    I thought this was a great article! It gives wonderful advice on how to correct the mistakes that are made with iPads in schools. This would definitely be a great resource for teachers to use to gauge how they are using iPads within their own classrooms and to remember how to keep iPad use effective and meaningful. Great find! :)

    This is an excellent article to forward onto your administrators (as I just did!) so that they can understand the common pitfalls for technology use in the classroom. In my building, we have a classroom set of iPads that can be checked out and they have been used for all kinds of assignments and subject areas. As the kids will report, some teachers know how to use them effectively, and others are just using them for the sake of doing it. I've also read a couple of articles that I'll have to try and come back and link, but a few very large school districts have been in the news for the issues that they've been having with iPads in the classroom. The issue seemed to be that they scaled their programs way too quickly, did not train their educators properly, and did not look at the liability piece that comes along with giving students access to certain apps and features.

    Nicole, this is an awesome article. I like how it shows the 5 mistakes and ways to correct those. I think this article would be great for teachers as some are unaware of how to use iPads or how to use them for the right reason. I feel like if you have the right apps on the iPad for the correct age group they can be very educational. Personally, young kids are learning to work this and enjoy doing this. I had a boy I nannied he loved playing on the iPad at age 4! He was allowed to play educational games and have books read to him, etc.

    Nichol, I definitely agree with the things this article is saying! I think the fact the lack of Teacher Preparation in Classroom Management of iPads is a big one. How are we suppose to be incorporating this technology when we don't even know how to use it ourselves? Many people assume it works like a laptop when it does not. I definitely think this is an article teachers should read before trying to bring ipads into the classroom! Great article!

    With so many articles on 'what you should do' it's a nice change of pace to see 'what your doing wrong' kind of article. I went into it thinking it was going show how students are misusing ipads, so I especially liked how it was aimed towards educators telling them how they are going to misuse them. I see a lot of what we've read for class already in this article, it helps reinforce the lessons.

    I agree with this article and its must be obvious to anyone who has used an iPad why this information is important. The iPad is a tool and is effective for certain types of task. It's not a replacement for a computer. Due to the low cost and ease of operation the wow factor could cause someone to lose sight of the purpose of application. This article is more important for the designer of curriculum and the teacher who have input. One recently large lawsuit resulted from a one billion dollar purchase of iPad for a California school district.

    1. I could see myself using something like this with a future class. Right now, its all about access, access, access! (and I don't always have it) If I add this, I want to be able to do it more than a day or two every other week... 2. The resource is mostly for teacher use...it considers issues a teacher might want to consider before implementing coding in their curriculum, along with support issues they might need help with later. 3. There are other resources out there for teachers -- I have looked at code.org (for example) as they provide a lot of lesson plans/etc. that can be used by teachers in their classrooms.

    While I don't think I would used in my future classrooms per say. I am however interested in learning to code for myself. Also, having a 1st grader and a preschooler, I think this would be helpful to start teaching them to code. This resource is mainly for teacher use, but the curriculums listed on this site would be used by students. Another resource I have heard about through a coder friend is DeltaVCode 101 course. I know they are offering a class starting soon in CR very soon.

    This will be a helpful tool for me to use in my ELP classrooms. I have found that coding is an area of both interest and strength for many of my students. I have found that some like to stick with the apps and resources that they are comfortable with and others like to try new things. This will help me offer those students what they need.

    The information in this article supports one of the things that my school tech integrationist is trying to get teachers to do with social media. He is asking teachers to do Penpal Schools, which will connect students with other students from around the world. I am going to be having my class do Penpal schools. I also want to try out having my students blog about books we are reading in 7th grade language arts after reading about the benefits of blogging in this article.

    How is your school liking PenPals Schools? I started using it in my classroom but found it to be too time consuming and the questions were a bit overwhelming in the project that we chose. My students were also not getting responses in the way that I expected them to. A lot of them were just getting a lot of "hi" from their Pen pals instead of anything useful.

    Very cool! I really wish I had students at an older age level. Though I can do something like this for 2nd graders it is more difficult with their reading and writing skill levels. Still a pretty cool tool to use for students and teachers alike. Thank you for sharing!

