After Starbucks Deal, Square Now Powers Point Of Sale And Mobile Payments For Boutique ... - 0 views

  • According to a release, customers will initially be able to pay with Square Wallet at Blue Bottle’s Oakland, Brooklyn, and San Francisco Mint Plaza locations, with the company rolling out Square to its remaining stores in the coming months.
  • Blue Bottle will use Square Register as its full point-of-sale system (Starbucks does not use Square Register) to accept cash and credit card payments, track inventory, and monitor daily reports. Customers will also be able to use Square Wallet to make purchases just by saying their names.
  • While Blue Bottle is certainly not at the same scale as Starbucks, small to mid size chains still represent a huge opportunity for Square. A number of small, regional chains are using Square Register and payments including, Pitango Gelato in DC and Baltimore (5 locations), Cafe Grumpy in NYC (4 locations) Amy’s Ice Cream (13 locations) and Cartel Coffee Lab in Phoenix and Tucson (5 locations).

  • As part of the Starbucks deal, 7,000 Starbucks stores in the U.S. accept Square Wallet, and Square readers are also sold at company-owned Starbucks stores. Square also began selling its readers at Verizon stores a few weeks ago, bringing its total number of retail locations where the payments dongle is sold to 30,000.
  • Starting with a free credit card reader for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, Square Reader allows anyone to accept credit cards anywhere, anytime, for a low transaction rate of 2.75 percent per swipe, with no hidden fees. Square Register serves as a full point-of-sale system for businesses to accept payments, manage items, and share menu and location information.
  •
I myself have a Square and swear by it. I use it to sell homemade goods and trinkets and fairs, as well as sell baked goods at fundraising events. The Square app and unit are free (after registry refund) and are simple to use. Just connect it to a bank account and you are off. You can take and keep track of both cash and credit card payments. Plus inventory tracking is easy. The Square turns any iPad, iPhone, iPod or android device into a traveling POS system. Plus there is no paper involved so it's a great first step to running a Green business. Square is the POS solution for small businesses.

Square Integrates With Caviar, Launches New Restaurant Point-Of-Sale - 1 views

  • Now payments company Square, which owns delivery service Caviar, has put together what it hopes will be the painkiller product that restaurants have been craving: a dedicated point-of-sale system and corresponding software for full-service and quick-service restaurants that integrates offline and online sales.
  • Square for Restaurants aims to appeal to both mom-and-pop businesses and, over time, to chains.
  • But convincing multi-location businesses to adopt a new payments system is a tall order, because of the associated switching costs.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Square for Restaurants will cost $60 per month for a first POS, plus $40 per month for each additional set-up. For payments processing, Square will charge 2.6% plus 10 cents for each transaction. Bulk pricing will come at a discount.
  •
Square has created a new point of sale system and corresponding software that integrates offline and online sales. With many restaurants turning to delivery for additional revenue, trying to manage both to go and dine in orders has resulted in headaches over a variety in hardware. After releasing Square for Retail, Square has now shifted it's focus to restaurants. "Every restaurant is becoming an omnichannel business," says Gokul Rajaram, Caviar lead at Square. For the first time, he says, restaurants "will have a unified view of their sales and their customers, and be able to understand how each channel contributes to their overall business." One of there largest hurdles will be the price associated with switching costs. As a General Manager, I can see the need for this software that will mainstream all of these channels into one. Currently at my restaurant, we have partnered with three different third party delivery services as we look to find revenue outside of our four walls, one of those companies being Caviar. This has led to our host desk being bombarded with three different tablets, and hourly employees being responsible to manage them from accepting orders to then entering them into our POS system. This is not only time consuming and inefficient, but also costly.

Plate IQ has formed a partnership with Square announcing an integration with Square's new Restaurant service. Plate IQ's daily dales software enables restaurants to "automatically input guest payment data from Square for Restaurants into many existing accounting software platforms and create valuable summaries of daily transactions." This integration has multiple benefits including more accurate, faster and detailed bookkeeping and more efficient cost of goods sold management. At my restaurant, we use a very similar software to this called Avero. Avero is integrated with our Aloha POS system and the information is automatically inputted every morning from the day before. As a General Manager, I find software like this necessary to day to day operations. It enables me to generate reports on product mixes, individual server sales, categorical sales and even enables me to monitor labor compared to my revenue.

