for students. Or students can create them to share with other students.

Using Essential Questions to Engage Student Inquiry - Learning Personalized - 1 views

  •
The key to teaching for understanding is to foster ongoing inquiry into important "big ideas." A natural way to actively engage students in such inquiry is to use a few Essential Questions (EQs) to frame a curriculum unit. The explicit use of EQs sends a powerful signal that learning something deeply is about making meaning, not simply the acquisition of factual knowledge and discrete skills.

The Wombat to Kaptn Koori - Aboriginal representation in comic books and capes | NITV - 0 views

  •
After listing as many Australian Indigenous representations in the superhero worlds, I noticed that many of the early characters' powers are connected to the conceptual 'Dreamtime'. Although this is presented in different ways, it's often done using separate dimensions within the extended comic multiverses. Very little have any mention of actual Aboriginal nations, and do not seem to have had much research or thought towards any level of authenticity. However, the more recent characters appear to have had much more understanding put into these characters; their origins, and their characteristics. But sadly, very few entries here are designed by Aboriginal artists or written by Aboriginal authors themselves, but given the positive development from the 1980s to today, hopefully this is something we will see more of in future.

2 Simple Things That Will Make Essential Questions Better Every Time - 2 views

  •
An essential question is an incredibly powerful tool for discovery learning and critical thinking skill development. Essential and herding questions are also one of the 10 shifts of practice of future-focused learning. If you consider what learning actually is, it is usually the answer to a need or what springs from curiosity around a personal connection. This usually involves the asking of essential questions to drive the learning. However, when they're working with EQs, teachers often ask, "How can I make essential questions better?" 1. Move the question higher on Bloom's Taxonomy 2. Remove specificity

Facing History and Ourselves Review for Teachers | Common Sense Education - 0 views

  •
A wealth of resources explore racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism. The site has an extensive collection of powerful curricula that teachers can use as-is or adapt to their students' needs. Lessons tend to be one to two hours long and units can last a few weeks, so teachers should take time to plan and think about the best ways to integrate these materials into their classroom. Most lessons are designed for whole-class instruction, but supplementary materials can be used for independent research and review.
