Relationships Matter: Assessing the Impacts of a Marine Protected Area on Human Wellbei... - 0 views

    The push to meet global marine conservation targets has significantly increased the scope and scale of marine protected areas (MPAs) worldwide. While the benefits derived from MPA establishment are often optimistically framed as a "win-win" for both marine biodiversity and for the wellbeing of coastal peoples, this assumption is challenged for several reasons, including the fact that current science and practice frequently fails to account for the full impact of MPAs on human wellbeing. This context poses a danger that the context specific, place based aspects of wellbeing, like relations to others and the marine environment, will not be accounted for, examined, or reported in evaluation and decision-making processes. To address this challenge, this research investigates how MPA implementation can change and challenge the relational wellbeing and relational values of small-scale fishers (SSFs) living in Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park, Tanzania. Fieldwork occurred over 2019-2020 and used qualitative data collection methods, including: 140 semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and observation. Results highlight a dynamic interaction between the MPA and SSFs relational wellbeing, including how relational values inform everyday fishing practices, cultural and place identities, as well as interactions with others and connections to the marine environment. Top-down approaches used in MPA development worked against key relational values, including social cohesion, reciprocity, place, agency and self-determination to dismantle and disrupt the practices SSFs viewed as fundamental to their livelihood and collective wellbeing. Our findings serve as a starting point to better recognize the context specific factors that underlie relational wellbeing and give insight into how relational values shape social-ecological complexity within coastal communities. Small-scale fisheries catch and fishing effort in the Socotra Archipelago (Yemen) betwe... - 0 views

    The Socotra Archipelago (Yemen), a group of four islands off the north-eastern tip of Africa in the western Indian Ocean, has a population that relies heavily on small-scale fishing for livelihoods and food security. However, the reporting of fisheries catches by Yemen has consistently been incomplete, with artisanal (small-scale, commercial) catches underreported and small-scale non-commercial subsistence and recreational catches not reported at all. Here, we reconstruct the total small-scale catches and fishing effort from the waters of the Socotra Archipelago for 1950 to 2019, and derive catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) estimates for these fisheries. The catch officially reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization on behalf of Yemen that was assumed taken from the archipelago is thought to be around 20% of the total reconstructed catch for the archipelago. The reconstructed small-scale catch increased from ~1,500 t in 1950 to an all-time peak of 12,000 t in 2000 before declining to 3,300 t by 2014. Thereafter, catches increased again slightly to just over 3,700 t·year-1 by 2019. Artisanal catches accounted for around 70% of total small-scale catches prior to 2010, but made up only around 46% by 2019. Conversely, subsistence catches increased from ~1,000 t in 2010 to ~2,000 t in 2019, and accounted for 54% of total catches by 2019. Small-scale fishing effort increased by over 1000% since 1950 and reached over 11 million kWdays by 2019. The CPUE derived for small-scale fisheries declined by 78% since 1950, from 1.4 kg·kWday-1 to 0.3 kg·kWday-1 in 2019, with most of the decline occurring after 2000. Our findings suggest resource overexploitation, and may assist efforts to more sustainably manage the Socotra Archipelago's fish stocks. Small-scale fisheries support food and nutrient security of the local population, not least during political and humanitarian crises such as in Yemen.

    The western Indian continental shelf houses the world's largest naturally formed coastal low-oxygen zone that develops seasonally during the summer monsoon. We investigated multiple reductive nitrogen transformation pathways and quantified their rates in this system through anaerobic incubations with additions of 15N-labeled substrates during the anoxic period for three consecutive years (2008-2010). Addition of 15N labeled ammonium (15NH4+) resulted in low to moderate anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) rates in about half of our incubations from the oxygen depleted waters. In contrast, incubations with labeled nitrite (15NO2-) led to large production of 30N2 over 29N2 in all incubation experiments, indicating denitrification to be the dominant N-loss pathway. Rates of dissimilatory nitrate/nitrite reduction to ammonium (DNRA) were found to be highly variable and were lower by an order of magnitude than the denitrification rates. Extrapolation of average rates over the sampling periods and volume of anoxic waters showed large nitrogen removal (3.70-11.1 Tg year-1) which is about three times as high as the previously reported estimate (1.3-3.8 Tg year-1). Despite the small area it occupies, this shallow seasonal anoxic zone may account for as much as 20-60% the of the total annual fixed nitrogen loss in the perennial oxygen minimum zone of the Arabian Sea.

