    This article tells it all in the conclusion: "Changing our current practice pattern could take many years, but we may one day prescribe cholesterol-raising medications to certain patients". The long term effect of lowering cholesterol MAY stabilize plaques (not reduce), but at the expense of the brain. So, we may all have stable plaques, but we just won't know it because our brains will be fried.

    Great diagram.  This diagram shows the current knowledge of how plaque is formed in arteries.  The major point here is the oxidation of LDL and the activation of the innate immune system and resultant inflammatory signaling.  In the vast majority of cases, the inflammation is driving this process, not the LDL.

    SAMe helps to correct disordered homocysteine metabolism due to B- vitamin deficiency found in Alzheimer's disease.  SAMe show to reduce amyloid production, improve memory, decrease Tau, and reduced plaque formation.  Now, this was in a mice model, but SAMe as a methyl donor can benefit clients with dementia with minimal side effects.

    No surprise that progesterone and the synthetic progestin medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) have different effects on the vascular endothelium. MPA inhibits NO production, whereas Progesterone maintains NO production.  MPA promoted platelet adhesion whereas Progesterone did not--significant implication in plaque formation.

    Study of men < 70 finds that low Total Testosterone and Free Testosterone is associated with increased Carotid Intima-media thickness (CIMT), increased endothelial dysfunction.  Atherosclerotic plaque and hsCRP were also found to correlate but were adjusted out when age, DM, HgbA1c, lipids, and BMI were excluded.

    Only abstract available here.  Study finds oleuropein, compound in olive oil, increases insulin secretion in response to glucose via unregulated ERK/MAPK signaling.  Oleuropein also blocked the cytotoxicity induced by amyloids i.e. beta amyloid plaques are well known hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.
