If you're taking this course out of Canada, the Copyright @ UBC website has a lot of really good information available to you. Guides specifically relevant to this course include the Creative Commons Guide (where you can find information about using CC licensed work, applying CC licenses to your own work, and several lists of websites where you can find CC licensed work) and the Public Domain Guide (where you can find information about how to determine if something is in the public domain in Canada). The entire site is CC BY-SA (except where otherwise indicated) though, so the entire thing is a resource for copyright questions in Canada.

Seen on Open Knowledge Foundation "Recently Brazilian government released the Kit de Dados Abertos (open data toolkit): The toolkit is made up of documents describing the process, methods and techniques for implementing an open data policy within an institution. Its goal is to both demystify the logic of opening up data and to share with public employees observed best practices that have emerged from a number of Brazilian government initiatives. The toolkit focuses on the Plano de Dados Abertos - PDA (Open Data Plan) as the guiding instrument where commitments, agenda and policy implementation cycles in the institution are registered. making it a state policy and not just a transitory governmental action. It is organizsd to facilitate the implementation of the main activities cycles that must be observed in an institution and provides links and manuals to assist in these activities. Emphasis is given to the actors/roles involved in each step and their responsibilities. Is also helps to define a central person to monitor and maintain the PDA. The Guide describes how to develop, implement and evaluate citizen science to study biodiversity and environment. The Guide is created for UK residents, however if you're interested in this subject I'm sure it's possible to find some useful tips.

Knowledge is becoming an increasingly recognised asset within business. But what exactly is it? This short animation guides you through the main terms you'll come across when discussing knowledge, including tacit knowledge, explicit knowledge, codification and diffusion.

Back to basics. In order to evolve knowledge, we have to re-ask ourselves what we think it is.

This video does a good explanation about the difference between data, information, and knowledge. In our class discussions, we talked about the differences too, which I never knew there were any. So data is just the facts of the world, information is capturing data within the context, and knowledge is what we know about plus our experiences.

This Full Sail University panel discusses how to successfully self-publish your own work, and how to do it without getting lost in the sea of all of the other content that's out there." A panel of successful self-published authors talk about the flexibility of new technology within the publishing realm to sell books/music: formatting your work, business models, copyright , print on demand options, music aggregators,, marketing, worldwide distribution, etc.

The video length of one+ hour might seem a bit daunting at first, but I ended up watching most of it in one go - this is really an excellent and easy-to-follow overview of all the important aspects of self-publishing. (I was especially pleased that this video listens to well in the background, as opposed to most other videos that I find require more "involvement" and that do not fit well with a busy day schedule.) What is best about this is that it is all based on actual people experiences - successful self-published authors participating in the panel, and sharing their knowledge & tips in real-time. I was especially curious to find out about the marketing side of of self-publishing a book, and was pleased to discover quite a few helpful ideas and tips. As someone who is thinking about self-publishing soon, this has answered a lot of questions and definitely sparked confidence in the process as a whole. Thank you very much for sharing! Hopefully, this will help and encourage many more self-publishers to be.
