Jazz in America is an all encompassing Jazz education website. It offers everything from what jazz is and how it began to lesson plans that examine characteristics of all different jazz styles. The website discusses important performers and composers. It also looks at how jazz evolved. Audio and visual examples are provided. Assessments are also provided in this website.

BrainPOP is a great site for video lessons on music. The videos are very basic in design with the elementary level in mind, but could be of good use for any introductory music course.

League of American Orchestras is a site for educators, professional musicians and students can explore. Teachers can look at advocacy and the government to find out what is happening in legislation. There is a career center for teachers and professional musicians who are looking to perform. Everyone can learn about Learning and Leadership development of students and teachers. The Knowledge, Research and Innovation tab is great as it is the latest research happening. You can also find conferences, meetings, journals, conducting, composing and performing tab.

This site is a great resource for orchestra teachers. The purpose of this resource is to provide information about the current state of music programs and opportunities for orchestral students. The content of this site is mainly articles and registration links for different conferences. There are also links to webinars, fellowships, etc. as well as current issues revolving around orchestral music/education. Some sources particularly helpful for teachers are a link with interesting facts about orchestra and articles about how to reach out to bigger audiences. It offers a subscription for "Symphony" Magazine and provdes information about composing, conducting, and performing, all major elements or any music education program.

Amazing resource for lesson plans, worksheets, and games to teach students about a wide variety of music topics. This website would be great for creating lesson plans for subs and would also be a great resource if you can't find printed worksheets that address theory. The games are also fun and educational, asking students to identify instruments, tempos, etc. and can act as quizzes that can be scored and printed out. Great resource!

Music Tech Teacher is an open resource offered by Karen Garrett as an extension of her own music classes she had previously been teaching. Ms. Garrett offers free lessons, worksheets and assessments that can be downloaded as .pdfs and used by any teachers looking for materials that could be used within their own classrooms. Ms. Garrett's resources also have a strong focus on teachers looking to specifically make use of technology in their classes.

Best Practices for Children's Choir is a podcast with Matthew Parker discussing his best practices when working with a children's choir. The discussion content ranges from choosing music to engaging in warm-ups. Matthew also shares his favorite octavos, composers/arrangers, warm-ups, and tips when choosing music. This is very useful information and a great resource to use when working with your elementary and/or middle school choir.

This is the Dallas Symphony's kids page. They have great videos and resources about the instruments of the orchestra and composers. There are lesson plans available as well. This is probably geared more toward younger students.

Launchpad Arcade is a great tool to introduce students to composing music. It has a variety of sounds and loops, and allows for a lot of artistic freedom. Using this for a composition could allow for as much or as little structure as you wish.

This YouTube video gives excellent but brief instruction on the topic of tone color or timbre. What is tone color? The presentation uses several instruments to illustrate what timbre is and how composers might use this musical element to evoke a mood or paint a musical picture.

This interactive guide by composer Abbie Betinis goes through a step-by-step question guide that allows conductors to answer questions about how they want to perform and/or reproduce music. The guide then explains the appropriate licenses needed to ensure the copyright holder is fairly treated. It also tells you how to obtain these licenses.

This Google Doc is a collection of band music that members of the Facebook Band Director's Group have curated. To add a piece to the list, teachers must have taught it twice and deemed it to be a worthy piece of repertoire. Since this is in the format of a Google Doc, it is easily sortable by grade or composer.

There is a large selection, and CPDL offers useful search features such as listing all musical settings of a text, searching by language, type of piece, and by musical era. Other information: This is a good resource for directors who do not have large music budgets, are looking to find different settings of specific texts, or are looking for music from a specific time period.

A great article showing how to take a well known tune and teach students how to compose their own melody. The article goes through the process of how to teach it. First you help students to write a base line, have them improvise a rhythm, then they can discover the notes of each chord, and write their own melody using chord tones.