    The silver-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, is the primary species used for the culture of pearls in the Indo-Pacific region. The Western Australian fishery relies on wild-caught animals, and as such, knowledge of the status and distribution of P. maxima underpins sustainable management of the fishery. Eighty Mile Beach, in tropical Western Australia, is the key harvest area for P. maxima, with oysters collected by divers to depths of ∼35 m, although there are anecdotal accounts of oysters beyond diving depths. Image-based, and acoustic methods were used to elucidate distribution patterns of P. maxima off Eighty Mile Beach, including data from 862 km2 of multibeam survey and 119 towed video transects spanning an area from the 20 to 100 m contour lines. We quantified habitat characters including depth, substrate, and benthic community composition associated with pearl oyster distribution. Multibeam sonar data was also coupled with towed video data to produce predictive statistical models of P. maxima habitat. We found P. maxima to depths of 76 m, although more than 90% of individuals occurred shallower than 40 m and less than 2% were found deeper than 50 m. Oysters occupied flat, sandy habitats with neighbouring benthic communities of filter feeders (>98% of observations). These results show P. maxima predominantly occurs in depths <40 m, with no evidence that extensive populations extend into deep water in the region.

Microbial Communities of the Hydrothermal Scaly-Foot Snails From Kairei and Longqi Vent... - 0 views

    The microbial communities of the hydrothermal Scaly-foot Snails (SFSs) from independent hydrothermal vent fields have not been investigated in depth. In this study, we collected SFSs from two different hydrothermal environments located on the Central Indian Ridge (CIR) and the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR), the Kairei and Longqi vent fields, respectively. Additionally, one SFS collected from the Kairei vent field was reared for 16 days with in situ deep-sea seawater. The epibiotic and internal samples of SFSs, including ctenidium, esophageal gland, visceral mass, shells, and scales, were examined for microbial community compositions based on the 16S rRNA gene. Our results revealed significant differences in microbial community composition between SFSs samples collected from Kairei and Longqi vent fields. Moreover, the microbial communities of epibiotic and internal SFS samples also exhibited significant differences. Epibiotic SFS samples were dominated by the bacterial lineages of Sulfurovaceae, Desulfobulbaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Campylobacteraceae. While in the internal SFS samples, the genus Candidatus Thiobios, affiliated with the Chromatiaceae, was the most dominant bacterial lineage. Furthermore, the core microbial communities of all samples, which accounted for 78 ∼ 92% of sequences, were dominated by Chromatiaceae (27 ∼ 49%), Sulfurovaceae (10 ∼ 35%), Desulfobulbaceae (2 ∼ 7%), and Flavobacteriaceae (3 ∼ 7%) at the family level. Based on the results of random forest analysis, we also found the genera Desulfobulbus and Sulfurovum were the primary bacterial lineages responsible for the dissimilarity of microbial communities between the SFS samples collected from the Kairei and Longqi vent fields. Our results indicated that the microbial lineages involved in the sulfur cycle were the key microorganisms, playing a crucial role in the hydrothermal vent ecosystems.     Detailed ocean currents in the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean adjacent to southern Sumatran and Javan coasts have not been fully explained because of limited observations. In this study, zonal current characteristics in the region have been studied using simulation results of a 1/8∘ global hybrid coordinate ocean model from 1950 to 2013. The simulated zonal currents across three meridional sections were then investigated using an empirical orthogonal function (EOF), where the first three modes account for 75 %-98 % of the total variance. The first temporal mode of EOF is then investigated using ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) to distinguish the signals. This study has revealed distinctive features of currents in the South Java Current (SJC) region, the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF)-South Equatorial Current (SEC) region, and the transition zone between these regions. The vertical structures of zonal currents in southern Java and offshore Sumatra are characterized by a one-layer flow. Conversely, a two-layer flow is observed in the nearshore and transition regions of Sumatra. Current variation in the SJC region has peak energies that are sequentially dominated by semiannual, intraseasonal, and annual timescales. Meanwhile, the transition zone is characterized by semiannual and intraseasonal periods with pronounced interannual variations. In contrast, interannual variability associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) modulates the prominent intraseasonal variability of current in the ITF-SEC region. ENSO has the strongest influence at the outflow ITF, while the IOD's strongest influence is in southwestern Sumatra, with the ENSO (IOD) leading the current by 4 months (1 month). When Imagery and Physical Sampling Work Together: Toward an Integrative Methodology of ... - 0 views

