Tracking Green Initiatives via Business Intelligence - 0 views

  • Green initiatives not only save costs, meet compliance requirements, and reuse resources, but they also help create brand recognition among customers.
  • The benefits that expand beyond the organization include what occurs within the company as well. Whether managing recycling programs, reusing raw materials, lowering consumption, etc. businesses require a way to monitor these initiatives and to identify ways of becoming more efficient over time. This is where the use of BI and analytics comes in.
  • One of the chief benefits of business intelligence is its ability to consolidate information and provide greater insight into operations.  In addition BI helps organizations monitor performance across business units and can be applied to a broad variety of problems. For organizations looking at applying this to energy usage, managing emissions, or electricity consumption in data centers, BI expansion provides a good way to start the process.

This article identifies the importance of green initiatives within operations and how to link them to available BI solutions. By specifically looking at analytics organizations can assess how they are meeting targets and monitor their performance in relation to their "green" goals. This article also discusses considerations related to expanding BI use to include green initiatives.
  •
Company priorities are shifting towards cost savings and becoming more environmentally aware and business intelligence can help to achieve these goals. BI's ability to monitor performance and alert decision makers about changes in behavior makes it a complementary approach to organizations wanting to become more eco-friendly. Although BI applications are well poised to fill this need, businesses still require a roadmap to successfully tie-in their BI use with their green initiatives. Outside of technology adoption and lowering energy consumption, organizations also support social action initiatives and invest in R&D efforts that work towards more environmentally friendly products and internal processes. This in turn has a broader effect on the environment at large. The benefits that expand beyond the organization include what occurs within the company as well. Whether managing recycling programs, reusing raw materials, lowering consumption, etc. businesses require a way to monitor these initiatives and to identify ways of becoming more efficient over time. This is where the use of BI and analytics comes in.

Expansion of ATRIO Hospitality Technology Platform Propels Growth of Sales Team - 0 views

  • The number of ATRIO PMS installations has increased 300% in 2014. In addition the ATRIO platform continues to grow with more modules and more zero-training features that allow hotels to provide excellent guest service while reducing their total cost of ownership.
  • In order to keep pace with the demand for the cloud-based property management system, PAR Springer-Miller has expanded their global ATRIO sales organization.
  • By leveraging all the capabilities of Microsoft Windows Azure, ATRIO dramatically reduces on-property technology requirements and data security risks.
  •
Though essentially an update from one company regarding personnel acquisitions, this article features the next generation of cloud-based property management systems. It also indicates, based on the growth of this company, that properties are willing to invest in cloud-based technologies rather than suffer the constant depreciation and maintenance that goes with traditional, in-house servers. As with other systems, the two most important items will be reliability and security. If both are provided by PAR Springer-Miller while reducing cost for hoteliers, both sides can potentially benefit. This system is also "built for the cloud", so it's not an online adaptation of a previous system. This may again help improve reliability and security.

