5 Technologies Event Planners Can't Live Without | blisseventdesign - 1 views

  • Successful Meetings has compiled a list of the top five technologies that event planners can’t live without. For event planners, these technologies deliver much more than you’ve ever imagined.
  • This is the most obvious technology we can’t live without. Let’s be honest—-most of us are glued to our smartphones and our favorite apps 24 hours a day.
  • These applications are advantageous to planners because they allow us to access all details and execution aspects of an event from any web-enabled device—be it a computer, smartphone, or iPad.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Sharing event details on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook is hugely beneficial because of the range of attention you can garner. People show up at events they’ve heard about, think good things about, and understand the value of. This marketing can come from either you or your attendees.
  • Tablet computers are revolutionizing the event-planning industry.
  • When combining tablets with mobile event applications, planners can also communicate in real-time with participants and share or update information in seconds.
  •
With more and more people adopting smart phones, ipads and tablets, event planners should look into purchasing a mobile event app for their attendees to use at their event. Use online event registration software or event management software to help you plan events more efficiently. Display event and ticket sales information online; allow for online registration 24 hours a day. Customers also could use smart phone to check-in attendees. Also they can use social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter to promote your event.

Eventbrite Launches iPad Credit-Card Reader At The Door: A Lost Opport - 1 views

  •
Eventbrite has introduced an iPad credit-card swiping feature that allows merchants to sell on-site tickets, merchandise, drinks and more. The company charges a $0.99 processing fee and each ticket sold takes a 2.5 per cent cut. Eventbrite issued its 50 millionth ticket last month which matches the company raised last May's $50 million in VC funding.
  •
Eventbrite, a leading event ticketing organization, has launched a set of hardware in 2012 following its competitors. It focuses on gaining insight in attendee information and offer one holistic picture of the full performance of an event. So Eventbrite knows that adopting Square as a solution does not gives them what expected due to the unopen API. Arguably, establishing their own software gains more comparing to adopting Square, but they are still being "technology agnostic" and waiting for Square to open the API and work with Square.

"The latest innovative technology solutions can work to increase energy efficiency, cut down on material waste and even increase profits for your hotel". I remember while working in San Antonio Texas as a hotel AGM, the hotel had an agreement with the city water company for us to send them each week the readings of how much water we had used up to that point from last week, and they would give us rebates if our consumption wouldn't fluctuate certain parameters. We were being environmentally friendly, saving money by not overpaying and receiving rebates for our eco-responsibility.

What's new in POS systems? | Technology content from New Hope 360 - 0 views

  • more and more POS keyboards are being replaced by all-in-one touch screens, which save space and are less susceptible to dirt and liquids. Often, these touch screens are paired with new LCD screens that clearly display register totals and broadcast special offers and other store information. The screens can also show personalized ads based on a shopper’s purchase items or customer loyalty information, similar to customized coupon systems already in place at many store checkouts.
  • “Point-of-sale technology has evolved from a cash register to a computerized solution that includes the point of sale, back office, inventory control, reporting and more,” says Robert Symmonds, president of Alberta, Canada-based POS software company Auto-Star Compusystems. “Today, retailers will find POS systems designed to help them save time, reduce costs, improve accuracy, control inventory and manage customers.”
  •
It's clear that part of POS system innovation is technology innovation-iPad & iPhone scanning; self-check in and out function, etc. However, the author clarified what customers want and look forward are not only technology but service. Even though the service doesn't seem to be provided by staffs, the new technology meets needs of new generation of customers, who are independent and looking for more personal service. So the purpose of a successful POS system is to make restaurant management more efficient, prevent theft and create great experience for customers.

New software product transforming hotel guest experiences debutes in Middle East - 0 views

  • Hoteligence is a cloud-based software platform which helps hotels to increase revenue, offer improved room entertainment, and track and analyse guests’ buying behaviour in order to optimise business performance.
  • Hoteligence is all about offering guests relevant content and services at the relevant time. Guests can choose what and when they want to watch something, and they can choose which channel, which device and in which location in the hotel. We make this possible with great content across all media."
  •
A Swedish hotel intelligence organization has chosen Dubai as the location to use a new software product called Hoteligence. This software is about offering guests specific content and services at the specific time. It is a cloud-based software platform that can be operated through TV, iphone, ipad, Android, etc. It offers room entertainment: customers can play Angry Birds, listen to music and connect to social media platforms such as facebook and twitter. This software is also a useful marketing tool which can track and analyze guests' buying behavior. The feedback until now is very good, so I think it is possible to implement Hoteligence to a bigger market and more levels of hotels as this software not only increases the added benefits for guests, but also gives hoteliers a good marketing tool.

