Impact of Social Sciences - Public libraries play a central role in providing access to... - 3 views

  •
"Data connectivity is intrinsic to most of our daily lives. The place which exists in almost every community large or small, rural or urban, is the public library. Ben Lee argues that not only do libraries provide free access to data, but they do so in an environment which is trustworthy and neutral, geared to learning. Access to digital technology increasingly overlaps with access to opportunity and it is important to recognise the role public libraries already play (and have always played) in keeping the gate to knowledge open. Cybergogue: A Critique of Connectivism as a Learning Theory - 7 views

  •
"Having explored a "learning theory" that George Siemens (2005; 2006a) and Stephen Downes (2005; 2007) developed for a networked and digital world called connectivism. Fascinating and extensive conversations in the blogosphere and in educational journals debate whether connectivism is a new learning theory or whether it is merely a digital extension of constructivism."

I think the table in the end of the post is very useful to compare the 4 learning theories: Behaviorism Cognitivism Constructivism Connectivis

I agree, is a wonderful delineation.
  •
The article is great. I only have one observation, we always assume learning is all about connecting special nodes and sources of information but we forget that the opposite is also learning. When we disconnect our wrong nodes and sources of information in terms of beliefs and wrong information, I believe we are also learning.

How To Protect Your Ideas in the Digital Age (Seth Godin) - 4 views

  •
If we're in the idea business, how to protect those ideas? One way is to misuse trademark law. With the help of search engines, greedy lawyers who charge by the letter are busy sending claim letters to anyone who even comes close to using a word or phrase they believe their client 'owns'.
  •
"Focus on being the best tailor with the sharpest scissors, not the litigant who sues any tailor who deigns to use a pair of scissors." I am 100% behind this ending point. We live in a world where you are now challenged to create great ideas, not just sit on what you have. Keep striving! Woohoo!

50+ Web 2.0 Ways to Tell a Story - 2 views

  •
"Not long ago producing multimedia digital content required expensive equipment and deep levels of technical expertise. Now anyone can create, publish, and share compelling works with nothing more complex than a web browser. Open licensed media is easy to find/re-use, and combing that with our own content and a set of free tools, means we have powerful ways to express ideas beyond text and bullet points. "

The combination of the Vernier Video Physics and the Vernier Graphical Analysis apps works well to digitize and analyze simple video x,y coordinate data on the iPad. However, it is sometimes desirable to digitize more complex data (e.g., changes in the area of an object over time), and other apps work better in this regard.

Sirius XM Loses Royalties Case Against Oldies Band - 1 views

  •
Relating to the digital copyrights issue, here's a recent article regarding Satellite radio…in this day and age where new and old music is being played, it's become more confusing as to what rights music services (or other arts) have. They might be playing music that they may or may not have the right too (and yet bands have no idea). Unfortunately copyright laws seem to have a long way to go before they become untangled. In the battle between today's digital-music services and yesterday's oldies artists, score one for the geezers. The founders of the '60s rock band the Turtles won a summary judgment on Monday against Sirius XM Radio Inc., in a lawsuit alleging that the satellite-radio company violated California copyright law by playing the band's songs without permission.

How a Simple Spambot Became the Second Most Powerful Member of an Italian Social Network - 5 views

  •
"The surprising story of how an experiment to automate the creation of popularity and influence became successful beyond all expectation. Sometimes fascinating discoveries are made entirely by accident. This is a good example." This article shows how digital identify can be constructed and manipulated, leading to questions around authenticity. How many of us would have also been fooled by that Spambot? This example also reinforces why information literacy is now one of the most essential skills for the 21st century.

Why we can't quit the cloud, even if we're scared of it - The Globe and Mail - 3 views

  •
"As a result, it's not so simple to say that we shouldn't trust the cloud anymore, and that whatever happens to us is our fault if we do. It's an argument ignorant of the online-only reality consumer technology is hurtling toward more and more every day. Already, the cloud is the primary data store for a lot of people, for better or worse. Is it really so unreasonable to expect that the privacy, security and protection of our data should keep pace?"
