    The first time I heard of Diego's case, I couldn't believe it and yet it was shared by the EFF, an authoritative source. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that someone would want to sue over the sharing of his thesis. I didn't even thought you could have copyright on a thesis and how do you even make money on a thesis? Especially when it is said that a large majority of all thesis are never looked up more than twice (by the author and the director). This person should be ashamed.

    This list is not to be taken at face value (many of the publishers on it do have legitimate journals), but it serves as a reminder that there are many predatory journals that ask scholars to pay a lot of money to share their work, and many that also skirt traditional peer review processes in order to get money from unwary authors.

    while the list is not provided as an evidence based indicator of relative credibility, Beall's site and blog do give quite a bit of 'food for thought'. There are certainly a number of dodgy publications, and like many I have been bombarded by invitations to publish, act as a guest editor etc. If you dont work for an organisation willing to pay the cost for open access publishing, it is an expensive option for individuals. There needs to be a clearer means of determining relevance and credibility of material at times.

    Great resource! I think this conceptualization meshes really nicely with the "IT'S NOT INFORMATION OVERLOAD. IT'S FILTER FAILURE" video, where Shirky discusses how we need to move beyond the idea of "information overload". I find that I, and many of the people around me, often set up deliberate practices to try and mediate the amount of information that we receive. The word "infotention" is new to me, and captures this practice nicely. For example, some of the practices that I use in my day to day life include: -- I always keep my phone on silent. *Always*. -- I use an RSS reader to stay on top of blogs and other information, including mailing lists which I have rerouted from my email inbox to my RSS reader (I use feedly). -- I use an email filter called "unrollme" which sends me a daily digest of email that isn't important but that I might want to see. Do you find that there are "infotention" practices you use in your day to day life? What about "mindful infotention", as the author describes?

    RE: the multimedia editing activity. Paint.NET is free simple image editing program. It has more advanced features than windows paint, but less than a full editor like GIMP. Thus, you can use it to do some quick high quality editing when you don't want to mess around with a full editor. It is also interesting in terms of Open source, since it started as open source, but is no longer open source, because the author felt there was problems with plagiarism...

    The issue of copyright has always been a contentious issue long before the introduction of MOOCs. The debate, now that we have MOOCs in our midst will continue as we try to find a common ground. The issue on the table is fair play.

    Beware of "openwash". Whenever a term becomes so popular, it is important to clarify the definition and scope of the author/speaker/presenter.

    An alternative opinion on openness, I agree. Openness may evoke different feelings to people who have the "closed" experience. It may be also people's disbelief in the buzz-words and buzz-trends which come and go.

    I agree with the danger of Openness. Not everything should have open access. What happens with the pages that show people how to make guns or bombs? I think certain pages should not only be dismissed but also closed.

    So true ibudule. Is 'openness' to become another catch-prase and trend as 'green', 'robust debate', 'politically correct' terms for almost anything? The deeper significance of the concept can be undermined by it becoming the last trendy issue which is applied to almost anything and everything.

    So true, not everything should be open, but it is getting hard in our world, where everyone addicted to technologies. Technological dependence is becoming a huge issue. For example, leaked Snapchat images are all over the internet, and 50% of users are teen in the age of 13 to 17 years old. And nowadays, most of pics aren't images of dogs, cats or weekend dinner, they are images of naked people. If its open, then there is no privacy.

    I actually remember reading this article last year. It's quite frightening how these new methods of production have the potential to do a great deal of harm. Personally, I believe such "openness" can lead to subversion but that the benefits outweigh the risks.

    Morozov is right to bash "openwashing". But he is wrong in his Statement on "open-source". He writes "While Popper's openness is primarily about politics and a free flow of ideas, open-source is about cooperation, innovation and Efficiency" - well if we look at the core and origin of "open source", we have to look at "free Software" and its definition given by the "Inventor" of "free and open source Software", Richard Stallman. And we will see, that Stallman has a robust and transparent agenda of "free flow of ideas", very liberal, very Popper-like.     Thanks for sharing this well presented write up. Big question put forth is are we really getting the outcomes expected from the open society. Open vs. quality is a big issue. At times restricting access helps a great deal.

    Peter Downes wrote this blog criticizing the Cape Town Declaration. It was very interesting reading in terms of looking at the issues from different perspectives. I did not agree on everything he wrote, but the following paragraph was resonated in my mind as I read it. I DID , however add a word - in parenthesis. "If there is anything that could be thought of as a truism in contemporary education, it is the idea that we are all learners and that we are all teachers. The idea of lifelong learning makes explicit the former idea, and the principles of learner-centered, constructive and inquiry-based learning make explicit the latter. Knowledge - particularly social and public knowledge - is not something that is (only) produced by a hothouse meeting of experts, but rather, is produced through a process of dialogue and conversation".

    The fact is someone had to initiate and ask for comments. The door might not have been widened enough as the author comments. It is perhaps time to understand that in as much as we would like to live in an open world, our views will always diverging to a number of directions.
