Design Notes: Asymmetry (D#4, HW#1) - 0 views

  •
This webpage is dedicated to giving tips and tricks to creating "perfect" asymmetry within a design. When trying to create asymmetry do not put any text or object in the direct center or corner of the page. Also, make sure to start with a few large objects and keep them different proportions for added interest.

D #4 HW #1 Asymmetrical balance in web design - 0 views

  •
This webpage explores asymmetry in web design. The author mentions that many websites use the technique of balancing a large image on one side with text on the other. He talks about how an image can be directly tied with the text, such as an example of a product, or it could be more decorative in that it plays off an idea presented by the site but doesn't necessarily reflect the product or service. This site also explores the use of backgrounds and how to perhaps make a common two-column design more unique.

Contrast: CNN is centered and bold white against a red background, which makes it easy to read. Breaking and main news stories are in groups of three and set as the largest images at the top of the page. Bold white text against a black background makes the focal point pop. Repetition: Menu items are white against red background in smaller text under CNN. All links are blue, bullets red, titles bold large and black. Alignment: everything aligned to left for each grouping object. Proximity: News is categorized into different groups, i.e.) world, business, entertainment... etc.
  •
I think CNN is a great example of a grid - a very sophisticated look. The beginning is a 3 grid and as you scroll it transfers to a 4 grid. They really make the most of the white space and keep it very organized with a justified text.
  •
CNN has both different text sizes and color. Also with this, there are different borders within 1 page to show the many different stories and sections that are being highlighted within a page

Web Design Tips: The Use of Balance | Webitect - 1 views

  •
This site is a good resource because it gives good examples and explanations as well as other great links to use as resources of balance.
  •
This was my favorite site found in my search for related content to chapter 4 of basics of design, and on the topic of balance. This site explains how important balance is in webdesign and how it make make a site look "good" and give it something extra. It talks about the different types of balance; formal. informal, and radial, and how to include them on your site or page. Lastly it explains that looking at examples can be a real help in learning to use balance in your design.
  •
Gives ways of balancing in web design. In order to balance the web page, you use contrasts in light (light versus dark), large designs versus smaller, and etcetera.

This site is great for my understanding of contrast because it gives simple examples, so you can see exactly how important contrast is. It talks about contrast in terms of color and value, opacity, and placement.
  •
The examples in this website were really good I enjoyed that these were short and to the point descriptions of contrast.
  •
I really like the examples in this site talking about contrast. I like the fact that they mention making it grayscale and seeing how it looks that way. What a good way to tell if it is going to be too much or too little contrast and will it be readable!

This website is really cool. I like how it has examples of what good contrast would look like. It has to do with picking the correct colors, and size.

This site talks about symmetrical and asymmetrical balance which relates to the book in terms of "organization" and also direction. How certain things are laid out need to catch the viewers attention effectively. Texture is also mentioned on this site and the book. Texture helps the eyes of the reader/viewer flow through the page in the intended direction.

In the text book Basics of Design page 44 it specifically gives examples of contrasting with letters. Figure 3-6 uses thin lines for the work "thin" and a wider font for the word "wide". This website specifically gives an explanation of the text word uses.

  • Change the fonts. The font size, font weight, or font family can all provide contrast to your text. Headlines provide a lot of contrast to surrounding text. Links provide great contrast in text. The color change and the addition of an underline work well to contrast from the surrounding text. Use different sized images and elements. If you have a section of text that is the primary focus of a page, you might make it large and all the

Contrast - Basic Principles of Design
  •
I like this article because it gives the general information about contrast for beginners like me. It is easy to read and the use of bullet points makes it easy to follow. This article is really useful because it relates to web design specifically rather than just design/art.
  •
This website explains the importance of using contrast beyond just color contrast. Using font, layout shapes, images etc one can use contrast without using only color
  •

  • The important thing about contrast is that the elements should be completely different. Not just a little bit different

You need to use items that aren't too similar, as this would defeat the purpose of contrast

This article is one of my favorites because it does more than just tell you how to use contrast but it explains why it is important. It discusses the benefits of using contrast in relevance to web and ad design.  This article is easy to read by its use of number lists and bolded headings.
  •
I liked this website a lot as well. Instead of showing ways in which how to use contrast, it explains three ways that contrast is important. One is that contrast is attractive to the eye, the other is that contrast aids in organization of info, and finally contrast creates focus. A key point that was made that I think is good to emphasize is that "contrast elements should be COMPLETELY different, not just a little bit"
  •
This website gives very nice examples and pictures that help explain the contrast principle. I love how attractive to the eye all the images are.

This website gives you a gallery of different kinds of pictures with contrast. It also gives you tutorials on how to use better contrast. It explains contrast to be the measure of the difference in brightness between light and dark areas in a scene. It also explains contrast too vary due to lighting.
