Reshaping Learning from the Ground Up | Edutopia - 15 views

  • what it all boils down to is, get the current system out of your head.
  • You're advocating for fundamental radical changes. Are you an optimist when it comes to public education? I just feel it's inevitable that there will have to be change. The only question is whether we're going to do it starting now, or whether we're going to wait for catastrophe.

  • Speaker by speaker, it was true that the farther removed you were from the daily grind of public K12 classroom teaching, the less restrained you felt to critique and condemn it.

Language Learning by iPod: An Emerging Model | Research & Articles - 35 views

  • What we see in these podcasts are some best practices - using social web tools to enhance online language learning and innovative approaches to utilizing podcasting for educational goals.  While language learning has been around as long as human beings have spoken more than one tongue, the model here is uniquely designed for the Web 2.0 world. Static lesson content is transformed into 'lesson events' by focusing student attention around specific content and encouraging student involvement to further enhance the originally designed lesson.  Podcasts, with their conversational nature, rapid publication cycle and modular architecture can further transform learning into an engaging, fresh and personalized experience. This actually takes steps into Learner 2.0 where the learner changes their experiences and behaviors through a collaborative process as they interact with the content, other users, and the instructors.

Intimacy 2.0: Privacy Rights and Privacy Responsibilities on the World Wide Web - Web S... - 19 views

  • Intimacy 2.0: Privacy Rights and Privacy Responsibilities on the World Wide Web
  • This paper examines the idea of privacy in the world of ‘intimacy 2.0’, the use of Web 2.0 social networking technologies and multimedia for the routine posting of intimate details of users’ lives. It will argue that, although privacy is often conceived as a right with benefits that accrue to the individual, it is better seen as a public good, whose benefits accrue to the community in general. In that case, the costs of allowing invasions of one’s privacy do not solely fall on the individual who is unwise enough to do so, but also on wider society.

6 girls arrested in Facebook teacher attack invite - Yahoo! News - 41 views

  • Sadler said the teachers targeted by the threatening comments were shocked by the arrests because the six girls were good students. Some held leadership positions while others had top grades.
  • "I don't understand their motivation. I don't think they think about the consequences because they're young. They're pretty immature then."
  • Children's stresses are so great that they can act out on their frustrations. Parents need to monitor what their kids are doing on communication devices."
    • Steve Ransom

Everyone gets frustrated. This is NOT a reasonable conclusion for being frustrated or stressed. What is evolving in the fabric of our youth that to even consider such actions, let alone make them public, is even possible? There don't appear to be disturbed young girls. The fact that they are likely "normal" in every respect makes this story even more disturbing.

  • The point of this is to make it easier to find all tweets containing writing advice : you just search for “#writetip”. Similarly, you could find a stream of publication tips by keeping an eye on tweets with “#pubtip” in them.
  •
"Using relevant hashtags in your own tweets also increases the likelihood of others seeing your post and becoming a follower. They're a great way to engage with a particular community of Twitter users. The following is a list of some of the hashtags that will be of interest to writers. The list can never be exhaustive because anyone can invent a new tag at any time. Most are self-explanatory, although some need explanation"

Why Are Finland's Schools Successful? | People & Places | Smithsonian Magazine - 26 views

  • “Children from wealthy families with lots of education can be taught by stupid teachers,” Louhivuori said, smiling. “We try to catch the weak students. It’s deep in our thinking.”
  • “We prepare children to learn how to learn, not how to take a test,”
  • “Play is important at this age,” Rintola would later say. “We value play.”
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Compulsory schooling does not begin until age 7. “We have no hurry,” said Louhivuori. “Children learn better when they are ready. Why stress them out?”
  • “It was simply the idea that every child would have a very good public school. If we want to be competitive, we need to educate everybody. It all came out of a need to survive.”
