Bob Marshall on what an effective group workshop looks like--September 30, 2014, quite demanding yet doable. he above story illustrates a range of features of an effective workshop: Certain shared proficiencies in e.g. Skilled Dialogue, Lean Coffee, etc.. Pre-reading (shared), including "standard" texts - here including Nancy Kline and Chris Argyris. Clarity of purpose "just why are we here?". Shared purpose "we're all here for the same things". Folks tweeting and googling continuously during the workshop. Amanuensis / cybrarian to facilitate shared learning in the workshops. Democratic agenda-setting. Mutual exploration of topics. Active curiosity. "Essentiality" - avoidance of rabbit-holes and extraneous discussion of details. Focus on impacts (as compared to busyness, or outputs, or even outcomes). Post-reading - following up new references. Follow-up conversations, actions. Feedback. - Bob Afterword In writing this story, it seemed to me that a video of a workshop in action would be a great addition to the resources available to BaCo staff to help them appreciate the nature of an effective workshop. "Still, badges are probably more valuable to professors than are the paper certificates that Kent State traditionally gave to those who completed training workshops in the past. "It's an easy way for a professor to show that I'm that type of faculty member that goes and does faculty development," said Ms. Kelly."

Upcoming workshop by Jane Bozarth on working out loud, December 19, 2014, online. When you ask, What does learning look like? no one answers, Someone talking in front of a room. We learn by doing, and by telling what we're doing, and by watching others do things, and by showing others how we did something. Narrating work can solve so many problems for both organizations and individuals, from capturing tacit knowledge, to easing transitions when workers depart, to reducing duplication of effort, to further enabling informal and social learning. Very important website for identifying most popular learning tools, compiled by the Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies at the end of 2012, Jane Hart et al. Jane runs the Centre and is a member of the Internet Time Alliance and the Social Learning Centre that is offering the PKM workshop that Lisa and I are enrolled in. This is a very valuable resource that should affect our Digital Literacy Foundations Workshop design and should show up someplace on our site--perhaps in the blog?

Interesting blog post by Jennifer Dunn on Scoop.it, June 25, 2013. It suggests using LinkedIn, conferences, and current contacts as starting points for building your business network. Not so unusual but the point about how you don't have to go a conference to benefit from the circle of like-minded peers it attracts but go to the website or Facebook page or Twitter to circulate and get acquainted with the people who might be valuable for you to know is a good one. Makes me think, also, about how wikis or any record building device given to participants one year at a conference or workshop might be left open for one to go back and view current participants. (ex. BEtreat wiki is still open to me; WLstudio?)

Preoccupations feature by Peggy Klaus, August 14, 2016, speaks to whether women-only conferences, corporate workshops, and networking soirees (single-sex type events) enable women to move up in the workplace. May be an overreliance in some corporations.
