Hilton New York installs green roof system | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • Hilton New York has announced the completion of a new green roof system and the installation of a Cogeneration (Combined Heat & Power) System, both designed to reduce the hotel's overall carbon footprint.
  • The installation of a highly-efficient, environmentally-friendly Cogeneration system also situated on the hotel's 5th floor roof setback, will provide in excess of 50 percent of the hotel's electrical power and over 40 percent of its steam consumption for heating and hot water requirements
  • The foliage and roots of those plants naturally absorb airborne pollutants, which in turn prevents large quantities of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. Additionally, the vegetated rooftop deflects solar radiation and reduces the thermal load, reducing the energy previously expended in cooling the property. All together, these benefits aid in the reduction of the Urban Heat Island effect - or increased temperatures in midtown Manhattan due to concentrated cityscapes and a lack of vegetation.

This article discusses some current trends in property management systems and how Maestro by NORTHWIND is ready to deliver. Maestro by NORTHWIND is a PMS used by many independent hotels and resorts and offers 20 integrated modules. One of the top trends for 2012 is mobile optimization for management and guests. More and more people are turning to mobile apps for personalized services, and express check-in and check-outs. Maestro Xpress Check-In App allows properties to use iPads and other tablets to do this anywhere there is WIFI. Maestro's App will also allow managers access to reports, and real-time activity from anywhere allowing managers more control over their business. Another growing trend is cloud PMS. Maestro has a cloud based system that claims it can increase productivity at the same time reducing costs. Managers can manage multiple hotels from a single location and reduce costs because they won't have to maintain an in-house PMS. There is also a steady increase in direct online booking from mobile apps and social media sites. Maestro Web Connection reduces the commissions paid to online travel agencies and 3rd parties by allowing guests to book reservations directly. Another way Maestro helps independent hotel chains is by offering them a guest loyalty system to help them offer some of the same incentive and reward programs offered by larger hotel chains.

Moonstone Hotels Selects ATRIO(R) PMS For Their Entire Five Property Collection - Finances - 1 views

  • ATRIO dramatically reduces on-property technology requirements and data security risks. PAR Springer-Miller employs agile development methods with ATRIO, resulting in frequent product releases and the ability to react quickly to market needs for new features.
  • “The notion of moving to the next generation property management solution in the cloud, without the hardware investment of traditional PMS, attracted us to ATRIO PMS,” commented Winter, Moonstone Hotel Properties. “The move from a capital expense to an operation expense with the SAAS model of service will also allow us to be more nimble in how we can allocate our resources.”
  • The ATRIO hospitality technology platform continues to expand with ATRIO POS and ATRIO Distribution, reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for hoteliers and management companies by embracing true cloud computing, minimizing on-property technology, and reducing implementation and training costs to increase staff efficiency and productivity.
  •
Atrio® is an app based PMS system that is completely hosted on the cloud. The program is built for the way most of us approach new technology. Many of us, especially those entering the hospitality business as young professionals, learn technology by simply looking at it. By this I mean that we expect technology and applications to be self-explanatory. It is an "I want to do X so I will click on X" mindset. Atrio® is set up so that a new user can use this approach to learn the basic functions of the system. Par Springer-Miller, the parent company, states that an individual will be able to check a guest in to a hotel room with zero training and should be able to make a reservation after only being shown one time! This significantly reduces training costs and time. In addition, the completely cloud based system minimizes on-site technology and therefore reducing implementation costs and hardware/software investments as well as allowing for seamless updates. After reading the article, I viewed a YouTube video posted by Par Springer-Miller here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtqtxN2SBJY. I must say, I wish my property would look into Atrio®!