Smartphones on Track to Become Room Control Devices | Top Stories | | Hospitality Magaz... - 1 views

  • The newest trend in the hotel space is allowing guests to control everything in the room with one device.
  •
This article presented the possibilities of  the usage of smartphone as the single control device in hotel guestrooms in the near future.  "The newest trend in the hotel space is allowing guests to control everything in the room with one device". Hotel Technology Next Generation(HTNG) recently published a new standard for single remote control to support multiple devices. There already are technology that use television remote for this function. And because of the popularity of smartphones and tablets, guestrooms are now expected to have these devices. HTNG is also working on standards for these devices, they are believed to be able to replace the television as the focal point of control in the future. Although the offering tablet devices in guestrooms is still new to the industry, only several high rank hotels have done. And the usage rates of tables stand much higher than the usage rates for television, These devices have multiple functions vary from ordering room service to turn off the light.   The article also discussed the necessity of television for guestroom control. Many hotels use products that enable guests to connect their own devices onto television and make these devices the remote control for televisions or other devices in the room.
  •
The newest trend in the hotel space is allowing guests to control everything in the room with one device. With the popularity of smartphones and tablets, experts believe they will replace the television as the focal point of control.  People are familiar with smartphones and tablet applications and therefore adoption using those devices rather than a television is more likely Today. In a hotel, if it has not switched to flat-screen TVs, it is probably angering a lot of customers. On the other hand, the experts  don't think the typical customer expects to find an iPad, the trend may shift to just offering apps because smartphone use is becoming even more widespread.

Resistant to the inevitable: How technology is changing the restaurant industry - The N... - 0 views

  • Between the arrival of mobile devices on the table, online reservations, social media, and new payment methods, technology has infiltrated the food and restaurant industry like never before. Some of the advances will serve to improve the experience — both for the industry and for the patron.
  •  According to a recent article in the USA Today, restaurants in San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and in other parts of the United States are starting to allow patrons to use iPads to place their orders. While this may be a welcome sign for the industry as a whole (which, according to the piece, has been flat due to the economic downturn since 2007), it might not work out so well for the servers who are displaced by a tablet.
  • Payroll is one of the largest controllable expenses in the industry, and keeping it as low as possible can have a huge impact on a restaurant’s bottom line.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Besides replacing menus (and possibly those who take your order from them), tablets have the potential to help hosts deal with incoming patrons who may have reservations.
  • But the use of mobile devices isn’t limited to the serving side of things. They can be used to track inventory, regular checklists, and can go so far as to be used in a similar way we use in our own home kitchens – as a way to help out new kitchen workers get a handle on the restaurant’s menu items.
  • Social networking sites have played a huge role in shaping the views of society on a myriad of issues, and they are also playing a role in shaping people’s opinions of dining establishments. With Foursquare, customers can leave their thoughts on a restaurant
  • The transaction was seamless and didn’t seem at all out of place considering the environment I was in. I mean, I didn’t even think about the notion of having Square in a food and restaurant setting, and here it was.
  •
This article is about the new technology trends in restaurants around the US. The article shows how large cities like Chicago and New York are not only using tablets to have customers place orders, but are also using APPS.
  •
Technology has never been more intuitive than it is today, and it's only getting better. It allows restaurant patrons to find restaurants, rate them, and decide where they want to spend their hard-earned money when they go out to eat. It allows restaurant owners to be more efficient and effective in the areas they feel can be streamlined by hardware and software. But if used in the wrong place and at the wrong time, it can do a restaurant great harm - as it can with any industry.