    Social Media is important. When I was in middle school and high school we didn't learn about social media or how to be safe on the internet. It was more of a foot note than a subject in class that we learned about. Blogging was foreign to me until now. I feel like I have missed a lot because of this.

This is a factor of self-leadership where the individual makes choices that can increase their ability to engage on topics in the classroom. This is of course only one choice in the plethora of available online learning resources. One alternative is the ROCC or Regional Online Collaborative Courses.

    Ping, in our last meeting you brought this to our attention. My stepdaughter is moving from Kazakhstan (KZ) to live with us in Iowa. She is a native Russian language speaker and has studied English. KZ has a K11 system. I hoped that she would be able to attend the 12th grade here in Iowa. This summer I discovered that if a student graduated from a foreign high school they are not entitled to FAPE. She graduated from the KZ system this past spring at 17 years old. Now that we know about these online K12 courses we have a new avenue of opportunity to help her prepare for college.

    This website seems great and definitely something that I would use in the classroom. I think making video lessons and using old lessons will really spice up learning and make everything clearly visible. It seems like this website can be used both by students and teachers evenly. Teachers can make them and students can use them (Students can create for projects as well). SchoolTube is similar but could maybe used as a reflection to the lessons on here.

    Videos are such an important part of digital learning and this is another tool to bring them into education without simply just passing the link out to a class. The teacher can tie in specific questions, notes, and resources. This really expands the use of the video and lends it towards 24/7 learning and the ability for students to control their own pace of the lesson. Along with this tool, I recommend VidoeNot.es and Educanon.

    Nikki, I have this same page bookmarked on my Diigo, so I definitely find it very useful and inspiring. I think Ted talks are a great resource that we can use for our students! They have so many different Ted talks on very different issues, and being able to watch a video for a quick 15 minutes can catch the attention of the students. I also feel as though the Ted talks I have watched have been very inspirational and done very well! I would definitely be able to effectively use these resources in my future classroom. I believe this resources if for teachers to use and share good Ted Talks, but then those teachers are expected to share with their students. I would recommend following Ted Talks so you can see when they post new and similar videos.

    I thought this was a useful resource for the introduction of using social media in the classroom being straight forward with the pros and cons. I think this resource would be useful if it were linked with a website that explained how to combat the cons that are pointed out in this article. For example, how can we take the cyber bullying issue and turn it into a learning opportunity in the classroom. I believe this resource should be used to help teachers decide if they want to utilize social media in the classroom. I am aware of multiple resources that point out the pros and cons in social media.

Social Media Has Changed Our Language | Language Arts Classroom - 1 views

  • Language always changes. Scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, anyone can notice this change. That’s not a negative, and it’s worth noting with our students. They use social media, and the discussion can fit into an ELA class.
  • Here are new words or definitions for words that I would argue came about because of social media. “Verses” as a verb. As in, our soccer team is verses Washington tonight.  “Couponing.” (My spell check highlighted this). The rise of reality television coupon and money saving shows gave us “couponing.” Couponing is a sport for certain people at the grocery store. “Adulting.” Students may not use this word often, but their parents might. (And again – spell check highlighted this). I adulted hard this weekend; I cleaned the house and went grocery shopping.  “Hashtagging.” Formerly known as the pound sign, the hashtag provides categories of messages. Are you hashtagging the awards show tonight? The hashtag often leads to… tags… “Tagging.” Not your clothing, but rather your friends. Will you tag me in your status? “Fail.” Normally present in, #epicfail. “Fail” was once a grade or effort, but now it has replaced “not doing well.” I am failing at life today.

    I plan to discuss with my 6th grade language arts students how social media has changed our language. I can use this as part of the digital literacy lessons that I plan to do this year and am currently working on creating.

    Hi Trina, This article really peaked my interest as I've seen similar behaviors with my students. I think it is especially prevalent with secondary students as they are probably the most invested in social media platforms. I think that this could transition into a great digital literacy lesson talking about the difference between "internet speak" and proper grammar. I would love to see what you come up with based on this topic!

    I found this article extremely relevant and something to definitely be shared with students and teachers. It could definitely cause issues in the classroom, but language is always changing so the classroom language will evolve with it. Something to keep in mind with my future classroom!
