Dealing with 'open access' demons - 1 views

  •
This article discusses the start of open access publications and the arguments against open access journals.
  •
Excellent and concise article, thank you for posting. I think this type of anonymous testing of open journals must continue to be applied to ensure standards are raised, and then consistently maintained. It also serves to call out frequent offending publications that may repeatedly demonstrate a lack of stringent review.

Suetzl, Stalder, Maier, Hug (Eds.): Cultures and Ethics of Sharing (2011) - 3 views

  •
This is an interdisciplinary open access publication on sharing after a conference being held in Innsbruck, Austria 2011. I would especially like to recommend the article by Katherine Sarikakis (Sharing, Labour and Governance on Social Media: A Rights Lacuna), who is dealing with invisible 'online labour' on SNS from a political economy perspective. Very interesting one, because, in my opinion, this also applies to open knowledge projects as well.. But also the other articles by Andrea Hemetsberger ('Let the Source be with you!' - Practices of Sharing in Free and Open-Source Communities), Volker Grassmuck (The Sharing Turn: Why we are generally nice and have a good chance to cooperate our way out of the mess we have gotten ourselves into), and the others (half of it in English, the other in German) are definitely worth reading!

As learning analytics become more and more widespread in higher education, it seems very important to outline the ethical aspect and the framework that has to be considered before talking about this trend.

Argumentation Step-By-Step: Learning Critical Thinking through Deliberate Practice - 3 views

  •
Rheingold's video this week got me to thinking about the critical thinking pedagogies that were used by my undergraduate professors. This article demonstrates an in depth glance on what critical thinking pedagogy can look like. While seemingly tangential to open access as a whole, I think Rheingold's discussion of literacies is rather important, and if open access is a successful movement it will need to be equipped with critical thinkers and actors.

DIGCOMP: A Framework for Developing and Understanding Digital Competence in Europe - 1 views

  •
In week 3 we've addressed how open knowledge can promote active citizenship. A pre-requisite for that is that individuals are equipped with the right set of digital skills. Being digital native does not necessarily imply that one is digital competent. The promotion of digital skills is at least as important as ensuring accessibility to technology. This document is a reference framework to identify what are the different elements of digital skills as these go much beyond than merely knowing how to use a computer. This has been developed by the European Commission, engaging several different stakeholders from several countries, and is being used as a support to strategies for the promotion of digital skills.

Opening the Curriculum: Open Educational Resources in U.S. Higher Education, 2014 - 0 views

  •
Just released. This is the result of a survey about the usage of OER in higher education. It gives insightful views on how OER are perceived within universities. It becomes thus a good support for those trying to implement an institutional strategy for OER. Best regards Ricardo Twitter @ricbruno71

Growing the curriculum: Open education resources in US higher education - 1 views

Frameworks for open educational resources - 2 views

  •
A significant movement in education concerns the use of open educational resources. By ―open‖ it is generally meant that the resource is available at no cost to others for adaptation and reuse in different contexts. However ―open‖ is not a simple dichotomy; rather, there is a continuum of openness. We discuss four separate aspects of reuse and demonstrate how these describe different levels of openness. We discuss how the licensing and technical aspects of open educational resources affect the relative openness of an OER.
