    Wide use of RTI/MTSS as a prevention framework in general education poses potential problems for unprepared special educators and their programs. For example, RTI as a schoolwide prevention framework is technically incompatible with traditional severe discrepancy models, which require students to experience academic failure prior to identification. This interactive workshop will address these types of concerns and provide recommendations for avoiding potential legal pitfalls associated with RTI implementation.

  • There seems to be some confusion as to what Response to Intervention is and how teachers and schools can use this approach to help children. So, let’s start with some basics: RTI is not an action verb. You cannot RTI a student to support his or her learning and behavioral needs. RTI is not a place or a room in your school; you cannot send a student to the RTI room. So what exactly is RTI, then? RTI was added to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004 and became part of the nation’s approach to identifying and helping students who are struggling academically or behaviorally in school. It is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning, and you, general education teachers, special educators, and specialists, provide th0se services.

  • Click here to register for this webinar What: The rapid growth in adoption of "Response to Intervention" across the nation's public schools, sparked in large measure by changes to IDEA's identification procedures for specific learning disabilities, is raising issues of compliance with IDEA's Child Find mandate.   Specifically, under IDEA (2004), school districts are no longer required to use a discrepancy model when determining eligibility, but instead, may use alternative means (e.g., response-to-intervention (RTI) or processing deficit approaches) to identify students. Consequently, significant variability among states in the SLD identification criteria now exists. The implementation of new criteria - particularly RTI - may result in delay or failure to properly identify students as eligible for IDEA services.   This Webinar will present the latest information on RTI adoption across states and the use of RTI for SLD identification. It will review recent challenges, including litigation, and provide guidance on an array of practical advocacy options that can be used to capitalize on the RTI process-to help struggling students regardless of whether they are suspected of having SLD-and deal with the delay or denial of access to special education potentially posed by RTI.  Time will be provided for questions from participants.     Training for school teams from schools which have already received basic RtI training through local, regional or state projects. At this training school teams will be using school wide data to assess the effectiveness of school intervention efforts. Using student outcome performance data as well as process evidence and indicators to determine the school's current status in implementing RtI. Using information to develop action steps for each participating school to enhance and improve their RtI implementation. To receive maximum benefit from this training, participants need to bring school wide benchmark data for at least the current school year and, if possible, prior years as well.
