Due to the increase in Florida tourism, they will launch this new program to hopefully keep more tourists coming back because of the remarkable hospitality they received. Tourism is up from 2012 and they feel 2014 will surpass 2013, which the state welcomed 93.7 million visitors. That being said, this is a great opportunity for our industry. This will open so many doors for event planners and other hotel positions to help with the increasing tourism and being able to cater to their needs.

Airbnb's New Events Tool Is a Major Missed Opportunity – Skift - 0 views

  •
MOD 11: This article is about Airbnb starting to penetrate the events and meetings sector of the hospitality industry. While their involvement is very minimal, Airbnb has offered booking accommodations for events nearby. Recently, Airbnb released a booking tool for meeting planners to showcase some of the Airbnb properties that would be nearby the event space. Airbnb's involvement in this new release would only be to provide economical accommodations for nearby events, the website wouldn't be used to provide specific details about the event. This new release of technology with Airbnb is very easy to use and almost anyone can look up potential trips using the tab Airbnb for Events on their website. There are some challenges that can occur with this new release, some being that meeting planners won't be able to negotiate discounts, nor will they be receiving commissions for people who book with Airbnb for Events. Also these Airbnb accommodations may not meet the expectations of the attendees for the event since they're use to staying in a clean-cut hotel room.

The Importance of an Online Event Management System - Online Event Management System - 0 views

  • Event organisers are continually appreciating the benefits of an online event management system such as an event management software. Organising an event is not an easy task, especially if the target audience is of a substantial size and if there are many teams involved during the execution phase. For this reason, automating the processes found in the event planning life cycle is a godsend to organisers who are still using old school methods. An online management system practically automates the organising process and leaves lesser room for human error. You may want to know the latest technologies and focus on an event planner software.
  • Modules of Online Event Management System An event organiser should be privy to the following modules of online event management system: 1.) Event Website
  • 4.) Event App Fourth, a highly effective system is customised for mobile use. Many event organisers are currently looking into the benefits of a dedicated event app or an onsite check-in app that facilitates faster registration and attendee entry into the venue. 5.) Online Payment Fifth, a good online event management system will also allow for online payment collection. Gone are the days when event organisers have to process checks and money orders paid by confirmed attendees. Today, with the use of debit or credit cards, attendance confirmation becomes a matter that can be settled in a few minutes.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • First, since most event processes can now be done virtually, except perhaps for attendance, a good online event management system should allow an organiser to create a customised website tailored specifically for an event. With the rise in social media, it has become very easy to share website links and thus any event website can therefore be very accessible to target attendees. 2.) Reliable Email System Second, an online event management system should allow for the simplification of the emailing system. Should social media not be enough to lure a target audience into a website, an emailing system comes in handy in a way that organisers can practically tap their networks by simply sending out invitations by electronic mail. Confirmed guests can also be easily updated or given notifications through this system. 3.) Online Ticketing Third, taking part of the modules of online event management system, is the ability of organisers to pursue online ticketing. Purchasing tickets online is now easier than ever since interested parties can simply choose from a different array of tickets to match their budget and interests. For a concert, for example, this module can greatly help in making sure attendees get their preferred seating or area during the concern date.
  • Those are only some of the modules and characteristics that an event organiser should look for in an effective online event management system.
  •
Organizing an event can be challenging and time consuming especially when there's no system that provides a lot of resources. In this article, there's an emphasis on the significance of event management system. Having this type of system can lessen the pressure and minimize human error. Top five technology trends for meeting and event planners - Corporate Meetings Network - 0 views

  •
This article is about the top technology trends for meetings and events. One of these trends is to have a dedicated high speed WIFI network available to guests, allowing them to download and share media in real time. This is very appropriate for weddings, birthday parties, and baby showers. When it comes to business meetings, having high-performance mobile computing is a must. With top Hi-Tech manufacturers concentrating on mobile solutions, presentation materials can now be shared via portable screens in 3D formats, whether it is on site or through video streaming. Another trend in modern event planing is online photo and video publishing. Given the growing disposable nature of media content, especially on mobile devices, publishing efforts should be a part of every event. Encourage guests to share stories, and incorporate quotes and commentaries. Finally, something I found very interesting in modern event planning is content marketing. In a world where businesses are defined by online footprint, content marketing efforts should be an integral part of promotional efforts. Whether it is business or private, events provide the perfect venue to promote or market anything.

