What Do Teachers Want? - Bridging Differences - Education Week - 0 views

  • Another survey, released about the same time, has not gotten the attention it deserves. This one conducted by Scholastic and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is called Primary Sources: 2012. It contains valuable information about what teachers think. Among other things, the survey asked teachers what they believe will have the greatest impact on improving academic achievement. This is what teachers said were the most important factors: 1. Family involvement and support (84 percent said it would have a "very strong impact"); 2. High expectations for all students (71 percent said it would have a "very strong impact"); 3. Fewer students in each class (62 percent said it would have a "very strong impact"); 4. Effective and engaged principals and building-level leaders (57 percent said it would have a "very strong impact"). These were the factors that teachers said were least important in improving academic achievement: 1. A longer school day (6 percent); 2. Monetary rewards for teachers based on the performance of the entire school (8 percent); 3. Monetary rewards for teachers based on their individual performance (9 percent); 4. A longer school year (10 percent).

    It is well known among secondary teachers that an increasing number of students are ill equipped to read and comprehend the textbooks designed for proficient secondary readers.  Reading instruction is a responsibility shared by all teachers, regardless of level or content. Educators who accept this idea are already a step ahead - but for secondary teachers who may have never had the opportunity to learn how to teach basic reading strategies, the task is daunting.  This session will examine Before, During, and After reading strategies that can be applied in all content area classrooms and support increased comprehension of the text. When all subject area teachers have students use common strategies, it leads to greater independence, more responsibility in the learning, and increased student outcomes for all students.

Looking for Parents to Become NAMI Basics Teachers: Training Coming in June! - 0 views

The course is designed to be taught using a co-leader training model. Both teachers must have been trained in use of the curriculum by either a NAMI National trainer or a nationally certified state trainer. Teacher trainings are expensive, time consuming and can be emotionally draining for all involved. In an effort to ensure that only the best candidates participate in the training, NAMI organizations are encouraged to use an application process to select individuals to participate in teacher trainings. There is a sample Teacher Application form in the COURSE FORMS section on page CF-1 that can be used as the first step. Individuals who are interested in being trained to teach the curriculum must meet the following criteria: Be the parent or other primary caregiver of an individual who began experiencing symptoms prior to the age of 13 (it is not necessary that the child have been formally diagnosed prior to 13). It is important that all individuals trained in this curriculum have lived through the experiences of having a young child with a mental illness. Be at a point in their life where they are familiar and comfortable with the emotional issues families face and can self-disclose about their own feelings of guilt, anger, shame, ambivalence and grief regarding their life situation. Be willing to participate in an intensive weekend training on how to teach the curriculum. Be willing to make the commitment to participants in the course, the co-leader and to the NAMI organization to complete the 15-hour course once it begins.

  • What: The annual Montana Mentor Institute 2011 – the Art and Science of Teacher Mentoring is scheduled for August 8-10, 2011, at the Best Western GranTree Inn in Bozeman. This year the institute will have a novice strand for mentors new to the teacher mentoring process and a skilled strand for teacher mentors who have previously attended a mentor institute. The structure for the institute includes two days of skills and concept training, and a half day of team planning and resources available to support instruction. Districts that have developed teacher mentor programs in Montana consistently report that providing high-quality training to the mentors is a challenge. The Mentor Institute is a great place to have your teacher mentors trained. The institute aligns with Montana correlates in the following areas: Academic Performance – Instruction, and Learning Environment – Professional Growth and Development. The institute will provide renewal units, and graduate credit (for an additional cost).     The Forest for Every Classroom program provides 11 days of professional development that immerses teachers in Place Based Education and the inclusion of Service Learning projects in their classroom curriculum.  The workshop takes place through 5 overnight sessions around the Missoula area.  Teachers leave the program with stronger natural and cultural history understanding, connections to local professionals and educational organizations, new resources for classroom use, and memories of truly unique experiences.  Teachers will design a place based education curriculum and service learning project with guidance through the course.     Through MRESA3, the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics is pleased to offer a two-day workshop designed to help teacher implement the new Standards for mathematical Practice. The Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These workshops will focus on the eight mathematical practice standards for all grade levels. Students are expected to: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, Reason abstractly and quantitatively, Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, Model with mathematics, Use appropriate tools strategically, Attend to precision, Look for and make use of structure, Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.     What:
    Assisting with Reading Fluency in the Classroom will provide the paraeducator with the information and skills needed to assist classroom teachers in meeting the literacy needs of a variety of students. It deals with the specific area of reading fluency. It prepares paraeducators to understand important fluency concepts and terms, and to use a variety of research-based instructional techniques that improve fluency at the word, phrase, sentence, and connected text levels. The Instructional Teamwork Academy academy is designed to help paraeducators work effectively on a team. This course is recommended for teachers as well. Teachers and/or paraeducators may take this course without the other team member, but it is most effective when teams take the course together. The academy consists of four modules consisting of introductory material regarding teamwork, delineation of roles and responsibilities, classroom instruction, and behavior management.

    When upper elementary or secondary students fail written assessments, teachers often assume it's because they lack specific content knowledge. But what if it's simply because they cannot read the multisyllabic words? All reading consists of three components: word identification, vocabulary, and comprehension. Word identification is often overlooked and can be the root of students' failure. Hear about new evidence-based data on prefixes, suffixes, and Greek roots occurring most often in content-area words that supports a shared responsibility for strengthening students' literacy skills. Discover quick, formative assessments for upper elementary and secondary teachers that measure students' ability to use knowledge of syllable types, syllable division patterns, and common morphemes (e.g., prefixes, suffixes, Greek roots) to decode multisyllabic words. The CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook, a comprehensive resource in teaching research based reading instruction, is used during the session as a resource in helping teachers improve instruction in multisyllabic word instruction.