The Pros and Cons of Restaurant Pay-at-the-Table Technology | Toast POS - 0 views

  • Pay-at-the-table apps are becoming increasingly popular among restaurants of all levels, from fast casual to fine dining
  • These apps started as a way for small businesses to streamline their payment processes and reduce technology overhead
  • And yet, many restaurants that have clung to the paper receipt model for years are moving this direction, as it saves the restaurant both time and money, increases profits and tips, and reduces waste. It also provides benefits to the customer, which makes pay-at-the-table even more appealing.
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • In fact, only 41% of restaurants plan to be using tablets by the end of 2017
  • While 68% of diners agree that pay-at-the-table technology improves their experience, restaurant managers and trainers will need to research and test best practices in these situations to provide the customer with the optimal experience.
  • While pay-at-the-table speeds up this process, it can make some customers feel unwelcome to sit and enjoy one another’s company.
  • 1) Technology is Expensive
  • No point of sale system is perfect, but pay-at-the-table programs provide an option that reduces your overall spending on paper products, while also providing your customers with a sense of security. Add in the high morale due to increased tips and less wasted time, and your employees will be clamoring for pay-at-the-table options.
  • A pay-at-the-table system also gives customers the opportunity to use even more secure forms of payment like Samsung Pay or Google Wallet, which uses biometric information or passwords to securely store and transmit credit card numbers.
  • Because pay-at-the-table systems are designed using software best practices, they provide easy access to financial data for both customers and restaurants. Restaurants can connect easily to many accounting systems over an API port, automatically sending financial records and updating restaurant accounts without time-consuming and tree-killing paperwork.
  • Pay-at-the-table systems reduce trips back and forth to the POS terminal, which in turn decreases the time it takes to close the sale. This lets tables wrap up their meal and get back to their day quicker, and reduces friction due to split checks or servers multitasking while payments are being made. Some restaurants have seen increased table turn by 15 percent or more, which in turn increases revenue for the restaurant and increases customer happiness as they get to their table faster.
  • Restaurants are some of the worst offenders for waste in general, but getting rid of paper receipts help companies reduce their overall waste and receipt expenses. Paper receipts require purchasing rolls of paper and ink cartridges, or if you choose to use thermal paper you run the risk of exposing employees and customers to BPA, a known carcinogen.
  • Pay-at-the-table gives customers a sense of security knowing that they keep control of their credit card and its financial information
  • Pay-at-the-table is an investment when you factor in the cost of enough technology to reasonably serve the entire restaurants. Despite these expenses, you may find that the initial investment pays dividends because you avoid costly software updates and the eventual expense of a specialized POS register.
    • ngerv001

Convenience and efficiency should be the bread and butter behind any food operation. Restaurant owners have to worry about so many aspects from budgeting, staffing, scheduling, ordering, and everything else in between. The operational advantages with tablet POS systems are numerous. Typically tablet POS systems have a lower initial investment with hardware and software than traditional systems. This helps greatly reduce the overhead cost and improves ROI, helping restaurant owners to properly keep in line with their budgets.
  •
This article details the up and coming new trend of restaurants offering customers the ability to be able to pay at their table. The article details the various pros and cons associated with the type of service and how it can benefit the customer as well as the employees of a restaurant establishment. While not perfect, there are many pros associated with a pay-at-the-table service that are hard to ignore, and it is my humble opinion that this kind of service will continue to catch on into the near future. Customers are increasingly looking for new ways to utilize technology to their advantage to be able to get in and out of a restaurant and pay-at-the-table technology definitely allows that. The companies that adopt this kind of technology will increasingly see their profits grow as well as their table turn increase.

Green Technology: Green Technology for Hotels - 1 views

  • In the light of the recent Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, savvy hoteliers are accordingly adopting the latest green gadgets and waste reduction techniques to stay ahead of the game.
  • Hotel architecture has also undergone something of a transformation and many new green hotel developments are being designed to fit in with the local landscape. Energy reducing technology applied at the build stage can often make significant energy savings by the use of green roofing and building materials and energy reducing technology.
  • bio fuel heating