E-marketing in Malaysia: some are and some are ignorant - 0 views

  • When Uruguayan footballer Suarez bit an Italian player during a match in the Fifa World Cup in June last year, an Indian restaurant in Kuala Lumpur used it as a marketing tool. On that day, Fierce Curry House in Bangsar offered free biryani meals to those who walked in wearing a Uruguayan football jersey. That is e-marketing for you.
  • In December last year, the bakery called Tommy le Baker posted on Facebook a photo of two large baskets of bread with a poster next to them that said: “Take if you need, pay if you want.” The post was shared numerous times over and within a short time the bread was all taken.
  • Scicom Education Group’s head of Creative Services Vernon Adrian Emuang feels positive about social media in Malaysia when compared to other countries in Southeast Asia. “Perhaps (we are) way ahead of others, in terms of widespread public engagement and intensity of online activity,” he tells The Establishment Post. “Essentially, Malaysians seem pretty clued in. The social media landscape is pretty populated which has facilitated marketing and sales efforts that ride on technology,” adds Mr Emuang.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Mr Emuang says: “As a fragmented market, it is hard to build significant numbers. So it is always important to involve cross-border initiatives.” Especially, the tourism and hospitality businesss. “Boutique accommodation places could register with aggregating travel websites like www.booking.com and www.tripadvisor.com.”
  • Under Budget 2015, the government is giving funds for SMEs to equip themselves with IT facilities for expansion purposes and to venture into overseas market using e-commerce. There is RM80 million (US$24.4 million) to encourage the use of new technology, automation and innovation.
  • “In my consultancy practice, I do not see companies incorporating social media in their crisis communications plans, even though it is very evident that many crises today stem from social media or can spread and be magnified through social media channels. It is only after they are caught like deer in the headlights are they likely to change or take social media seriously,” the Trinetizen Media Sdn Bhd director tells The Establishment Post.
  • “The crux of the matter is that social media forces companies to be more open, transparent and accountable to their stakeholders. But the management culture here, especially with family-owned companies, is closed, almost secretive, and opaque.” Time and the need to expand will force many a business to get into e-marketing.
  •
Malaysia and Southeast Asia is slowly but surely adapting strategic social media and e-marketing into their small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This article focuses on the opposing views on how these tools are being utilized and adapted to help these small businesses. Scicom Education Group's head of Creative Services Vernon Adrian Emuang is confident that Malaysia is ahead of the games in terms of social media and "widespread public engagement". This may sound like a far cry considering that 64 percent of the SMEs in Mayalsia were not engaging in social media in 2012. Emuang emphasizes the impact that social media can have, considering that SMEs account for 99 percent of the 5 million registered Malaysian businesses. Zeno Group Malaysia's CEO told The Establishment Post that "lack of knowledge is holding back many of the SMEs. They feel they need not use social media for marketing purposes." Emuang also says that many of these companies are not implementing the proper technological infrastructure to support their ecommerce, should they receive an influx of traffic on their servers, etc. He even shamed the customer service that lacks the manpower to follow-up with the volume of customers. Many hotel and lodging businesses are adapting global initiatives, such as registering with Booking.com or Tripadvisor.com. These outlets allow ecommerce to flow to a much wider, international audience, boosting bookings and revenues at venues that wouldn't have otherwise. Julian Matthews, a famous Digital Media Trainer and Consultant, says companies are operating social media on a tactical rather than strategic level. The Trinetizen Media Sdn Bdn tells The Establishment Post that many companies aren't utilizing Social Media for crisis communication-something many companies we are familiar with fully rely on. In conclusion, social media adds accountability and reliability for the companies and their stakeholders.

Exclusive: Condé Nast Launches New Event Management Software-With a Twist - 0 views

  • Exclusive: Condé Nast Launches New Event Management Software—With a Twist
    • rnobl005

Conde Nast is a mass media company publishing well known magazines such as Vogue and Conde Nast Traveler. Over the past few years their brands have incorporated more and more events into their repertoire, so I wasn't surprised when I came across this article a few months back. In 2017 they acquired an event concierge platform called Ribyt which has evolved into Concierge.com. Not only is it a guest management software system - it also gives users access to a team of hospitality professionals who can handle project management, staffing, web design, and branding details. I was in the event industry for 5 years prior to starting the graduate program at FIU so I am always excited to see how tech and the events world intersect. I think this software is really innovative and believe it can be a great resource for meeting planners.
  • An expansion of event concierge platform Ribyt—which Condé Nast acquired in March 2017—Concierge.com promises to offer “software with a service.”
  • Translation: In addition to online registration and guest management, users will have full access to a team of seasoned event and hospitality experts.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • “Ribyt started as a home-grown software for managing guests attending our more complex events—events with multiple levels of invitee and variable itineraries,”
  • The resulting platform offers a variety of features and services. On the software side, it can design and deploy event invites, track activity, manage travel accommodations, generate personalized itineraries for guests, delegate responsibilities to team members, and more. The accompanying service side, though, is what makes the platform unique: Concierge.com's team of professionals can handle everything from overall project management to event-day staffing to website design and branding details.
    • rnobl005

To me this is a unique selling point - I don't know of any other management programs that includes people who can help you with the the planning aspects of your event.
  • Concierge.com is a turnkey solution for time-strapped event producers
  • Clients can use the self-service software on its own, or tap into the full-service option. Pricing is based on the number of guests being managed.
    • rnobl005

Again, I like that they've made their service scalable. This takes into consideration that not every client is the same.
  • “Consumers, and as a consequence marketers, are valuing in-person experiences more and more,” says Murphy. “As such, Condé Nast is leveraging its strong heritage in creating unforgettable moments—like the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and Glamour's Women of the Year—to create a full-service offering for clients looking to connect with consumers in powerful ways.”