Eventbrite Launches iPad Credit-Card Reader At The Door: A Lost Opport - 1 views

  •
Eventbrite has introduced an iPad credit-card swiping feature that allows merchants to sell on-site tickets, merchandise, drinks and more. The company charges a $0.99 processing fee and each ticket sold takes a 2.5 per cent cut. Eventbrite issued its 50 millionth ticket last month which matches the company raised last May's $50 million in VC funding.

Eventbrite, a leading event ticketing organization, has launched a set of hardware in 2012 following its competitors. It focuses on gaining insight in attendee information and offer one holistic picture of the full performance of an event. So Eventbrite knows that adopting Square as a solution does not gives them what expected due to the unopen API. Arguably, establishing their own software gains more comparing to adopting Square, but they are still being "technology agnostic" and waiting for Square to open the API and work with Square.

Can Square Change POS Forever? - 0 views

  •
"A standard POS and credit card system would have set me back about $5,000-$10,000," says Adam Schneider, owner of Little Muenster. "But, like a lot of people, I already had an iPad." Schneider downloaded Square Register, bought a receipt printer, and was in business for a few hundred dollars. He says a major selling point was Square's portability-Little Muenster is a popular vendor at NYC foodie festivals throughout the year-and the swipe fee. The existing credit card system is obscure, because the fees are not upfront or fixed. The amount that flows into a merchant's account after a transaction depends on the brand of card, the issuing bank, and the rates set by an outside merchant processor, and the money may take five to 10 days to process. Square threw the circuitous accounting equation out the window. The flat 2.75 percent fee and the rest goes into a merchant's account the next day. Convenience with quick service solution at ease.

In the United States, hotels represent more than 5 billion square feet of space, nealry 5 million guest rooms and approxiamtely $4 billion in annual energy use. As of January 2010, there were only 40 hotels that were LEED certified. The acronym LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED is a voluntary, third party green building certification program that awards points to buildings depending on their sustainable practice being implemented which includes building improvements, environemntal footprint and water and energy use. LEED was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization. Its main purpose is to provide building owners and operators with a basic framework for developing and implementing sustainable practices. The first hotel to ever be certified according to LEED criteria was the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro, NC. This hote received Platnium status for being able to recycle 87% of its construction debris, purchasing 40% of the building materials and 90% of its furniture locally. Installation of 100 solar panels, use of geothermal energy for the restaurant's refrigeration equipment and instllation of a Regenerative Drive model for its elevators made the Proximity Hotel a benchmark hotel. There are several practices that can make a hotel conserve energy and make it sustainable such as using flourescent lightbulbs, offering linen and towel reuse programs, paving parkig lots with highly reflective materials or open grid pavers, installing high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, landscaping with native plants and using local materials and goods. These will not necessarily lead to LEED certification but will definitely earn points towards obtaining that accredidation. The use of sustainable practices not only helps conserve the environment but also saves money in the long run. Through water conservation techniques, recycling and linen and towel reuse programs, the hospitality industry wins two-fold,

iPad, Tablet Point-of-Sale Systems Gain Popularity - 1 views

  • An iPad looks modern and sleek, the device’s mobility gives a merchant greater flexibility in serving customers, and the cash-register software available for a tablet costs considerably less.
  •
In this article, mobile POS systems are discussed. Popularity of these devices such as iPad and other tablets are constantly growing. Point of sale computers can cost upwards of $20,000 which is a pretty penny for a restaurant. If restaurants were to switch to tablets and mobile POS systems, the cost wouldn't be the only benefit. With the iPads and tablets, owners and managers can track how many guests enter the restaurant on a daily basis. Inventory is kept up-to-date and is easily accessible for corporations. An interesting point made in the article is "In the same way that some customers continue to write checks in an age of online banking, some merchants will continue to use the older point-of-sale systems out of habit." The times are changing and technology is improving every day. The mobile POS systems allow for small businesses especially to use the money saved for something that can benefit the restaurant- perhaps new equipment for the kitchen. This article describes a program that PayPal recently began to offer. PayPal agreed " to waive transaction fees for the remainder of the year if a business replaces its cash register with an iPad operating PayPal's free mobile-payment technology." The top three tablet POS systems are Groupon, Square and NCR. Each of these have their pros and cons, but over all, they are significantly less expensive than the only bulky POS system.
  •
Being a technology kid it is interesting to see how things use to be even just a few short years ago. The different 10 years can make in the POS systems restaurants use is a huge. As times continue to change, most restaurants will be going from POS terminals to POS tablets. Changing to tablets is much more cost effective especially for smaller businesses that need to save wherever possible. Just like when POS terminals came out, there are now a number of tablet POS systems to choose from. Big companies like Groupon and Square have POS systems created for different hospitality segments. Although there are some wonderful creations with the tablets, this form of technology is not made for every business. It gave an example of a company who opened with tablets but within a year forked over much more for the traditional POS system.