Mobile Pay and Cloud Top POS Headlines from February - 0 views

  •
From lodging to foodservice, the point of service is the premiere place for customers to get their first - and hopefully not last - impression of an establishment. Streamlining and fine-tuning the service that occurs at the POS is of utmost important and operators are always seeking out the latest technologies to make this possible. The move to mobile payment is always top-of-mind as well, but lingering confusion and trepidation still remains for many customers. Owners and operators must seek out ways to implement the technology without intimidating customers. Last month's POS headlines proved this as stories ranged from a study tracking the public perception of mobile payment to improving drive-thru functionality and reducing maintenance costs with cloud-based systems. Study Shows Interest and Confusion Over Mobile Payments At Mobile World Congress, MasterCard in partnership with Prime Research, has released the first global Mobile Payments Social Media Study tracking 85,000 related social media comments across Twitter, Facebook, Online Blogs and Forums from around the world. The study shows a high volume of conversation and consumer interest in adopting mobile payments but cites security, customer support and confusion over the array of options available today as barriers to entry. Taco Bell Streamlines Drive-Thru Experience Across Franchises Desert de Oro Foods' Taco Bell locations had a range of drive-thru communications systems that were deployed over the last five years. However, restaurants were experiencing poor sound quality due to a limited range of wireless capabilities with the current systems. Poor audio quality led to increased wait times for customers as a result of miscommunications and mistakes. In addition, Desert de Oro Foods knew it needed to move to a digital system as the analog bandwidth of its current systems would be ruled out by the FCC at the end of 2012. Panasonic's Attune® drive-thru communications system offered the o

TOP Hotel Technology Trends in 2012, by Ted Horner - 0 views

  • 1. The iPad Revolution This device in my opinion is going to redefine how guests are going to use technology in hotels in the future particularly in the guestroom. Consider these points
  • Many hotels Wi-Fi systems are suffering from a lack of available bandwidth and as result are getting overloaded as guests wish to download their own content.
  • guests want the same technology experience they have at home or office and if they have a bad experience may not return to hotel
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • With the increasing demand for more bandwidth and the subsequent costs to provide this it is in my opinion going to be difficult for hotels to agree to offer anything other than a limited free Wi-Fi mainly for emails.
  • IPads that are made available to guests to use in the guestroom open up a world of new opportunities for hotels to deploy in guestrooms to handle the following applications:
  • 2. Mobility Mobile devices are now part of our everyday life and for many travelers they are now replacing the laptop, PC, telephone, kiosk, and boarding pass as part of the booking activity. A guest’s handheld device is now an integral part of the entire journey, not just from pre-trip planning and booking, but through the actual trip itself.
  • 3. Cloud Computing There has been a lot of talk about this subject and I believe 2012 will be when this technology takes off as a number of PMS vendors release their cloud version where hotels will have the ability to access their major software applications on a web browser.
  • 4. Social Media Wikipedia defines Social Media as “media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques.”
  • 5. Hosted PABX For many hotels one of the largest capital expenditure has been the PABX. In the past revenue from guest phone calls justified this large capital outlay but the advent of mobile phones and the cost of making calls from a hotel guest room have left hotels reeling from the costs of providing and maintaining this service.
  • 6. Energy Management (EMS) With the cost of electricity continuing to raise hotels have to start looking seriously at more sophisticated systems than the traditional magnetic stripe cards in the slot.
  • 7. Lighting Another major contributor to excessive power bills is the type of lighting that is installed in hotels. With replacement of lights to LED and Halogen hotels can save up to 30% and have lights that have a long life up to 12,000 Hours
  •
The rise and rise of consumer technology and the increasing take-up of this technology by our guests combined with the shorter life cycles of this technology creates considerable challenges for both operators and owners of hotels. In the past we stayed in a guest room to experience technology that we could not get at home but now this changed completely and in most instances the reverse is true today where what we have at home is far superior to anything that is in hotel guestroom.

Electronic 'Smarts' at Hotels Attract Guests - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Hotels around the world are using technology in new ways, with the goal of speeding up or personalizing more services for guests.
  • He said he had found that hotels were using technology as a substitute for human hospitality.
  • Instead of the staff at the front desk offering advice on where to go for dinner, guests may be lent an iPad loaded with maps and suggestions for local restaurants and sightseeing.