  • recycled water
  • ozone
  • in the form of card key switches for electricity and air conditioning, linen cards for re-using towels and sheets and motion sensors for electricity in public areas
  • over recent years are installing energy efficient fixtures and fittings for bathroom taps, shower heads and sanitary ware.
  • Of course green measures don’t have to cost the earth.
  • Further cost effective measures can be applied when it comes to guest activities
  • So even if you’re operating on a much smaller scale than the big chains, it’s worth adopting a green technology policy to suit your budget.
  •
In this article it discussed the main green technologies used for hotel chains and independent hotel owners. In a bid to reduce carbon emissions ahead of possible future legislation, many hotels are adopting strategies to comply with stringent energy guidelines. Large hotel chais are making sure they go extra miles to ensure their green credentials are noticed. Green consultants and architects are employed and eco-friendly strategy for sustainable technologies are rolled out at the entire hotel groups.  Hotel architecture transform to more new green hotel developments which more fit in  with the local landscape as well as energy reducing technology apply for the roofing and building materials. Bio fuel heating replace for diesel and recycled water being used to irrigate hotel grounds. Some hotels are using ozone instead of chlorine in the pools. Other green energy management systems has become increasingly common. Green gadgets are proving a cost effective choice and can also reduce the impact of heavy guest usage on resources. Many Chins are minimizing waste by avoiding over-paced products and asking to deliver minimal wrapping.  Further cost effective measures can be applied to guest activities. They promote local restaurants and attractions within walking distance or only a short care journey away. Bicycles are offered for guests or endorse local tour firms which save on multiple car journeys.  Eco-friendly measures and green technology as part of hotel's general philosophy are well accepted. It also helps to ensure future goodwill and increase occupancy rates. It worth adopting a green technology policy to suit a hotel budget.
  •
Through the article, I found that more and more companies and customers concern about green technology and it has became a heated issue for hotel chains and independent hotel owners. Then why do we need green technology in hotel industry? The answers varies: the general one could be that we need a green world and we should reduce the burden of our environment; for customers, I think we should try to protect the place that provides us beautiful view and nice mood and to make it more comfortable to live in; for hoteliers, building and operating hotels means more saving on energy, more profit, and higher reputation. Even through we have different points of view, we can work on the same theme. Then the problem came in: how to build and operate a green hotel. The author of this article gave me some ideas and I am sure green technology can be everywhere. For instance, large hotel chains can employ green consultants and architect and even launch test sites where they can assess the effectiveness of their green strategy. Professional architects can customize their design to fit the local landscape. From the beginning we can have the green roofing and building materials which can benefit us a lot later. The facilities and operation system can be energy saving by focusing on every detail such as the recycled water and bio fuel heating.  Besides in room technology can be green too. Hoteliers can also try to plan some actives that are environmental friendly for their guests.  Green technology can be applied to every step of building and operating hotels. It is meaningful for hoteliers to focus on the green theme.

"The latest innovative technology solutions can work to increase energy efficiency, cut down on material waste and even increase profits for your hotel". I remember while working in San Antonio Texas as a hotel AGM, the hotel had an agreement with the city water company for us to send them each week the readings of how much water we had used up to that point from last week, and they would give us rebates if our consumption wouldn't fluctuate certain parameters. We were being environmentally friendly, saving money by not overpaying and receiving rebates for our eco-responsibility.

This article discusses a couple of ways in which hotels are extending themselves to go green. Specifically the article lists three ways in which these hotels are initiating themselves into going green, which are through low water consumption Power saving, and solid waste disposal. The article also discusses energy efficient lighting.  Along with discussing these processes, the article explains that its not easy to be green in this sector, but the hotel industry now has a new environmental conscience. This being great for hotels. its one step in opening a new way to help get our environment back to where it needs to be and with there being such a large scale of hotels why not get them in the best order that we can get them.

As the article states"The hotel industry has long been associated with excessive waste: using powerful chemicals for cleaning and wasting energy for maintenance rather than being environmentally friendly. Moreover and as result of tourism industry growth, the demand for resources from the hospitality sector has exponentially increased. However, the new popularity of Eco Tourism has encouraged hotels to adopt new green practices that allow them to reduce their negative impact on the environment" The hospitality industry can help improve the environmental problems we are going through at the moment by simply adding: low water consumption, power saving, energy-efficient lighting and solid waste disposal. Furthermore, the guest are starting to become more aware and loyal to brands that are making changes to become green and there is where eco tourism starts and its getting bigger. In the future, all hotels will have to follow the LEED requirements which makes them follow certain rules to help reduce energy and go green. This will help the hotel managers and industry save money and at the same time help the environment.

With the technology of VoIP, hotelier can even give guests free limited or unlimited international calls, which may attract more guests.

