A Crash Course in Typography: The Basics of Type - Noupe - 0 views

  •
The anatomy of typeface has many different areas to it that include alignment, type, mood, size, weight and style, and how text is described when put on a line. All these things were covered in the chapter 10 and 11 reading for the week.

Chapter 10- Resource - 0 views

  • Decide what medium lets you proofread most carefully. Some people like to work right at the computer, while others like to sit back with a printed copy that they can mark up as they read.
  • If possible, do your editing and proofreading in several short blocks of time, rather than all at once—otherwise, your concentration is likely to wane.
  • Citations Have you appropriately cited quotes, paraphrases, and ideas you got from sources? Are your citations in the correct format? (See the UNC Libraries citation tutorial for more information.)

  • The proofreading process becomes more efficient as you develop and practice a systematic strategy.

Expanded methods of editing and proofreading documents. The form of medium you edit in, by reading the document on the computer or on a printed out hard copy, can effect the process.

Chapter 10- Resource - 0 views

  • 3. Use Tricks to Freshen Your Eye Every experienced technical editor has her favorite trick to get a fresh perspective on a document. Here are some of the ones I’ve heard over the years: Turn the document upside down. Start from the end and read backwards, going line by line. Zoom in to 200 percent or more, particularly to edit graphics. Zoom out until you can see the entire page to edit overall page elements, such as the space before and after headings. Read aloud to both slow yourself down and to catch errors you’ve overlooked reading silently. Create a PDF of your document and proofread that.

10 Principles Of Effective Web Design - Smashing Magazine - 0 views

  •
I found that this site closely related to the ideas and principals from chapter one of Basics of Design. The site specifically talks about the principles of effective web design and website usability. It talks about how the typical web users brain works and the proper design to get the most out of them. This site shows the effectiveness of simplicity in design and how to get the most out of the space which you are working with. Also it mentioned having effective writing through talking business and the use of bold/italics keywords. Lastly the site encouraged designers to not fear having blank/white space on their site and to communicate with language that is clear and consistent with the concept of the site. Friedman, Vitaly. Here is my assignment and more to come on the "Get Started" Module. I thought we were supposed to bookmark it on our individual diigo profiles. It wasn't until I saw the bookmark option at the top of the screen that I realised I made a foolishly careless error :( ! Anyway, better late than never.

D #4 HW #1 Asymmetrical balance in web design - 0 views

  •
This webpage explores asymmetry in web design. The author mentions that many websites use the technique of balancing a large image on one side with text on the other. He talks about how an image can be directly tied with the text, such as an example of a product, or it could be more decorative in that it plays off an idea presented by the site but doesn't necessarily reflect the product or service. This site also explores the use of backgrounds and how to perhaps make a common two-column design more unique.
