What:
Technology and digital citizenship are becoming even more important as state's begin implementing the CCSS. This interactive, hands-on workshop will share resources and demonstrate through model lessons, how to efficiently use resources and technology to support CCSS. Attendees will participate in lessons demonstrating the teaching of digital citizenship, English Language Arts, and Math, all aligned to CCSS and integrating technology throughout. The purpose and the goals of the CCSS will also be re-viewed. Jeff Crews and Dean Phillips of Beyond the Chalk. Beyond the Chalk was co-founded by Jeff and Dean who believe in the power of education and the need to continuously provide transformational learning experiences for our teachers and students. Technology, when used effectively as a tool by teachers and students, can facilitate the change from the traditional form of education to a 21st century paradigm. Beyond the Chalk is committed to providing a set of rich and diverse professional development experiences for all educators. What:
The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Content are designed to be focused and coherent in order to improve mathematics achievement. These content standards are articulated over time as a sequence of topics and performances that are logical and move students to deeper understanding of mathematics. The standards stress conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas and incorporate research-based learning progressions about how students mathematical knowledge, skill, and understanding develop over time. These workshops are presented as a series of four sessions. Each session will build on the previous sessions. Participants must attend all four sessions.

The Montana Regional Education Service Area III (MRESA3) is offering an opportunity for professional development on the new revisions for Gifted and Talented in Montana. This workshop is designed to assist schools and districts to have the necessary components for their Gifted and Talented Program Plan to submit to OPI. The focus of this workshop is to equip the participant with strategies necessary to construct a gifted program that fits their district and population of students. Participants will be presented with the OPI framework for Gifted Education Programs and a Gifted Program Planning Template. Emphasis will be placed on identification of gifted and twice exceptional children as well as characteristics of sound curriculum for gifted students. Several teaching strategies that enable the teacher to differentiate the core curriculum to meet the needs of not only the gifted student but all students in the classroom will be presented. Participants will come away with the ability to complete a comprehensive plan for their district and/or develop a differentiated curriculum unit or lesson.

Students are expected to: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, Reason abstractly and quantitatively, Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, Model with mathematics, Use appropriate tools strategically, Attend to precision, Look for and make use of structure, Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) require both students and teachers to demonstrate digital literacy skills by publishing texts online and developing communication skills through the use of different technology tools. The Mapping Media to the Common Core course (part 1) introduces teachers to six different multimedia products which students can create to meet the CCSS requirements; These strategies can also be used to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with disabilities or those with high abilities! Each participant will use an iPad to access the interactive course eBook, as well as, create and share a variety of media products during the course. Participants will need access to an iPad for this course.

Please let me know if your child is interested. I am hoping we will have at least 6-12 kids interested in this special program. I have enlisted the assistance of a college friend of mine who has arranged this entire class at no charge to any of us. She is using the dance studio where she teaches other classes and will be receiving credits for this independent learning class. If it all goes well, we can maybe do it again next Spring. In 1950, she was diagnosed with autism and her parents were told she should be institutionalized. www.templegrandin.com/ If you have seen the HBO movie "Temple Grandin" you know how important Eustacia Cutler, Dr. Grandin's mother, was to her success. Come and hear her first-hand account of raising Temple Grandin at a time when Autism barely had a name. As part of the conference, Ms. Cutler will be the featured guest at an evening reception for parents of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder. In addition to keynote presentations, multiple breakouts sessions each day will feature a choice of educational, medical, adolescent/adult, and family support strands. Lighting the Way welcomes family members, educators, social workers, childcare providers, support professionals and other community members to attend the event.
