NICHD National Institute of Health Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development - Center for Research for Mothers & Children CRMC - CRMC serves as a principal source of NIH support for research and research training in maternal and child health. Supported scientists are advancing fundamental and clinical knowledge concerning maternal health and child development problems, such as gestational diabetes, antecedents of adult diseases, obesity and overweight, specific learning disabilities, mechanisms of cognition and learning, growth retardation, HIV/AIDS, and other congenital infections and diseases. The Center also houses the primary federal research entity for research to understand the effects and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals on maternal and child health, as well as a large portfolio on the unique aspects of HIV/AIDS in women and mothers.

The Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, is the nation's largest hospital devoted entirely to clinical research. It is a national resource that makes it possible to rapidly translate scientific observations and laboratory discoveries into new approaches for diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease. The IDD Branch sponsors research and research training aimed at preventing and ameliorating intellectual and related developmental disabilities. The program supports biomedical, biobehavioral, behavioral, and translational research in etiology, pathophysiology, screening, prevention, treatment, and epidemiology.

In large, multicenter clinical studies, a therapy has been shown to significantly lower the risk of lung and brain damage in some very low birthweight premature infants. Results from two randomized clinical trials demonstrate that when given within the first few weeks of life, inhaled nitric oxide helps prevent chronic lung disease in some low birthweight premature infants. In addition, when used within 48 hours after birth, treatment appears to protect some premature newborns from brain injury.

Clinical trial being sponsored by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development NICHD to evaluate whether induced whole-body hypothermia initiated between 6-24 hours of age and continued for 96 hours in infants ≥ 36 weeks gestational age with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy will reduce the incidence of death or disability at 18-24 months of age.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Study to evaluate the safety of high-dose Erythropoietin (Epo) in infants who did not get enough oxygen during birth. Erythropoietin is a hormone normally found in the body that may protect brain cells from damage due to lack of oxygen.
