I think that the smart phone industry needs a new competitor and this $7 billion dollar deal is a step in the right direction for Microsoft. As far as Apple goes, the Iphones are becoming so redundant in my opinion and there needs to be something other than the Iphone/Android competition. Installing these Microsoft smart phones brings something new to the table.

Football Players May Be More Vulnerable to Alzheimer's Disease - 8 views

In any contact sport and especially in the cases of ones as physically demanding and brutal as football, you have to expect injuries/concussions. It's horrible to read about ex-NFL players who later in their lives have serious brain problems whether it be with memory or some other kind of mental processing. Some of these ex-players have even committed suicide due to the fact that they could not cope with their state. Football youth need to be educated as much as possible about the short and long-term effects of concussions.

Travel Article on Marin - 30 views

"Welcome to Marin County, the most beautiful, bucolic, privileged, liberal, hippie-dippie place on the earth. Love it or loathe it - it's just hard to leave it." After reading this brief summary of Marin, I couldn't help but grin with some agreement. The article however, seemed composed strangely. I thought that Merz's unusual experience in Marin for 51 years was interesting, but I do agree with Billie in that it lacked a focus and it seemed to be packed with unnecesary anecdotes.

I think that if these "smartwatches" are tested as much as the Google Glass is/was, it has the potential to be an effective piece of technology. I liked the video with peoples' reactions to the Google Glass as well and the funny reactions that were made to this strange concept of having a holographic system infront of you.

Student Print Newspapers are Slowly Dying - 26 views

The future of news is all going to be digital. Almost all major newspapers today have websites and access to hundreds of interesting articles at just the click of a button. Riley made a good point that printed news was once a revelation, but we are in the midst of an adavanced technological era, and with so many people with access to computers, wasting all the paper needed for the ridiculous amount of copies seems too old-fashioned.

Dress Codes Are Sexist & Homophobic - 45 views

I find the argument made from students and teachers basically saying that the way certain students dress is"distracting" very ridiculous and juvenile. Unless the school you attend has a strict dress code policy, I think the freedom of wearing what you wish (within reason) is a right that students who attend public and non-uniform private schools love. Here at Tam, short shorts and tiny tee-shirts are often cracked down upon as well as the guys with their pants almost around their ankles. The distribution of attention between the two genders however is far from equal.

Mill Valley's (Homeless) Woman About Town - 10 views

This article discusses a homeless woman named Rebecca Chapman who lived in Mill Valley for 36 years, and about two years ago lost her job and home. Her perspective on the people in Mill Valley is intriguing and how she is treated before and after her homelessness is vastly different for her. How do you think the general population of Mill Valley reacts to seeing a homeless woman or any homeless person? What would you do to help if this was someone you knew or even grew up with?

Judge Rules Against Sheriff in Racial Profiling Incident - 4 views

With an issue such as this where there is a race associated with the majority of the illegal immigration, it becomes increasingly difficult to try and not use superficial prejudice to determine who is and most likely is not a candidate for illegal immigration. Sheriff Arpaio, especially in the area of Phoenix, has an extremely difficult job of keeping order without violating Constitutional Rights. The humiliation that someone might experience when pulled over and discovered to be a citizen, and then that person knowing that they were profiled for their race makes me wonder what a respectful alternative would be that is still affective.

The Abortion Issue Returns - 5 views

Beginning around next fall, the Supreme Court will have to deal with one of the largest controversies in the U.S., abortion. The court will be taking into account the 43 restrictions issued in 2012 regarding mandating unnecessary medical procedures, increased regulation of abortion providers, hospital privileges, and later abortions. What are your opinions on these restrictions and what do you think will be different about how the court deals with this topic?

Are caffeinated drinks safe? - 4 views

When I read that American energy drink sales made $8.6 billion dollars in 2012 I was totally blow away. Monster, Red Bull, Rockstar, and all the other energy drinks are cans of pure sugar with ridiculously high amounts of caffeine that in no way benefit your body. If you need a caffeine boost, a cup of coffee is fine but I personally think that much caffeine in your system is unhealthy.

Landfill sites covered over with solar panels - 9 views

I think this is a brilliant use of all of the space that landfills take up and should definitely be used as much as possible throughout the U.S. The capped landfills make the perfect spaces for them and allow the bulky panels to be completely out of the way. The fact that "more are popping up each day" shows that this idea is being capitalized on and gives these "eye-sores" another purpose.

Harvard Bias Test - 88 views

For me, the test proved to be almost under the assumption that I had some racist aspect of me that I was surely hiding. The questions about race were very blunt and some of them seemed to make no logical sense to answer. I found myself having to stop and think longer than I probably should have for some of the questions because the list of answers provided all seemed equally offensive. I agree with Sam A. on the intention of the test, I just didn't like how it was presented.

Is Gun Control Dead? - 8 views

It interests me that even after recent incidents like the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting in December and the Aurora Shooting earlier in July that there are still many people who believe that the right to bear assault weapons should be valued. Personally, I just dont see the purpose of a civilian having the "need" to own an assault rifle. These AR-15 rifles, also referred to as carbines, can be used safely in the hands of those responsible and clearly deadly in the hands of the criminally insane. In regards to the article, I like the point made about a lot of Americans who, "...don't realize that those laws are far weaker than they think." The Second Amendment is clear and the right to bear arms is one of the many freedoms we Americans have, it's just a question of whether it's a necessity.

With an issue such as this, the tragedies and national statistics are shocking reminders of how serious this issue truly is. The 387,000 injuries and 3,331 deaths stat throughout the U.S. in 2010 had me convinced that this "crack down" is a total benefit. The CHP's ticketing policy seems completely appropriate and should be treated as both an enforcement of the law as well as a potential life-saver.

Racially Segregated Prom, Georgia - 52 views

This was shocking to me to know that this Wilcox County High School still had lingering racism and segregation in the year 2013. It was pathetic to me that up until this year, no students or staff took a stand against how wrong this policy was and trying to petition against it. It seems unreal that even after the historical presidency of president Barack Obama, there is still ongoing racial segregating.
