The Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, is the nation's largest hospital devoted entirely to clinical research. It is a national resource that makes it possible to rapidly translate scientific observations and laboratory discoveries into new approaches for diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease. Approximately 1,500 studies are in progress at the NIH Clinical Center.

NICHD National Institute of Health Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development - Center for Research for Mothers & Children CRMC - CRMC serves as a principal source of NIH support for research and research training in maternal and child health. Supported scientists are advancing fundamental and clinical knowledge concerning maternal health and child development problems, such as gestational diabetes, antecedents of adult diseases, obesity and overweight, specific learning disabilities, mechanisms of cognition and learning, growth retardation, HIV/AIDS, and other congenital infections and diseases. The Center also houses the primary federal research entity for research to understand the effects and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals on maternal and child health, as well as a large portfolio on the unique aspects of HIV/AIDS in women and mothers.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research.

In large, multicenter clinical studies, a therapy has been shown to significantly lower the risk of lung and brain damage in some very low birthweight premature infants. Results from two randomized clinical trials demonstrate that when given within the first few weeks of life, inhaled nitric oxide helps prevent chronic lung disease in some low birthweight premature infants. In addition, when used within 48 hours after birth, treatment appears to protect some premature newborns from brain injury.

The Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is one of the largest neuroscience research centers in the world. Investigators in the NINDS intramural program conduct research in the basic, translational, and clinical neurosciences. National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease NIAMS - The mission of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases is to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research; and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.

NICHD program focuses on developing research that links PCCR medicine and science to the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of childhood disabilities. The effort sponsors competitive research on all aspects of PCCR-including critical analyses of outcomes for children who are survivors of trauma, congenital anomalies, neonatal asphyxia, infectious processes, septic shock, and many other less common, but still devastating hildhood processes. The PCCR program also provides support for the Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) , a national faculty training and career development program that develops successful pediatric critical care physician scientists conducting research to enhance the scientific understanding, clinical management, and rehabilitation of pediatric critical illness.

The first comprehensive comparative effectiveness clinical trial of three widely used anti-seizure drugs for childhood absence epilepsy - the most common form of epilepsy in kids - has established an evidence-based approach for initial drug therapy. Published March 4 in the New England Journal of Medicine*, data from the double-blind, randomized, comparative clinical trial fill a large information gap in the treatment of childhood absence epilepsy, also known as "petit mal" epilepsy. The research, which identifies important differences between drugs in seizure control and side effects, is expected to impact how physicians select and monitor initial therapy for children with the disorder and ultimately lead to improved outcomes.
