The purpose of this Level II professional development is to: Focus on specifics in instructional practices for mathematics; evaluating and enhancing mathematics curricula to meet the needs of learners; progress monitoring (National Council of Teachers of Math Big Ideas Probe). Advice for diagnostic throughout the school year using Curriculum Based Measurements and Mathematics Diagnostic Assessment. Differentiating math for students with diverse levels of mathematical competency by using data and key ideas for differentiated instruction. Action goals/plans for follow up using Video-Conference Sessions.

Click here to download the brochure with registration information (PDF) What: This one-day workshop will provide paraprofessionals with training and information that will focus on how paraprofessionals can assist teachers in bringing instruction within the reach of all learners.  Participants will experience a differentiated classroom and learn strategies for identifying student learner characteristics. They will apply this information to a lesson design framework that addresses rich strategies, flexible grouping, differentiated assessment and additional decisions for some learners.  Paraprofessionals will also learn how to assist teachers to create the classroom environment that will support the differentiation process. When: February 21, 2011 9:00am - 3:30pm Mountain Where: First Presbyterian Church 535 North Ewing Street Helena, MT  59601 Additional Notes: The Paraeducator Mid-Winter Conference is provided in the region at no cost to the participants. The conference is intended to increase the skill level of adults supporting children in a variety of educational settings. Certificates will be given to participants to add to their portfolios. Five (5) OPI Renewal Units are available. As in past years, the school district will be reimbursed $25.00 per paraeducator attending the conference. This stipend is an attempt to offset some of the costs incurred by the district.

Identifying High-Ability/High Potential Students What: A hands-on workshop on best practices in Identification for Gifted Education Programming for Administrators, School Psychologists and Gifted Education Coordinators. Participants will gain information about achievement and ability testing, observation tools, portfolios and using multiple criteria for identification. Opportunities for discussions to allow for adaptation of material for each school setting will be included. Featured Workshop Facilitator: Dr. Karen L. Westberg is a faculty member in the Gifted/Creative/Talented education program at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. She spent ten years as a faculty member at the University of Connecticut where she was a principal investigator at the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented (NRC/GT) and taught coursework in gifted education and research methodology. She began her career as a classroom teacher and gifted education specialist in Minnesota schools. She has served on the Executive Committee of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and is a member of the Gifted Child Quarterly Editorial Board. Her research interests include classroom practices, gifted education identification, program development and differentiating instruction.
