I agree with Liz and Dom and believe that they turn to drugs to help them with their memories of war. Like in the movie "Where is the front line from here?" a soldier said that the worst thing is war is not that you might die, but a brother will die. These soldiers have felt enough grief and sadness, and to help cope with it all they start using drugs or drinking alcohol.
Post traumatic stress disorder has always caused suicide. I think there has been an increase in PTSD because of the way we are killing an being killed in these modern times. Bombs and fully automatic guns can be very shocking to use, and to see inflicted on someone you are very close to.