Mobile Point of Sale is Helping to Save Small Business|PaymentsSource - 0 views

  •
The term known as a Point of Sale (POS) has evolved greatly in the past couple decades. From an actual human being in a ticket window, to instant mobile ticket sales, we've come quite a long way. Technology has given us the ability to purchase things on both a leisure and business level instantly. From a business standpoint, POS helps optimize inventory, cash flow, expenses, and revenue. And from a leisure standpoint, it just gets consumers what they want faster. This article focuses on the importance of today's POS in small businesses. Stripe, Venmo, and Square are just a few POS applications that help small businesses. This allows the company user-friendly access to invoices, billing, taxes, inventory, payroll, purchase history, etc, etc. Venmo, for example, allows instant payments to either individuals or companies with a few touches of a mobile device, without the presence of the actual card. This third-party POS system verifies and then stores your account information. Prior to these tools, many companies had to resort to only taking cash, or incurring overwhelming credit-card transaction fees. Although evolving POS systems are an asset to small business, there is still a risk of compromising confidential information. For example, WingStop had four locations' POS systems compromised. This results in a lot of bad press and a lot of upset customers.

Although this is not an article per se, I wanted to post this link on here anyways because in recent years I've noticed that more and more places I go to (specifically restaurants and food trucks) I find that they use Square as their POS. After looking through their website I can see why this POS has become so popular. Square is super easy to use, it offers options when it comes to receiving the receipt (as the customer) and you are able to manage your inventory in real time. Additionally, you can create customer profiles, have more than 1 location and create different customer profiles. Basically, this system does everything a traditional POS system does but it is more modern, user friendly and versatile.

New HVAC Hotel and Apartment Technology Obtains Large EPAct Tax Incentives - Energy Tax... - 1 views

  • New HVAC technology called VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume system), also known as VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow), is substantially reducing hotel and apartment building energy expenses. This new technology began to mainstream into the U.S. market after the enactment of the Energy Policy Act and is now being widely recommended by the architecture, engineering, and HVAC industries.
  • there are tax deductions of up to $0.60 per square foot for each of the three major building subsystems: lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning), and the building envelope.
  • VRF/VRV is an air conditioning system most efficient for commercial buildings because of the ability to individualize control for different zones/rooms, whereas conventional systems condition a building as a whole. The system is very beneficial for buildings with varying cooling needs and different zones.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Often hotel investment groups own multiple properties so if they are pleased with VRF/VRV technology incentives, they will replicate it across their hotel portfolio.
  • For both hotels and apartments building HVAC is the largest energy cost item. VRF/VRV’s will annually reduce total energy costs for these two markets by at least 20% and may reduce current building energy cost by as much as 40%

The obvious initial measure hotels take to reduce energy cost and become more "green" are by replacing lights bulbs with LED, switching to paperless options, and other small tasks. The most cost efficient though is the conversion of their central air conditioner and heater, as this makes up a large percentage of costs for the hotel, which is also a burden on the environment due to the excess use of gas and electric to power the system. The new Energy Policy Act that was put into effect helps hotel not only save on long-term costs in the HVAC department, but also get a tax credit. This credit can range from $0.60 to $1.80 per square footage of the hotel. This is helping to encourage hotels to make the switch. This type of technology allows the air to be controlled by different zones in the hotel, which can be each individual room, floor, or however the hotel sets it up. This also prevents the air constantly running in the hotel room when it is unoccupied by hotel guests.

Google wants to make sure users are receiving diverse and relevant search results for their queries. That means that sharing a domain name can sometimes work against you because Google is unlikely to serve a user several hotels that are on the same domain.
  • It’s important to put yourself in a customer or potential customer’s shoes and approach your keyword strategy from that point of view while also considering algorithms, domain crowding, competition, and user intent.

Proximity marketing is and has become the new method of advertising on a device which virtually anyone has; the cell phone. However, due to its popularity it has turned into something more complex due to the amount of organizations using this feature and the somewhat tight geographic locations. A city like New York is a prime example to how many businesses fight for a glimpse of spotlight regarding proximity marketing. Although, Google plays a huge role in helping locate a business, it does not seem to be an equal opportunist for all hotels, for instance.

proximity accurately represent your location in relation to major points of interest in your area becomes even more important for the guest experience.
