Seriously, if you want serious, the gaming industry is serious. It was a $21 billion business in the U.S. alone last year. Recession proof, gaming is still a growth industry. The gamers are serious, too. The World of Warcraft wiki (WOWwiki) is the second largest wiki in the world, behind Wikipedia. Gamers walk around with games devices in their pockets, allowing for almost no mental downtime.

So, you've got a stack of files from the office and license to telecommute? Good. Here's the secret to being productive without being present.

Using wikis and digital fabrication tools, Missouri farmer Marcin Jakubowski is open-sourcing the blueprints for 50 farm machines, allowing anyone to build their own tractor or harvester from scratch. And that's only the first step he's taking to write instruction sets for an entire self-sustaining farm operation with equipment costs of under $10,000.

In 2009, Wikimedia1 launched a special wiki-one dedicated to the organization's own strategy. Over the next two years, more than 1,000 volunteers generated some 900 proposals for the company's future direction and then categorized, rationalized, and formed task forces to elaborate on them. The result was a coherent strategic plan detailing a set of beliefs, priorities, and related commitments that together engendered among participants a deep sense of dedication to Wikimedia's future. Through the launch of several special projects and the continued work of self-organizing teams dedicated to specific proposals, the vision laid out in the strategic plan is now unfolding.

One of the challenges that continually surfaces in Government 2.0 initiatives is what I call the tool syndrome. People get stuck on the tools. Should we use Facebook or Twitter? Do we need a blog or a wiki? Come on, admit it. We've all been there. I know I have.

The Civic Commons is a new way to bring communities together with conversation and emerging technology. We provide the place and tools for citizens to connect with and inform one another and to take action. It's a bit like a virtual pub or coffee house, where citizens and officials can gather to talk about community issues, brainstorm solutions, coordinate plans --  and maybe even have fun and meet new people along the way.    We take some of our inspiration from Clay Shirky's book, Cognitive Surplus, which explores how communities of people can pool small amounts of their spare time, say 10 minutes a week,  to accomplish great things.  With this in mind, we've constructed our website to enable our community members to leverage their efforts into collective greatness.  Wiki-greatness, if you like.

Mozilla's Open Badges project is working to solve that problem, making it easy for anyone to issue, earn and display badges across the web -- through a shared infrastructure that's free and open to all. The result: helping people of all ages learn and display 21st century skills, unlock career and educational opportunities, and find new life pathways.

The Northern Ireland capital plans to make itself one of the most connected cities in Europe with widespread Wi-Fi to cover Belfast by 2015. Guaranteed funding of £6 million is already available through Westminster's plans to create Super Connected Cities. Further funding is possible through the scheme, and the Belfast City Council will be putting forward a bid which it hopes will more than double this funding.

"Giving is receiving" is an old adage that doesn't work for everyone - at least, not when it comes to Wi-Fi. Few of us are happy to discover unauthorized others have been leeching bandwidth off our hotspots' signals. But a new kind of WiFi hotspot launching later this year wants to change that. It's called Karma. And, like the regular kind of karma, it works by returning to you what you share with others. In this case, Wi-Fi. Anyone in the vicinity can log on to your Karma Wi-Fi hotspot for a pay-as-you-go fee of $14 per GB of data. In return for each person who purchases connectivity through your device, you earn 100 Megabytes of free data - about enough to browse the Internet for five hours, and open 10,000 emails.
