Ms Kasian-Lew's article have a balanced view on the general fear about online privacy. We have no real choice but sharing in our digital world. I think we should learn to be aware of sharing and learn to live with a level publicity. I see it as a process of growing more conscious about our activities and the consequences. On the other hand we need to defend ourselves against the ill use of our shared information. We should inspire and support laws against it. And we might share good and bad examples and use the power of sharing. She is right awareness is fine, fear does not help.

It's a trailer for Defcad.com, a search engine for 3D-printable designs for things "institutions and industries have an interest in keeping from us," including "medical devices, drugs, goods, guns."

I've read in Japanese paper that Ricoh and Canon started producing and announced 3D printers. The market has been expanding. It used such as a design of dental work etc. I don't think it's matter of that "open source" is winning or not. It's been and will continue to utilize, but how to use it could be changing. Maybe more creative way, people may need to be smarter about how to analyze to SELECT right source before analyze the source of data, etc..

Interesting article but he couldn't really develop a cogent argument in a op-ed. However, "open is the new green" could be true. That's why I want to learn about 'open' now so I can be ahead and stay ahead of what happens to 'open' when it gets reduced, like 'the environment' did to 'green'.

Open Access also opens up a much wider ability to adopt other forms of information transmission than print. The embedding of the videos into this MOOC is a case in point. As librarians, we are then challenged to ensure that our intermediation, whether through Information Literacy training or direct reference assistance, takes into account the growing need of users to be able to make sense of all forms of communication. San Francisco - Computer security firm Symantec on Monday said it uncovered stealthy software wielded as part of a years-long spying campaign, most likely by a nation state. It's common knowledge that the amount of online rich media consumption is increasing exponentially on an annual basis. But how much video traffic is projected over the next five years? And what does this growth really mean for global residential, business, and mobile subscribers and the service providers that support them? I have used this infographic many times since I have found it. There are times in presentations or when trying to educate people on the size and scope of the internet that words do not do enough. The pictures and numbers and scaling provided by this infographic conveys the message quite well even if the numbers are losing their meaning because they are so large. The other important part of this infographic is that is is updated constantly. When I first found this link it was referring to the year 2014, as of this post it is now referencing 2015 and what will be available on line at that time.

So glad you posted this! I want to share it on every social media platform I have. So many people I know have a hard time distinguishing legitimate sources of information from illegitimate ones - mainly because so many sites look polished, professional, and have well-written (if ill-informed) pieces. I find it difficult to tell sometimes as well, and if unsure I just look for another source of information. Thank you!

I think this is a beautifully simple and clear wonderful explanation of why open education matters! I like how it discusses the conflict that exists without too much judgement and explains some of the open jargon such as OER. Thank you for sharing.

A good supplement to Module 10's core reading on ACRL's standards for information literacy for higher education, this 5-pager is a short article for middle and high school librarians and parents.

I agree that students need to have some background knowledge about the topic they research on internet. And then they may do qualitative research. I wouldn't speak about positive/negative search results, I would rather speak about true/false results.

As a student, I think I learn to filter out what is valid and invalid. Depending on the source, and the crediblity, and the references it uses, i think will help individuals fitler out what is true or not .

I've found some of these tools to be helpful in designing interaction online - particularly useful as we discuss collaboration and filtering.

I love the idea that progress and science being based on communication. Often the idea that I have in my mind is a scientist working alone, and that is never truly how the great break-throughs come, but rather from building on the science that we have learned about previously. I still have a problem with the Author Pay part of Open Access publishing, and it seems like it is not actually "Open" if you have to pay to play. The Utopic Version is really the way that I think of "Open" publishing even with all the pit falls of finding the Utopia. I like the rebirth by giving the onus to the reader to review, and that is a model that works as seen by Wikipedia, because people are willing to aid progress with out conventional compensation. I understand all of the problems with this, but I love the possibility.

This can help provide insight into a domain's history and additional information.

whois.com is interesting because it allows individuals who otherwise would be afforded privacy to be reachable. This has a connected learning aspect to it, because now you can find the creators of websites and reach out to them - this is something I have done in the past. However, websites such as GoDaddy allow for one to purchase privacy, which blocks the whois lookup service. I believe this is ethical however because websites are not inherently social media, and anonymity should be a choice.