    Imagery has become a key tool for assessing deep-sea megafaunal biodiversity, historically based on physical sampling using fishing gears. Image datasets provide quantitative and repeatable estimates, small-scale spatial patterns and habitat descriptions. However, taxon identification from images is challenging and often relies on morphotypes without considering a taxonomic framework. Taxon identification is particularly challenging in regions where the fauna is poorly known and/or highly diverse. Furthermore, the efficiency of imagery and physical sampling may vary among habitat types. Here, we compared biodiversity metrics (alpha and gamma diversity, composition) based on physical sampling (dredging and trawling) and towed-camera still images (1) along the upper continental slope of Papua New Guinea (sedimented slope with wood-falls, a canyon and cold seeps), and (2) on the outer slopes of the volcanic islands of Mayotte, dominated by hard bottoms. The comparison was done on selected taxa (Pisces, Crustacea, Echinoidea, and Asteroidea), which are good candidates for identification from images. Taxonomic identification ranks obtained for the images varied among these taxa (e.g., family/order for fishes, genus for echinoderms). At these ranks, imagery provided a higher taxonomic richness for hard-bottom and complex habitats, partially explained by the poor performance of trawling on these rough substrates. For the same reason, the gamma diversity of Pisces and Crustacea was also higher from images, but no difference was observed for echinoderms. On soft bottoms, physical sampling provided higher alpha and gamma diversity for fishes and crustaceans, but these differences tended to decrease for crustaceans identified to the species/morphospecies level from images. Physical sampling and imagery were selective against some taxa (e.g., according to size or behavior), therefore providing different facets of biodiversity.     Plastics account for ~80% of the litter in many marine environments (MORALES-CASELLES et al., 2021) and, a suitable example of a transboundary problem. Several decades of waste mismanagement have made plastics ubiquitous in the global ecosystem and one of the largest growing environmental problems (KERSHAW, 2016). Given the growing evidence of the threats caused by plastics and the projected alarming accumulation in the oceans, environmental managers are urgently pursuing sustainable solutions to reduce plastic. One solution to plastic pollution is identifying the accumulation zones (i.e., hotspots of plastic accumulation). Accumulation zones are also critical for our long-term understanding of the dynamics of plastics in the marine system and identifying vulnerable ecosystems (Lebreton et al., 2017). However, few reports have focused on this aspect of plastic research, particularly from the Indian coast. At the same time, there was a surge in marine plastic publications (80 articles); however, 65% of the study was from beaches. This article addressed this gap by identifying potential plastic accumulation zones along the Indian coast based on published literature. Studies in the field of oil dispersion, plankton connectivity, and marine safety recovery provide an opportunity to understand how oceanographic features may govern the transport of plastic in the ocean (VAN SEBILLE et al., 2020).

Managing a multi-species fishery in distant waters: the case of the Spanish-flagged pur... - 0 views

    According to the latest report on the state of World Food and Agriculture Organization fisheries and aquaculture (SOFIA, 2022), skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) are among the five most caught finfish species of the world, with 2,827 and 1,569 thousand tons in 2020, respectively. The tropical purse seiners deploy large nets around tuna schools in the tropical waters of the world. This method targets three main tuna species, skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye (Thunnus obesus) tunas, which are mainly used for canning or frozen markets. This important fishery provides employment opportunities for many people in developing countries. Landings for the European long-distance fishery targeting tuna and tuna-like fishes from Indian Ocean, amounted to 303,638 tons valued at EUR 423.7 million (Prellezo et al., 2022), where the Spanish fleet of purse seiners targeting tropical tuna is the most important. The Spanish tropical purse seine fleet fishing in the Indian Ocean accounts for 26% of the skipjack and yellowfin tunas caught from Indian Ocean, which represent approximately 3% of worldwide catch for both species.