  • TUI Smartbands not only replace the need for a room key, but allow guests to control the air conditioning and lighting in their room – something TUI says encourages sustainable tourism by better managing energy and resources – and make contactless payments for services such as drinks or entertainment.
  • Stickers embedded with RFID sensors are being used in Aloft hotels in the USA and hidden under carpets near the bed. Triggered by movement and weight, they will sense when a guest wakes up in the middle of the night and put the bathroom light on. These same stickers can also be attached to room service trolleys and, when left outside a room, a sensor hidden near the door will alert housekeeping to come and clear it away.
  •
The connected hotel is here. Gearing towards millennials will be a fact of survival by 2025. Even though some of the technology listed has been used for some time, we can see here examples of the expansion of some of it. The most fascinating technology from this article is the RFID floor sensors placed under rugs. This is a new concept to be, but one that makes total sense and is used in two applications in the article.

What is clean technology (clean tech)? - Definition from WhatIs.com - 1 views

  • Clean technology (clean tech) is a general term used to describe products, processes or services that reduce waste and require as few non-renewable resources as possible. The Clean Technology Trade Alliance, a global initiative to drive the expansion of clean tech, defines it as: A broad base of processes, practices and tools, in any industry that supports a sustainable business approach, including but not limited to: pollution control, resource reduction and management, end of life strategy, waste reduction, energy efficiency, carbon mitigation and profitability. The term "clean tech" is often credited to Ron Pernick and Clint Wilder, who wrote a book called “The Clean Revolution: The Next Big Growth and Investment Opportunity.” In the book, the authors identify several main drivers of clean technology:  the current cost of conventional technology the capital being invested in research and development by large corporations a competitive global marketplace a change in consumer attitude which has brought environmental concerns into the mainstream the growing middle-class in China, which is forcing the Chinese government to invest heavily in alternative energy resources.

There is very little information on even clean technology, but this is the closest that I have seen so far. This article (well, really trying to sell a book) is about global initiative to have clean technology.

I'm now used to seeing a lot of partnerships among hospitality companies -- making it a worldwide trend. The partnership of hotel company, Marriott, and e-commerce conglomerate, Alibaba, resulted in expanding the online travel footprint of both companies. As a result, Chinese travelers find it easier to book hotel rooms across all the brands managed by Marriott. In addition, travelers are able to use Alibaba's mobile payment platform during their stays at Marriott-branded hotels. It's a win-win situation! This partnerships broadens the level of services available to consumers. It comes to show that Marriott and Alibaba have used the proper e-business strategies to succeed in our digital economy.
  •
It is interesting to see how the hospitality industry is also globalizing their business in order to tap into new markets. Marriott has successfully expanded thanks to its Starwood acquisition. Its partnership with Alibaba will create a stronger presence in China. They have forecasted that their customer base will grow to 2 billion customers in the next 20 years and will tap into Alibaba's loyal customer platform. According to Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson, "What we want to do is make sure that a Chinese traveler has what they most want when they show up at our hotels". I think they will be able to achieve this with the inclusion of Alipay, Alibaba's wallet-free travel program which is commonly used. Understanding what customers' preferences and needs are will surely attract and possibly lead to more room for expansion.

7 Event Technology Trends to Explore in 2019 - Eventbrite US Blog - 1 views

    • mrueda

The article discusses seven event technology trends that are trending in 2018. Event planners are on the hunt to discover the next new products or services that will help them stand out in a coward full of competitors. One trend, that I find so interesting is facial recognition technology. Event planners are using algorithms to reach out to new audiences via social media, improve check-in and security! Another trend, that caught my eye was artificial intelligence for events. Technology such as "chatbots." Chatbot is an automated customer service that helps both guests and event organizers. It will alleviate some of the duties of the staff to be more efficient and address guest issues faster. There are also the right APPs that are being created for events for guest to search, book, post and review events in one place. Also for event organizers to price, communicate and organize all in one place.