  • “Hotels are transforming service into a digital concept,” Mr. Davies said.
  • Ms. Kahn said personalization continued to be another big theme in hospitality
  • Ms. O’Reilly said she also used Foursquare to share where she was by “checking in” at that location. She was recently surprised to discover as she was checking in at a Starwood hotel that she qualified for a Foursquare promotion and received 250 points for her Starwood loyalty program account.
  • Some technology offerings extend beyond the hotel’s walls. The Park Hyatt Tokyo rents guests a pocket-size mobile Wi-Fi connector to use with an iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry or laptop to make international calls and get Internet access wherever they go during their stay.
  • Despite all the new bells and whistles, sometimes the most basic of the modern services is what counts the most. Guests’ No. 1 choice of a hotel amenity is free Wi-Fi, according to a 2012 Hotels.com survey.
  •
This article focuses on the "smart" trends in hotels that are replacing the human service. In this article David-Michael Davies does make a good point about "technology as a substitute for human hospitality" Now days hotels are focusing on having the latest technology that it could be seen as if they are forgetting the human service in the hotels. Though, I do agree with Barbara Kahn, that "most guest, especially younger ones who are used to having information at their fingertips…l" However, hotels are still focusing in personalization and making their guest feel like they care about them and not just their money. In my opinion, it is wonderful that hotels are focusing on being up to date with all the technology that is being offered to hotels because it does simplify the whole experience of staying in a hotel and at the same time it saves money for the hotel. Like they mentioned in the article, hotels are saving money by using technology to manage their inventory instead of having employees physically counting them. Specially, when the technology being adopted in the hotels can help safe money for guest. Just like The Park Hyatt Tokyo helps their guest with saving money with international calls. Furthermore, hotels are adding more advantages to being connected with them through social media. by offering promotions, discounts and even free drinks if you tag, check-in or write about them. This type of telecommunication is growing every day, but hotels should remember that the most basic modern service is important for the guest. Free Wi-Fi is a most for almost everybody now days.

AP IMPACT: Recession, tech kill middle-class jobs - Yahoo! News - 0 views

  • Year after year, the software that runs computers and an array of other machines and devices becomes more sophisticated and powerful and capable of doing more efficiently tasks that humans have always done

  • Overall, though, technology is eliminating far more jobs than it is creating.
  • Now, that same efficiency is being unleashed in the service economy
  • Technology is eliminating jobs in office buildings, retail establishments and other businesses consumers deal with every day
  • The uncomfortable truth is technology is killing jobs with the help of ordinary consumers by enabling them to quickly do tasks that workers used to do full time, for salaries.
  • Technology is used by companies to run leaner and smarter in good times and bad
  • They realize they don't have to re-hire the humans when business improves, or at least not as many.
  •
This is a multi-part series by AP News on how the fast pace of technology is wiping out millions of jobs globally. Technology use is in every economical sector and nobody is immune from job losses. It is terrify to think that our world has become so automated and reliant on technological use. While there are many pros on technology use such as being more efficient, accurate, cost savings, speed and others, it has no doubt taking a toll on the economy as a whole. In the hospitality industry, a few quick examples that come to mind include online travel reservations, IPads taking over the jobs of waiters and waitress or our favorite machine the Smart Bar. These advances are unique but we are slowly moving away from human interaction. The point is while we are taking advantage of technology to improve business operations we must keep in mind that in the hospitality field we are about proving as service to others that should be as individual as possible. It will be interesting to see if this series leads to suggestions on possible future applications of technology that would revitalize the job economy or create new possibilities.

Report: Consumers hungry for more in-restaurant technology - 1 views

  •
The following article discusses the results of a survey called, "Market Intelligence Report: Consumer-Facing Technology" conducted by market research firm, Technomic, Inc. According to the survey, consumers have a strong desire to use technology in their restaurant experience. 51% percent of customers say it's important for restaurants to integrate technology in their ordering capabilities. This includes the use of tableside touch-screen devices that enable digital ordering and at-table payments. "Technology can be used as a point of differentation within the restaurant industry, especially with Millennials," says Darren Tristano, Executive Vice President of Technomic. Several companies have already taken note of the consumer's need for technology, and are experiencing increased customer loyalty. In Kitchen 67's Brann's Cafe, every table features a wireless phone-charging station and iPads that control a digital jukebox. It's important to note that this new use of technology should be used as a complement to printed menus to avoid alienating customers. As a restaurant employee and diner, I have seen bits of technology implemented here and there over the years. Owners realize there is a need for it, but are cautious of scaring off their established customer base. I believe that with time, owners will begin to fully embrace technology and the two will benefit from each other. One aspect I am completely on-board with is the use of iPad menus. A photograph of a dish has a bigger impact on a guest than a short sentence description. Even better, the apps can suggest wine and drink pairings for each entree that will increase guest checks.
