Crossing the Information Highway: The Web of Meanings and Bias in Global Media - 0 views

  •
Semali describes literacy and the teaching of literacy. Semali states that many people are subconsciously gender bias because of things they see. For example, in advertising, a women cleaning the house instead of a man may help support a more gender bias role. Every part of the media has some sort of bias if it does not seem obvious or relevant. This article is relevant to my research because although it is not directly related to politics, it shows how the media can influence people easily. The media is the key reason why a politician wins an election. If the media can control gender bias, then it is more likely to affect other people. The media can control how people are perceived and in this case, men and women.

Race & Gender in Politics - 0 views

Rubin describes how sexism is more socially acceptable that racism in our society. Rubin states it plays a bigger role in politics than most people believe. This also discusses how John McCain addressed Hilary Clinton when asked "How do we beat the bitch?" and he responded. This article also addresses Barack Obama and his stance on sexism and racism. This article would be useful in my paper because it describes a good example of how sexism can be used in a presidential election and the difference between sexism and racism. Although it does not relate directly to literacy, it does relate directly to politics and the views of sexism in the previous elections and with media. I can use this for a solid example and explanation against women.

Credit literacy: Defense against bankruptcy - 0 views

Credit card companies have historically been "out to get people" since their invention in the 1960's. It is obvious that credit card companies purposely exploit people who are now knowledgable of credit cards for their own gain. Credit card dept constitutes a large percentage of the dept in the United States. Credit Card companies need to be forced to require more information and educate their customers about their credit cards before they distribute them.

Green shares the story of Roy Kobert and John Ninfo a bankruptcy attorney and bankruptcy judge who both volunteer their time teaching kids the importance of financial literacy. With the economy plummeting out of control both men have decided to be advocates for teaching financial literacy to children and young adults. Both men have seen the devastating effect that financial literacy ignorance has caused on the economy and individuals. They fear that if creditors can lure the youth into debt, our countries youth future is in jeopardy. Their goal is to stop the madness before it starts through education intervention. The article also talks about several different programs promoting financial literacy that have been implemented in different states across the country.

Inequality In Obesigenic Environments: Fast Food Density in New York City - 0 views

  •
Kwate's research primarily served to analyze the density of fast-food restaurants in New York City with a focus on the correlations of race and economic status or income on restaurant density. This research is especially beneficial to me because the data from this source is from the perspective of a United States major city. Results from this study showed that there were more restaurants in black areas than there were in white areas. Also economic status or income of the population did not seem to have a correlation with fast-food restaurant density.

Obesity Prevalence and the Local Food Environment - 0 views

  •
Morland's research was conducted over a 6 month span in 2003. Telephone surveys were used to call random telephone numbers in the phonebook in the states of North Carolina and Mississippi. These telephone surveys asked the recipients for their address, gender, height and body weight. The height and body weight was used to calculate for obesity. This study is especially useful to my research because it analyzes the addresses of the survey recipients and compares them to the concentration of fast food restaurants in that area. The important information I could use is that the more concentrated the fast food restaurants were, the more obesity was found within that area.

Monkey Business - 0 views

Despite the refutation of intelligent design as legitimate science by the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, eighteen states have suggested the introduction of antievolution legislation (as of 2005). In the wake of this movement, librarians, the ultimate guardians of knowledge, may face challenges of censorship by religious conservatives. Suppressing access to information is in direct conflict with democratic ideals. This article contains specific advice for librarians regarding the protection of diverse resources. Although the O'Sullivans write to a specific audience, their message is indicative of the relationship between censorship and literacy.

For Students, the New Kind of Literacy Is Financial College offer programs in managing ... - 0 views

  •
Supiano gives us a look at financial literacy programs at universities across the United States. Attracting students to attend the program did not prove difficult, but the problem is, that many sign up, but don't follow through with attending. The program intention is to help students master the basics of budgeting, saving, and not spending beyond their means. College students especially need to understand the implication of irresponsible spending since tuition, fees and housing cost continue to rise. Supiano argues that financial literacy affects student retention, productivity, and mental health. The article also discusses where the responsibility should be for providing financial education. Financial-aid offices aren't equipped to offer an in-depth and broader education in financial literacy but they try. Home continues to be the best place to start the ground work for financial literacy.
