    a. Laptops and mobile devices are ubiquitous in todays classrooms as students are digital natives. Because of decreasing prices of technology over the past few decades, an overwhelming majority of the university students surveyed own a laptop (87%). Because of this quick onset of technological adoption, culture has lagged, in terms of re-defining the social institutions that such mobile and computer technologies affect. According to this analysis, students feel that the use of a laptop helps in aiding studies, is useful for gathering course and supplementary materials and engaging in peer collaboration. Several challenges have been noted: communication based challenges, relating to social media, email and messaging services; and entertainment based challenges, relating to media consumption. These challenges serve as potential sources of distraction for the student using the technology and others. In their findings, 16% of students reported being distracted by pornography during class, on their own or others' computer screens, which ranked higher than computer games, at 1%. The authors conclude that the benefits of laptop use in class outweigh the challenges 2:1. Possibly, if the functionality of student laptops are integrated into course curriculum further, students can benefit from further peer collaboration, increased academic benefit and decreased distractions.

    I found this article extremely interesting as it made me view patents from a different perspective. I had always viewed patents as a means to benefit the inventor, but this article opened me to the extent to which large corporations and the legal profession can monetize from patents - at the cost of the inventor. Hopefully this move by Musk, a very prominent executive, continues to be noticed by other corporations.

    yes, i've been following Tesla patent narration for a while...as i'm into researching on energy & society issues. Sometimes i'm skeptical about applying open source to other realities than ITs as other interests, values and people are at work. Anyway we'll see if TESLA produce a critical mass for a revolution in the engine market... I like the P2P foundation by Michel Bauwens discussing on relevant issues and creating alternative scenarios

    A true pioneer, Mr Musk is. I think he has an extra sense for the future. Patents seem to be an institution which increasingly focuses on short term profit instead of the common benefit on the long run.

Cathy Davidson's Blog - 0 views

    I took a course taught by this professor on Coursera - The History and Future of (Mostly) Higher Education. Davidson contributed the Hacking the Academy, a source I posted elsewhere. Her blog is a great exploration of creativity in Higher Ed (or the lack thereof). The blog is on the HASTAC site - Humanities, Arts, Sciences, and Technology Alliance Collaboratory. LOTS going on there... I enjoy her blog because of the lively language and the provocations - at least they are provocative for so-called traditional schools.The recent blog post reviews a film about education The Ivory Tower; "...that the movie is strong and powerful on the problem, and a bit weak on solutions." Haven't seen it. Davidson puts in a plug for HASTAC: "HASTAC has been addressing the connection between equity and innovation since its founding in 2002." I'm digressing. This is not a critique of her particular blog post, just a suggestion that the blog is interesting and HASTAC site has lots on it that is relevant to the topics we're exploring in this course.

    Good source, this actually has been practice for several years, almost all the publishers are engaging into digitized open publishing type, wherein the resource materials they are selling is actually publish electronically, so that buyers or interested clients may view it online; no need to go to their shop to ask what they are looking for.

Sin embargo, me parece que su enfoque adolece de varios problemas. El más notorio es que trata al mundo de las publicaciones como uno solo, cuando no hay forma de comparar las dinámicas, capitales (humanos, financieros y simbólicos) puestos en juego en la publicación académica (scholarly publishing) o en los libros de interés general (trade), guías turísticas, enciclopedias, libros religiosos, textos para niños, etc., para no mencionar la abismal distancia entre las revistas académicas (scholarly journals) y los libros o inclusivo las revistas generalistas (magazines).     I agree with the reflection of this article about the need for publishers to rethink their business models and forget the exclusive Gutenberian publishing model. However, I think his approach suffers from several limitations. The most notorious is treating the publishing world as one, when there is no way to compare the dynamics, capital (human, financial and symbolic) at stake in academic or scholarly publishing with books of general interest (trade), tour guides, encyclopedias, religious books, textbooks for children, etc., not to mention the abysmal gap between scholarly journals and books or inclusive commercial magazines. Conclude that things are going wonderfully well because a lot of companies, linked to the mass media (an important point in the argument, mentioned as if it were the most normal thing in the world) have successful ventures is to confuse the things. I also believe that using the mantra of the age of disruption for all contributes little to a seroius discussion (http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/06/23/the-disruption-machine?currentPage = all)

    Good read, Kevin! :) I agree with this article that said "As long as people want to be informed, entertained, and inspired, there will be profitable opportunities in publishing." The main key to keep the business running is everyone must adapt. Traditional publishers need to moves to digital media in order to survive and meet the modern readers' needs.

Confronting global knowledge production inequities - 2 views

    This is about the inequitable global power and how it dynamics the confronting global knowledge production in nowadays.

    Underlying this notion of global knowledge production inequities is how developed countries "The Global North" dominate modern knowledge systems. This hegemonic control of global knowledge, driven by increased globalization, places pressure on virtually all societies to adopt global values and services. While this development does have positive implications (e.g. better understanding of modern health practices, nutrition, environmental protection, governance systems, etc), on the negative side, the imposition of cultural forms from the developing world could be considered a form of political and economic domination. This leads to the increasing homogenization of cultures and a threat to local knowledge, and the exacerbation of local differences and inequalities through uneven access to such knowledge and the means for it's application. The production of knowledge implicates and is implicated in power relations, as those with superior technology cannot only generate but also store, monopolize and disseminate information to safeguard their interests. Foucault (1972) suggests that the relationship between power and knowledge has its origin in the ownership of the means of material production and technical expertise. According to Said (1978), Western powers in a colonial and post-colonial context, using agents in developing countries, have been able to develop elaborate cultural and political institutions where knowledge production exists with supporting mechanisms that dominate and suppress African communities. In a critical examination of development policies and programs in Africa, Okolie (2003) considers these to be shaped by knowledge and assumptions about knowledge production that are primarily Euro-American centered, and are consequently "exclusionary and often contemptuous of other ways of knowing" (Okolie, 2003). The establishment of the continent's universities and research centers was primarily driven by Western powers, and the African elites who h

    Remember when the for profit university rose to a new prominence a decade or so ago, and everyone you knew flocked to the University of Phoenix to finish their degree and get a fabulous new job? I hope the MOOC doesn't turn into that. The hope was that it would enable those isolated by distance and means would elevate themselves thru their use. Sadly, according to findings by Forbes, it's mostly white, educated, employed American males taking them. I wonder which carries more weight with hiring managers--the MOOC-taker, or the traditional paying student?

    Two competing views on the future of publishing, and how shifts in consumer behavior to purchasing or consuming electronic content is causing such a shift in the literary world. I found it interesting to read that a number of open source software platforms were identified as the harbingers of today's self-publishing model online. I never knew Wattpad existed - watt an awesome site (pun intended). I agree with the articles viewpoint about the role that public libraries can play in this shifting landscape. A good read.