Why sustainability should be a core subject in hospitality management | By Arturo Cuenl... - 0 views

  • The CEO of Scandic hotels Ronald Nilsson prognosticated in 1994: "Tomorrow's market is about mutual values.
  • These hotel groups strive to accomplish their key performance indicators such as reducing energy and CO2 emissions, reducing water consumption or waste going to landfill.
  • "No complex, evolving, and self-adapting organization can be adequately understood merely though analysing its parts and ignoring the full system.

  • And, of course, sustainability still needs to fulfil the classic economic axiom: to offer great value for money.
  • Hospitality practitioners consider it essential that hospitality management educators provide students with a more realistic view of the industry in addition to the technical skills and knowledge essential for careers in the industry.
  • the environmental dimension: how can we minimize environmental impacts in our organization? (2) The economic dimension: how can we maximize our economic profit? And (3) the social dimension: how can we maximize the social well-being of all stakeholders?
  • The interesting thing about hotel companies that are more sustainable is that they are better capable of attracting and retaining talent.
  • Employees work together with managers to improve and innovate in social and environmental actions.
  • However, though sustainability is about improving company image, it should not be seen as involving only one specific department or consisting only of isolated actions. It must be established as a core value within the company, as a part of its DNA
  •
This article touches upon why it is so imperative for sustainability practices to be taught in the hospitality industry. It talks about how the next generation to come will not be able to tolerate today's world's insensitivity to the environment. Sustainability has shifted from a want to a must. Many big name hotels, like Marriott, have set high goals to reduce their environmental impact. They have key performance indicators like reducing energy use and the level of CO2 emissions to help aid the Earth's environment. The goal should be to have zero CO2 emissions and zero landfill waste, but this is a goal that will take time to reach. Profits should not be the only thing businesses are interested in. Sustainability should be included in the training process of employees within the business whether they be in customer service, kitchen or marketing...everyone can help save somewhere. Sustainability has become the new management dimension, right along with providing memorable experiences and providing good service. It has been shown that companies who practice sustainability in the workplace have a lower turnover rate because the employees know they are working towards a greater good and are given a sense of purpose.

Cloud Software Allows 700-Acre Resort's Financial Team to Regain Significant Man Hours ... - 0 views

  • When Tetherow, a now 700-acre resort in Bend, Oregon, first opened as a golf course and clubhouse in 2008, we were a small business with big ambitions.
  • Today, Tetherow is made up of twenty individual entities rolled into one wholly owned subsidiary, including a 50-room boutique hotel, a pool, two restaurants, vacation rental homes, an events pavilion, a recreation center, a golf academy, and various residential neighborhoods, as well as the 18-course golf course that started it all. In addition to our leadership team, our rapid growth has been led by our financial team’s investment in a technology that allows us to grow fast, under pressure, and with limited risk.
  • We came to realize that the technology and accounting systems that we had added piecemeal over the years to support our burgeoning business, a combination of Jonas restaurant software, QuickBooks, and Excel, didn’t allow us to scale and sustain growth.

  • After doing some thorough research, we decided to invest in Sage Intacct, a cloud-based financial ERP, because we felt its features – particularly automation – could take on our day-to-day tasks, and give our finance department the time in their day to provide trusted strategic advice, rather than mostly crunch numbers.
  • Our finance team was able to shorten our consolidations process from more than a week to less than four hours per month, cut our monthly close in half – from twenty to fewer than ten days – and regained 24 hours a week – previously spent on cash analysis.
  • Most importantly, a cloud-based financial ERP changed our culture. The finance team saw productivity gains that made us better business partners across the organization. We could provide advice on strategic business decisions

Security has always been an issue for financial services which led to avoidance of some new technology systems. Due to advancements in cloud systems, I think it is time for financial services arms of hospitality organizations to reap the increasing number of benefits of cloud computing. Also, cloud-based financial Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) helps companies enter new markets, explore new opportunities, and strengthen their business processes. Cloud-based financial ERP has certainly helped Tetherow Resort by reducing costs and allowing their finance department to concentrate on their strategic business matters rather than dealing with IT and infrastructure issues. By switching to a cloud-based system, Tetherow Resort was able to reduce the amount of infrastructure stored onsite, reduce costs of the process and develop new strategic plans. In my view, there is a huge potential in cloud-based financial ERP in for financial and even non-financial companies, because through this system companies' finance departments are able to increase the efficiency of their operations.

