Statins use and coronary artery plaque composition: Results from the International Mult... - 0 views

  • Statin use is associated with an increased prevalence and extent of coronary plaques possessing calcium
  • As compared with individuals not taking statins, those taking statins possessed a significantly higher prevalence of obstructive CAD, as well as higher numbers of vessels with obstructive CAD
  • non-calcified plaques (NCP)
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • non-calcified (NCP), mixed (MP), or calcified (CP) plaque
  • statin use was each associated with a significantly higher prevalence of NCP, MP and CP
  • statin use was associated with increased presence of MP [odds ratio (OR) 1.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.27–1.68, p < 0.001] and CP (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.36–1.74, p < 0.001], but not NCP
  • statin use was associated with increasing numbers of coronary segments possessing MP and CP but not associated with increasing numbers of coronary segments possessing NCP
  • North America, Europe and Asia
  • A total of 6673 individuals (2413 on statin therapy and 4260 not on statin therapy) comprised the study population
  • we identified a strong association of statin use to coronary artery plaque features
  • statin use was associated with a differentially increased prevalence and extent of MP and CP
  • one potential unifying hypothesis is that rather than regression of coronary plaque, statins may contribute to the conversion of coronary plaque constituents, perhaps by conversion of NCP to plaque possessing calcium
  • Coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA)
  • Statin use was associated with a higher frequency of severe coronary artery stenoses as well as numbers of coronary vessels with obstructive CAD
  •
Study finds statin therapy associated with increased coronary plaque with calcium.

Cholesterol-lowering therapy and cell membranes. Stable plaque at the expense of unsta... - 0 views

  •
This article tells it all in the conclusion: "Changing our current practice pattern could take many years, but we may one day prescribe cholesterol-raising medications to certain patients". The long term effect of lowering cholesterol MAY stabilize plaques (not reduce), but at the expense of the brain. So, we may all have stable plaques, but we just won't know it because our brains will be fried.

Pathway Central: LDL Oxidation in Atherogenesis - 0 views

  •
Great diagram.  This diagram shows the current knowledge of how plaque is formed in arteries.  The major point here is the oxidation of LDL and the activation of the innate immune system and resultant inflammatory signaling.  In the vast majority of cases, the inflammation is driving this process, not the LDL.

  • myloid plaques and microgliosis in the brain of Alzheimer’s mice fed with GSE were also reduced by 49% and 70%, respectively
  • Curcumin also significantly reduced brain Aβ burden and microglia activation
  • polyphenol-rich GSE prevents the Aβ deposition and attenuates the inflammation in the brain of a transgenic mouse model, and this thus is promising in delaying development of AD.

Increasing uric acid concentrations is found to be associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in both men and women.  Equally, it is associated with carotid plaque formation.

This is the unified paper theory of CVD and vitamin C as published by Pauling and Rath.  Vitamin C deficiency results in a decrease in the integrity and stability of the vascular wall.  Chronic deficiency results in in an increase in and accumulation of Lp(a) which leads to atherosclerotic plaques.

SAMe helps to correct disordered homocysteine metabolism due to B- vitamin deficiency found in Alzheimer's disease.  SAMe show to reduce amyloid production, improve memory, decrease Tau, and reduced plaque formation.  Now, this was in a mice model, but SAMe as a methyl donor can benefit clients with dementia with minimal side effects.

Differential regulation of endothelium behavior by progesterone and medroxyprogesterone... - 0 views

  •
No surprise that progesterone and the synthetic progestin medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) have different effects on the vascular endothelium. MPA inhibits NO production, whereas Progesterone maintains NO production.  MPA promoted platelet adhesion whereas Progesterone did not--significant implication in plaque formation.

Direct Detection and Quantification of Transition Metal Ions in Human Atherosclerotic P... - 0 views

  • Statistically elevated levels of iron were detected in the intima of lesions compared with healthy controls
  • Elevated levels of copper were also detected (7.51 versus 2.01 pmol/mg tissue, lesion versus healthy control, respectively
  • These data support the hypothesis that iron accumulates in human lesions and may contribute to disease progression
  •
Iron and Copper accumulation in blood vessel wall may play role in diesease progression

  •
Study of men < 70 finds that low Total Testosterone and Free Testosterone is associated with increased Carotid Intima-media thickness (CIMT), increased endothelial dysfunction.  Atherosclerotic plaque and hsCRP were also found to correlate but were adjusted out when age, DM, HgbA1c, lipids, and BMI were excluded.

  •
Only abstract available here.  Study finds oleuropein, compound in olive oil, increases insulin secretion in response to glucose via unregulated ERK/MAPK signaling.  Oleuropein also blocked the cytotoxicity induced by amyloids i.e. beta amyloid plaques are well known hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease.