    Ethnobiological knowledge is an important part of people's capacity to manage, conserve, and improve the governance of mangrove ecosystems. This paper assesses the ethnobiological importance of mangroves to coastal communities adjacent to seven mangrove forests in Southern and North-western Sri Lanka. 197 households were interviewed, and respondents identified various mangrove ecosystem goods and services. Fruit juice produced from Sonneratia spp. and salads made with Acrostichum aureum L. young leaves constitutes valuable edible products in both regions. Rhizophora mucronata Lamk. and Lumnitzera racemosa Willd., were employed as alternative sources of fuel. Other uses of mangroves include wood for construction, chemical, and medicinal products. However, the usage extent was significantly higher in the Southern province (87.6%) compared to the North-western province (51%). Five indices were developed to understand the ethnobiological knowledge of respondents (Mangrove Use Index, Perception Index, Regulation Awareness Index, and Knowledge Index, Mangrove Dynamics Index). Except for the Mangrove Use Index, the rest of the indices were significantly different between the provinces. Communities with higher mangrove knowledge showed lesser usage. Respondents had negative attitudes towards the regulations that limit/did not allow the community to enter mangrove forests. Community participation, ethnobiological importance, and perspectives regarding how the community wants to manage mangrove forests should be taken into account to avoid conflicts in the future. Considering local perceptions and translating them into mangrove management regulations can be effective in guiding sustainable mangrove management in Sri Lanka as well as in other countries in the world.

    Small-scale fisheries (SSF) are highly susceptible to changes in weather patterns. For example, in Nosy Barren, Madagascar, SSF use traditional pirogues with handcrafted sails that rely on seasonal wind and sea conditions. As climate change is expected to increase the intensity and frequency of severe weather, it is important to understand how changes in weather affect SSF fishing efforts. Yet, a gap exists in the understanding of how changes in meteorological conditions affect small scale fishers. This study combines fishers' meteorological knowledge of weather conditions that allow for small-scale fishing with long-term remotely sensed meteorological data to quantify how fishing effort, defined as available fishing hours, of SSF in coastal Madagascar has changed between 1979-2020 in response to long-term weather trends. Results show a significant decrease in available fishing hours over the examined time period. Particularly, we found that a decrease in available fishing hours between 1979-2020 with a loss of 21.7 available fishing hours per year. Increased adverse weather conditions, likely associated with climate change, could decrease fishers access to crucial resources needed for the food and livelihood security. Climate change adaptation strategies will need to account for changing weather impacts on fishing availability.

    Recent studies suggest that pelagic sediments can enrich rare-earth elements (REE) acting as a significant reservoir for the global REE budget as well as a potential resource for future exploitation. Although Ca-phosphate (e.g., bioapatite fossils) and Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides (e.g., micronodule) have been considered important REE carriers in deep-sea sediments, the proportion of REE held by each mineral phase remains enigmatic. Here, we have investigated the sediments from two promising REE-rich prospective areas: the Tiki Basin in the Southeast Pacific (TKB) and the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). The mineral grains including bioapatite fossils and Fe-Mn micronodules have been inspected individually by in-situ microscale analytical methods. Correspondently, the REE bound to Ca-phosphate and Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides have been sequentially extracted and quantified. The crucial role of Ca-phosphate is substantiated by sequential leaching which reveals its dominance in hosting ~69.3-89.4% of total REE. The Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides carry ~8.2% to 22.0% of REE in bulk sediments, but they account for ~70.0-80.5% of Ce owing to their preferential adsorption of Ce over the other REE. Surface sediment on modern seafloor can accumulate high REE contents resulting from the REE scavenging by the host phases within the range of sediment-seawater interface. Differences between TKB and CIOB samples indicate that the REE enrichment in the deep-sea environment may be controlled by multiple factors including the productivity of overlying seawater (e.g., phosphorus flux), water depth relative to carbonate compensation depth (CCD), sedimentation rate, redox condition, and hydrothermal vent input (e.g., Fe-Mn precipitations).

