(D12,H5) Link 1 - Is it time to make a video resume? - 0 views

  •
This blog on the business network raises some good points about the merits of video resumes. It asks relevant questions about the purpose and benefits of the system, and also offers some cautions to take when creating one.

Although this is foremost a retailer of products, Amazon sticks out to me as a successful model of the WWIC concept. Being able to read both customer and professional product reviews allows me to investigate a product's merits and deficincies with ease. I have joked with my wife that Amazon may know me better than anyone. The items Amazon recommends for me are often so closely aligned with my interests that I am impressed with their algorithms to determine my preferences. Occasionally this list of suggestion will contain an item of no interest to me, and I am able to simply click and delete it. Somehow Amazon manages to consult with me in a way I find highly effective.

(D9, H3) The New Media Caucus - 0 views

  •
The New Media Caucus is an organization seeking to advance the theories and concepts involved in emerging media technologies. Their aim is to provide a comprehensive area in which to analyze and critically review practices and presence of digital media as both an artistic medium and one of utility for technological advancement (robotics, virtual environments, etc).

(D8, H4) Link 2 - Improving the sidebar - 0 views

  •
This article examines the blog's sidebar, one important element that can be either a total waste of screen space or a useful tool to assist the readers in navigating the blog. The article functions on the utility of the sidebar layout and is aimed at making it a valuable resource for both the author and reader as a way to highlight key information while providing the audience a convenient way to access the materials we aim to present.

(D8, H4) Link 1 - 31 Days to a better blog... - 0 views

This is an interesting site in that the blogger spent two years analyzing the things that both limited and improved a blog. There are some helpful ideas not just about the presentation and content production aspects but also thoughts on having a vision/direction for the blog always in mind. Some of the key ideas about having a key strategy in mind and working within a well planned concept are useful ideas to bear in mind.

(D7, H1) Link 2: Digital History - 0 views

  •
This site is of interest as it seeks to compile and make available a complete collection of historical documents, sorted and organized by area of academic or topical interest. Such a project is a prime example of the utility of a networked information age - students and teachers alike have direct access to primary source materials rather than depending on the analyses of others. Being physically distant from an important work is no longer a barrier to access. While not purely a link dedicated to the process of documentation, I think this is a valuable inclusion as an example of the power of digital documentation as an assistant to our own documentation.

(D7, H1) Link 3:Good Documentation Practices - 0 views

  •
This is a link to a short slideshow by John Berga covering some of the basic and best practice suggestions for creating good documentation. The slideshow is aimed at a corporate audience and therefore especially relevant to technical communicators working in such environments. Although there is little in-depth material in this link, it appears to offer sound advice that relates to general documentation procedure.

This is an interesting little website showing us a variety of projects developed to showcase the power of Fair Use information, to discuss the political significance of the laws, and to generate a community of people to actively support the Public Knowledge organization.

D#7HW#6: U.S. Copyright Office - Fair Use - 1 views

  •
This site appears to host the definitive documentation and rules on the U.S. copyright system. This link is to what would appear to be a simple one page description on the issue, but I think it really shows how confusing and fuzzy the subject can be.

The Small Print: Writing User Interface Instructions - 1 views

This seems like a fantastic resource for technical writers or any other creator of instructional materials. I like that emphasis is given to the planning, thinking and analyzing of the content and audience before even beginning to write the instructions. There are several good bits of advice in this site.

(D#4, H#4) Wall Street Journal - 0 views

The home page of the Wall Street journal is a site that I think has adhered well to the good use of design principles we have discussed. Certain elements (location of links, tools, etc) are consistent, repeated no matter where your in-site browsing leads. It is always a simple matter to return the home page, and the content, though varied in topic and section, are placed and located in instantly comfortable page areas. The use of color and contrast to delineate different sections draw the eyes right where they need to be, and the fusion of advertising and written content is fused seamlessly. This website is nearly overflowing with all manner of content, yet the design and appearance of the home page is neither cluttered nor confusing. I believe this is an excellent example of the successful use of C.R.A.P. design elements.

Though this may seem like a 'gimme,' this site provides the very platform by which this course has become possible. With a professor and students scattered far and wide in location and schedule, this site is convincing evidence of the power of the virtual worlds referred to by Flew. I am unlikely to meet any of my fellow students in person during this course, but I know in advance that I will make new friends and get to know them. Being able to obtain a higher education in a virtual online world is an amazing use of technology.