The focus of the article is to highlight how the event industry is becoming more popular among the hospitality industry in Nigeria. It mentions the Events Market Nigeria (EMN) group aims to provide a places that allows for growth and development within the event industry with the newcomers and experienced event planners. The event that was hosted by the EMN, provides free gathering that offer different speakers to offer advice and their experience to those attendees willing to listen. Throughout the article, it states that the country of Nigeria has a population of "almost $200 million people and a reputation for an ostentatious culture", which makes it a perfect place to invest in the event industry. Especially due to the fact that the industry is a source of a more favorable return on investment even though other sources in Nigeria are considered more attractive. What makes the event industry profitable, is the ability to venture with other businesses such as venues, catering, event planning and more. But with all the good, the article does point out the issues such as liability and the lack of rules that are set for the industry. I think that it's an important topic to consider because hotels are implementing a source of revenue with renting out meeting spaces and catering services to outside companies. With more and more events being planned, I think it's a great business to venture in. The ability to have an events department within a hotel or even a restaurant gives the establishment to produce more revenue within other departments. Such as a hotel, the planning of a meeting not only brings in the revenue of the space being rented but also to Food and Beverage with the catering aspect and the front desk with the rooms being occupied by the clients and attendees.

  • Some RFPs for meetings & conferences request that hotels answer: “What’s your sustainability program? How are you minimizing your carbon footprint? What’s your water consumption?”
  • ENERGY STAR is a free benchmarking tool to help U.S. businesses gauge their energy efficiency.
  •
This article makes me proud to work in the hotel industry. Of course, there's financial motivation for being energy efficient, but hey, we can pretend we also do it because it's the right thing to do. As long as owners and operators see opportunities to continue to reduce energy costs, they won't stop. I have to believe that hotels will continue to look for ways to become even more efficient to the point of eliminating their carbon footprint. The hotel business is one of the few industries that have a strong incentive to dramatically reduce energy costs. The fact that the EPA's ENERGY STAR program is working on a new, hospitality-specific scoring system in response to the industry's specific needs and growing demand is pretty cool. I can see such a system becoming measurements for bonus payouts like market share is with Smith Travel Research and further accelerating the work around sustainability in hotels. A great point is also made regarding the retention of employees. The article argues that employees will feel that management cares about their health and well-being. But I would also say that employees want to work for hotels that do what's good and right for our world. You want to work for the good guys. Individual travelers, companies and meeting planners are more and more looking to stay or do business with hotels that are eco-friendly. Thirty six percent more travelers are expected to choose more eco-friendly travel options than they did in 2016. That statistic should definitely get the attention of owners currently in the process of planning a new hotel. If you want a competitive advantage from the day you open your doors, fill up that building with green initiates and let the green slide right down to the bottom line.

Fyre Festival, a Luxury Music Weekend, Crumbles in the Bahamas - The New York Times - 0 views

  • On social media, where Fyre Festival had been sold as a selfie-taker’s paradise, accounts showed none of the aspirational A-lister excesses, with only sad sandwiches and free alcohol to placate the restless crowds. General disappointment soon turned to near-panic as the festival was canceled and attendees attempted to flee back to the mainland of Florida.

  • Still, after a few months of planning — including adding sewage piping and buying an ambulance in New Jersey and shipping it to the island — the organizers thought they were ready for the crowds until the storm on Thursday morning washed away some of what they had built.“Our mistake was trying to own all of it in-house,” said Mr. McFarland, who is also the founder of Magnises, an exclusive members-only benefits card for upwardly mobile millennials. “We were in over our heads.”
  • The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism expressed its dismay in a statement on Friday, citing the festival’s “disorganization and chaos.” It continued: “ We offer a heartfelt apology to all who traveled to our country for this event.”

This article is a perfect example of how event planning can go terribly wrong with social media usage. The Bahama music festival hosted by Ja-Rule and his company left hundreds stranded on the Island of Great Exuma. The event started off by being promoted through instagram, mainly by famous celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Tickets were sold at $1,200 for the utmost luxurious experience. Come the weekend of the festival, music go-ers arrived into full chaos. Everything that had been promised to the guests such as deluxe lodges, yoga tents and food courts were missing. People showed up to an empty island with no food, water or basic shelter. Clearly the festival was poorly executed and planned and it was canceled. There was a lack of infrastructure on the island to provide safety for the guests along with a lack of proper water systems and transportation. The event planners had not had a proper back up plan for storms that could potentially hit the island (which happened) which completely set back everything. Many viewed this Fryre Festival as a major scam and were extremely upset, but what it turned out to be was a poorly planned and executed music event.

Any guest at a participating SPG hotel can Make a Green Choice by forgoing full housekeeping for up to three days in a row (excluding their check-out day). For each night a guest opts into MAGC, they receive 250-500 Starpoints or a $5/5€ Food & Beverage voucher, while helping to reduce the use of water, energy and chemicals. Sustainability strategies are being imposed in hotel chains and one program that I am familiar with is the MAGC in which starwood properties participated in. They have the guidelins to be on brand with these sustainability programs which is both beneficial to our guests loyalty and help sustain on what is left in nature. It has been shown in this topic the different programs that involves every department. The MAGC being introduced or offered to guests upon check-in is a good way to let our guests know that we truly cares and value our environment. And email receipt is also recommended. The SMP is for company or meeting planners with the recommendation of going paperless and go digital and still be efficient and effective. This is also to prevent the property and participants in making unnecessary wastes.