    India accounts for nearly 60% of the croakers caught in the Indian Ocean. The north-west (NW) coast of India is the most productive fishing ground for croakers and contributes almost half of the nation's croaker catch. Lesser sciaenids (small- and medium-sized croakers) are the multi-species complex landed by commercial trawlers along the NW coast of India. Despite several notable changes in the fishing pattern in the region, such as the emergence of multi-day fishing and increasing dominance of pelagic trawling, there is no recent assessment of this major demersal fishery group. The present study evaluates the stock status of 10 species of lesser sciaenids forming the commercial fishery in the region using length frequency data collected during 2020-2021. The assessment was made using the length-based Bayesian biomass (LBB) estimation method. The indicators of relative biomass (B/B0 and B/BMSY) showed that most of the species (seven) are fully exploited, whereas two and one species were found under- and over-exploited, respectively. Excessive juveniles (Lmean/Lopt and Lc/Lc_opt< 0.90) in catches were observed in the case of Paranibea semiluctuosa. A sufficient number of larger individuals (L95th/Linf< 0.90) in the population were lacking in the case of Johnius belangerii and Otoithes ruber. However, the study indicated a gradual improvement in stock status for most of the species over previous estimates, which can be attributed to the diversion of trawl fishing efforts towards the pelagic realm.

Diversity and community structure of microzooplankton in the eastern Indian Ocean durin... - 0 views

    Microzooplankton (MZP) are an important part of the microbial food web and play a pivotal role in connecting the classic food chain with the microbial loop in the marine ecosystem. They may play a more important role than mesozooplankton in the lower latitudes and oligotrophic oceans. In this article, we studied the species composition, dominant species, abundance, and carbon biomass of MZP, including the relationship between biological variables and environmental factors in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean during the spring intermonsoon. We found that the MZP community in this ocean showed a high species diversity, with a total of 340 species. Among these, the heterotrophic dinoflagellates (HDS) (205 species) and ciliates (CTS) (126 species) were found to occupy the most significant advantageous position. In addition, CTS (45.3%) and HDS (39.7%) accounted for a larger proportion of the population abundance, while HDS (47.1%) and copepod nauplii (CNP) (46.4%) made a larger contribution to the carbon biomass. There are significant differences in the ability of different groups of MZP to assimilate organic carbon. In this sea area, MZP are affected by periodic currents, and temperature is the main factor affecting the distribution of the community. The MZP community is dominated by eurytopic species and CNP. CTS are more sensitive to environmental changes than HDS, among which Ascampbelliella armilla may be a better habitat indicator species. In low-latitude and oligotrophic ocean areas, phytoplankton with smaller cell diameters were found to occupy a higher proportion, while there was no significant correlation between the total concentration of integrated chlorophyll a and the biological variables of MZP. Therefore, we propose that the relationship between size-fractionated phytoplankton and MZP deserves further study. Contribution of aged organic carbon to suspended particulate organic carbon in the west... - 0 views

    We investigated dual carbon isotopes within the vertical water column at sites 67-1 and 67-2 of the western equatorial Indian Ocean to determine the source and age of particulate organic carbon (POC) and thus evaluated the contributions of modern and fossil (aged) POC. The concentration of POC ranged from 7 to 47.3 μgC L−1, δ13CPOC values ranged from -31.8 to -24.4‰, and Δ14CPOC values ranged from -548 to -111‰. Higher values of δ13CPOC and Δ14CPOC near the surface indicated an influence of autochthonous POC, whereas decreasing trends toward the bottom suggested a contribution of aged OC sources to the total POC pool. The contribution of fossil POC was lower near the surface, accounting for only 12% and 6% of the total POC at sites 67-1 and 67-2, respectively; however, in the deeper layers below 1,000 m, the contribution of fossil POC increased to 52% and 44% of the total POC at the two sites. Mechanisms for the increased contributions of fossil OC within deeper POC include the inflow of aged OC from sediments resuspended near slopes, the adsorption of old dissolved organic carbon in deep water masses, and the impact of aged OC that may originate from hydrothermal sources. This study highlights the importance of aged OC in the carbon cycle of the equatorial Indian Ocean.
