Pre-reading (shared), including "standard" texts - here including Nancy Kline and Chris Argyris. Clarity of purpose "just why are we here?". Shared purpose "we're all here for the same things". Folks tweeting and googling continuously during the workshop. Amanuensis / cybrarian to facilitate shared learning in the workshops. Democratic agenda-setting. Mutual exploration of topics. Active curiosity. "Essentiality" - avoidance of rabbit-holes and extraneous discussion of details. Focus on impacts (as compared to busyness, or outputs, or even outcomes). Post-reading - following up new references. Follow-up conversations, actions. Feedback. - Bob Afterword In writing this story, it seemed to me that a video of a workshop in action would be a great addition to the resources available to BaCo staff to help them appreciate the nature of an effective workshop.     In this blog post, John Hagel "lifts" from a much larger report, what platforms are, the three types (aggregation that is mainly short-term, transaction based; social for building long-term relationships and meshing of relationship networks to foster diversity of connections, and mobilization--those that move people to act together to accomplish something, ex. supply network, Linux in open source, and social movements such as Arab Spring), and how a fourth one--the "learning platform" is the aspiration of business ecosystems everywhere. Without Taylor to act as a buffer, sifting through questions and writing up replies as they were originally stated, it's easy to imagine AMAs in which PR teams can cherry-pick questions and mete out bland responses.

  • As much as Victoria is loved, this reaction is not all a result of her departure: there is a feeling among many of the moderators of reddit that the admins do not respect the work that is put in by the thousands of unpaid volunteers who maintain the communities of the 9,656 active subreddits, which they feel is expressed by, among other things, the lack of communication between them and the admins, and their disregard of the thousands of mods who keep reddit's communities going.

    Interesting article on how Reddit fired a popular staff person who facilitated the AMA (Ask Me Anything) guests going into different subreddit communities without notifying volunteer moderators of these communities ahead of time. Volunteer moderators closed their communities except to passworded members to show their unhappiness with Reddit executives' lack of early communication, etc. by Rich McCormick, July 2, 2015. Communities reopened within a couple of days.

  • beyond ~40–50 hours per week, the marginal returns from additional work decrease rapidly and quickly become negative. We have also demonstrated that though you can get more output for a few weeks during “crunch time” you still ultimately pay for it later when people inevitably need to recover.
  • My intellectual conclusion is that these companies are both destroying the personal lives of their employees and getting nothing in return.
  • This kind of attitude not only hurts young workers who are willing to “step up” to the expectation, but facilitates ageism and sexism by indirectly discriminating against people who cannot maintain that kind of schedule.

Make Cycles - CLMOOC 2015 - 0 views

  • On Monday, Make Cycle leaders will publish a Newsletter announcing the theme of the cycle and sharing some related ideas and resources. Make Cycle leaders will then plan and facilitate a Make with Me live broadcast event on Tuesday evening which will be archived for later viewing. Make Cycle leaders will host a Twitter chat on Thursday evening to support reflection and discussion. All chats will also be archived.