So, being an event professional in the hospitality industry this article intrigued me. Some of the trends listed are trends that my clients and I have already been using for a few years now like livestreaming events, I had a wedding in Jamaica in 2015 in which my clients live-streamed their nuptials for those daily and friends who could not make the trip. What I did find intriguing was the Facial Recognition aspect of Event Technology. That is unbelievable to me. I know we now have iPhoneXs and SnapChat that already do this so I guess its just a matter of having the right type of phone and app that is compatible with this feature.

This article for event planning and technology shared the current trends of event technology for this year. Facial recognition is becoming popular and is encouraged to use to target an expansive audience. Some events encourage audiences to take advantage of technology by using Facebook to tag photos of the event attendees to to a personalized album. The article also predicts that the future holds facial recognition for attendees checking in for a further improved event. RFID is being widely used by experienced event coordinators in place of event tickets and to reduce payments made physically. With the usage of RFID, it enhances the productivity for the attendees, as well as, make special features, such as raffles, much easier and fun to conduct. Automated customer service features are also rising as it enables guests to conveniently have their questions answered without having to wait to get a response. For example, according to the article, Sound on Sound Fest is a festival for music lovers that created a customer service feature via Facebook Messenger to answer any questions from the potential and prospective attendees. It was said to have instant gratification and success in the ease of asking and answering questions. Apps are also taking a part in events. Apps, such as, Pathable (connect with attendees throughout entire event), Presdo (takes into consideration behavior of attendees), and attendify (share photos, messages, and comments with attendees) are example of applications that events benefit from in this growing trend of event technology. Broadcasting events also assist in gaining popularity for an event and social media walls encourage attendees to post photos of the event with hashtags. Technology is growing and gaining popularity in events. Due to the fact that people are almost never without their cellphones, nevertheless, on their cellphones, the discussed features are popular amongst event attendees and aids in bubbling the posit

  • large-scale hotel breaches were not caused by any specific mistake made by the hotel—they were caused by cybercriminals breaching the hotel’s Point of Sale (POS) system
  • Hospitality companies still need to modernise their infrastructure, train their staff, and hold their partners accountable.
  • While hospitality companies have fewer transactions than retail organisations — and thus have data on fewer customers to steal — they collect substantially more valuable and varied personal data for each of their guests
  •
Cybersecurity is hospitality is a very big issue. Hotels collect very personal data from guests, like names, addresses, credit card information and more. Large hotels have been attacked in recent years and peoples personal information has been stolen. Hotels like everyone else need to update their systems regularly and train staff to know what they should and shouldn't do while in the system.,

This uncovers the dilemma hitting many hospitality businesses, cyber security. It explains why the hospitality industry is at risk and how to prevent against these attacks. It always goes over the simple challenges hospitality faces with this topic.

Marriott International Selects Cloud-based MICROS OPERA as Its Next-Generation Property Management - 5 views

As a current Marriott employee, and a former Trump Luxury Collection employee, this change that is being implemented is HUGE. While working at Trump National Doral Miami as both a Front Desk Agent and a Rooms Controller, I spent much time operating the Opera PMS system on a day to day basis. When I started working for Marriott, and started using the FOSSE system (the system created by Marriott for Marriott properties), I immediately noticed an obvious difference between the two PMS systems. FOSSE is an extremely outdated system which is solely operated by the keyboard, especially using the function keys. The amount of things you can do with the system is very limited, and for a hotel company as expansive as Marriott, it was so odd to me to see it being run by such an archaic system. As I highlighted in the article, Opera has the capability to provide hotel employees from basically every department to input information into one system that could be accessible to everyone and can be configurable to meet the needs of any specific property.
  • From handling reservations to managing accounting and billing, OPERA offers a feature set that can be configured to any hotel's requirements.
  • Marriott International has expanded its partnership with MICROS by selecting the hosted MICROS OPERA Property Management System (PMS) as the property management system (PMS) to be used in all Marriott brands worldwide.

  • increase productivity, drive sales and customer satisfaction, and boost profits.
  •
This goes to show, that Opera till date is well considered by properties worldwide. Apart from the various PMS systems i have used such as Fidelio, Galaxy UX, Galaxy Light Speed, I felt Opera to be the best so far in terms of reports, streamlining items, effecient and reliable.