Airline ticket distribution: How airlines might reduce Global Distribution System (GDS)... - 0 views

  • After a quick search I found and booked the same ticket through an online travel agency for a bit more than the price on the airline website, but less when you included the €8 fee. Unfortunately this small change in booking method would have cost the airline a substantial amount of money. Here’s why…
  • Selling costs generally represent around 4% to 8% of overall airline expenses
  • Many airlines sell a large proportion or the majority of their tickets through indirect channels.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • A key driver for the high cost of selling tickets through indirect channels is the fees charged by Global Distribution System (GDS) companies for each ticket sold. With airline profit margins under constant pressure airlines need to find ways of reducing distribution costs by selling tickets to customers directly instead of through 3rd parties.
  • The fees to distribute tickets through the GDS are relatively high averages around US$12 per return ticket [2]. In 2012, it was estimated that approximately US$7 billion in GDS fees was paid by airlines which was over twice the industry’s expected net profit for that year [3].
  • Quite simply, the GDS is something that airlines cannot live without. Why? If your competitors are using the GDS and you are not then your tickets will not appear in any searches by 3rd party distributors meaning it is unlikely your tickets will be sold by the 3rd party.
  • Even low-cost carriers such as Air Asia and Ryanair that have avoided the GDS for years have recently started selling tickets through the GDS as they have realised that they are missing out on revenue from not selling tickets through the GDS.
  • The ‘New Distribution Capability’ (NDC) is a XML-based data transmission standard set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and provides a set of guidelines for communications between airlines and 3rd party distributors. The NDC will allow for the sale of ancillary products (for example, baggage, meals, special seating etc.), something which the GDS currently cannot handle. However, while the NDC has the potential to help airlines boost revenue, there are still questions as to whether there will be any benefits stemming from reduced distribution costs.
  • How can we make our direct channels so attractive that customers will want to use them over indirect channels?”
  • The simplest solution is to ensure that the user experience on the airlines website is seamless and easy. Users are highly likely to abandon online bookings and use another booking website if they encounter difficulties. Simple actions such as ensuring customers are not diverted to an error page can translate into a significant increase in direct bookings
  • Airlines might also want to re-think the way it provides incentives and commissions for ticket sales.
  • With the trend moving towards airline consolidation (for example, partnerships, equity interests and mergers) airlines might also consider how they can work together to sell each other’s tickets on their websites. This strategy goes well beyond the sale of interline or codeshare tickets and will give customers benefits including the ability to book multi-airline itineraries directly from an airline website. Of course airlines must be wary of how they do this to ensure they are not in breach of any anti-trust regulations.
  • There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach and for an airline to decide on the best distribution strategy it will need to conduct a solid analysis into their customer behaviours, channel usage and also the commercials of their different distribution systems.
  •
In this article we discuss the issues that airlines are having with the GDS system. They give an example of someone attempting to purchase a ticket through an airline website, and then through a travel agency. The direct airline method was only cheaper, if the guest provided information to a direct bank account. The cost for airlines to sell is a bit less than 10%, and they are sold mostly through indirect channels, like travel agencies. The main reason this can happen, is the integrated GDS system. A GDS system is a data facility that shares inventory information for various airlines to different 3rd party channels. The issue with this, is that the total in fees for the use of the GDS system was around $7billion, which is twice the amount of net profit they are receiving. People state that the airline system cannot survive without the GDS, but is that statement really true? Airlines like Air Asia or Ryanair have really attempted to focus on selling tickets directly, and really expand on their profit. How can this be achieved? Well, airlines are making the booking process easier for guests to manage, which gives them more of a reason to book through there. Also, they are offering greater loyalty rewards for directly booking through the site. Different incentives need to be created to attract guests to book directly. Lastly, they would like to create another distribution system, to put GDS out of business. This new system will work to allow guests to handle meal and baggage fees. Concepts that the GDS cannot handle. With that said, will this new system reduce costs for airlines? I guess they will have to wait and see.
