iPads in the Classroom at Clay Hill Elementary School - Leadership 360 - Education Week - 2 views

  •
"One of the biggest stumbling blocks on our road to successful iPad implementation was WiFi coverage and bandwidth. The Information Services department had to install new access points and optimize the access points we already had. We also found that we did not have enough bandwidth. Every time I launched a new App to the 200+ iPads on campus we exceeded our bandwidth and took every other Internet based function off line. Eventually though we did get our bandwidth more than doubled and that was very helpful."

4 Ways Makers Are Changing the World | Tae Yoo - 3 views

  • In its simplest form, making is learning by doing. From elementary schools to universities, educational institutions are embracing making as a practice to foster critical thinking skills and creativity, and engage students in learning.

"Hackathons, tech shops, makerspaces: These terms are increasingly prevalent in today's vernacular, and for good reason. They represent a burgeoning global movement with people of all ages developing, designing, and often marketing their creations. In the age of the maker, anyone can be an inventor. Their potential impact on the world is enormous. Innovations and discoveries are no longer produced exclusively by scientists in white lab coats or research and development departments of major corporations. Thanks to affordable technologies and online environments, individual makers can launch small companies to manufacture and market their goods. This shift in industry is influencing the way we learn, shop, sell, and interact. Here are four ways this movement is changing our world. "

Paying for technology hinders move to 21st century classrooms | SeacoastOnline.com - 4 views

  • The landscape is changing, said Cathy Higgins, state educational technology director. "There's still a very essential place for books, our traditional concepts of schooling, but there's also a really important place for using the tools that are available to us in the rest of our lives," she said.
  • To be effective in using technology in the classroom, teachers need to create a "hybrid" model," Middaugh said. "You can't just have the technology. You've got to mix it with hands-on, old-school if you will. The combination is what's going to be most effective because there are different learners."
  • Portsmouth elementary teachers, who are on the front-lines of integrating technology into their classrooms, said the advances don't take up their everyday lesson plans, but supplement and enhance them
