Successful Strategies for English Language Learners - 19 views

  • Between 1979 and 2008, the number of school-age children (ages 5-17) in the United States who spoke a language other than English at home increased from 3.8 to 10.9 million, or from 9 to 21 percent of the population in this age range, according to the latest figures from the National Center on Education Statistics (NCES).
  • Perhaps one of the greatest examples of inequity lies in a joint investigation of the Department of Justice and the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights that revealed last October that Boston Public Schools had failed to properly identify and adequately serve thousands of ELLs since 2003 as required by the Equal Educational Opportunities Act of 1974 and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Angela Pascopella reported on U.S. school district and national measures "to address surging ELL enrollment-and dropout rate[s]" (deck).

Educational Leadership:Reading Comprehension:Making Sense of Online Text - 33 views

  •
I worked with Julie Curio a few years ago for MA New Literacies. I think it is so important to start teaching students these new skill to comprehend text and to efficiently search a topic. However, I teach graduate level courses and I do these exercises with teachers and many (regardless of age) do not know these strategies. States need to do more PD to bring administrators and teachers up to par so we can make sure our students are ready for whatever comes their way. Thanks, ~Katy

The expansion of secondary education is now the world's most pressing educational challenge. • one-size-fits-all approaches to Internet safety are "analogous to inoculating the entire population for a rare disease that most people are very unlikely to get, while at the same time failing to inoculate the population that's most at risk"
  • Instead of teaching students to be afraid of what others can learn about them online, let's teach them how digital footprints can quickly connect them to the individuals, ideas, and opportunities that they care most about.

Great piece by Bill Ferriter (@plugusin) on the tension between helping kids create a positive, empowering digital footprint and the use of scare tactics to dissuade them from being active online - Two diametrically opposed paradigms.

Google Plus: Is This the Social Tool Schools Have Been Waiting For? - 31 views

  • it may well be the granular level of privacy afforded by Google+ that is the key to making this a successful tool for schools
  • many schools and teachers have still been reluctant to "friend" students

  • some publications have seen an increase in readership after launching HTML5 Web apps than native applications could deliver

Reading news is a huge part of what people use their tablets for, and as Pew's report points out, those users are more engaged and often consume more news content than they did before.
