  • Although Blockbuster began a rentals-by-mail and streaming service belatedly in order to fight against competitors like Netflix, they didn’t come on strong enough or soon enough.
  • It was a battle between old technology and new technology, and it looks like new technology won out in the end.
  • That being said, Netflix is definitely the most successful of these Blockbuster-replacement services and has been steadily gaining traction over the years
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • They started out as a DVD rentals-by-mail service and business has been booming ever since they introduced a streaming subscription service as well.
  • “Back in 2000, Blockbuster declined several offers to purchase Netflix for a mere $50 million.”
  • Blockbuster is certainly hitting themselves for not jumping at the offer, which may have seemed irrelevant and unimportant at the time.
  •
I chose this article because I believe it is a perfect example of how to make the most out of the technology revolution! Blockbuster did not see the opportunity fast enough and so Netflix put them completely out of business. There are advantages and disadvantages to the "wait and see" approach but I think in this case, Blockbuster missed out on a huge opportunity and they didn't look into the future as they should have. As technology is constantly evolving, the only way to keep up is to stay current.

  • An integrated event management platform organizes processes by allowing seamless flow of data between different CRM systems. This reduces effort of manually updating different spreadsheets and optimizes departments working on the event
  • Integration also reduces the risk of typos and other errors that may creep in while transferring crucial data manually between different systems
  • Other benefits amongst the endless list include smart social media and email marketing and online registration and payment processes. With so many event management solutions available in the market, it is definitely worth to have a closer look at the myriad options. But before you start laying your hands on an integrated event management platform, you should also be aware of some of the challenges of event management platform
  • an event planner in a non-profit would require a platform that can help them reach their development goals and retain donors, while a planner in any corporation would focus on planning and reporting internal and external events
  • A disparate point solution on the other hand, may provide you the flexibility but may not provide you other benefits of a platform and may not integrate with your CRMs.
  • event planners and marketers wear different hats all the time and a proper platform can not only help them streamline and automate most of their manual planning tasks, it can also make them more efficient and save a lot of time and cost
  • It may not be a “magic bullet” for any organization, but it can definitely provide a magical touch if used properly. With proper help, you and your team can achieve the next level of success and deliver memorable events with a higher return on investments.

This article compares the advantages and disadvantages of having a computerized accounting system and then also completing the task by hand. When looking at different factors it is clear that it seems like an owner would run a risk going either way because where the computer would lack in areas, the human touch would prevail and then where a human touch would lack in other areas, the computer would prevail. Therefore, I would conclude that it is probably better to have a little bit of both to help make the process smooth but not over bearing on a human or even on the computer.

This article basically goes over the pros and cons of switching over to computerized accounting systems like Quickbooks and Freshbooks. It goes over the main concerns like data breached and human error, but it also deleves a little deeper to discuss how many of the software require regular system and hardware updates in order to have the software run efficiently.

Robotic Technology in the Hospitality Industry Set to Shift | - 2 views

  • In hospitality, the use of robots can be considered a bit trickier because they would be required to interact directly with humans. Human responses are largely less predictable than machine communication
  • They can work with peak efficiency for longer periods than humans. Robots are also able to carry out a whole lot of tasks faster than humans. Additionally, when robots are used, human error is eliminated. You can expect a very high level of precision and accuracy.
  • robots cannot act beyond their pre-programmed range of actions. Sure, with artificial intelligence, they can learn a few things, but whatever new information they would learn has to be within certain confines.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Right now, the duties of robots have moved from being just the dangerous and difficult tasks that we don’t want for humans. Robots now do the everyday job of making people happy, serving them food, waiting on them and making children laugh
  • Looking ahead, robots would be data goldmines in the nearest future.
  • The patterns recorded and learnt by the robots can be used as data to predict customer preferences and adjust services accordingly.
  •
The article discusses advantages and disadvantages of the potential usage of robots in hospitality-related companies. Robots can make people's jobs easier. They should be wisely programmed to communicate with humans. Robots are also used to collect data for future research and analysis.
  •
Nowadays, using robotics in hospitality has become a trend. Although it has proved that robots were not only suitable to do dangerous or repetitive work but also dealing with human guests. Robots can do the work of making humans happy. There is a concern for them in the hospitality field that robots will replace humans and make humans lose jobs. However, according to the article, it is not always accurate since sometimes using robots can make the service more organized and systematic and attract more guests, thus maintaining the needs for human workers. Looking ahead, robots would be data goldmines in the nearest future. They do not replace people, rather, they are tools used by people.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Cloud Kitchen | SupplyNote - 0 views

  • cloud computing has been used in nearly every aspect of day-to-day life. It is used to store images, stream online movies, and even operate businesses and, now increasingly used to order food online
  • Since the client order and interactions happen through a third party food aggregator app or the restaurant’s app, cloud kitchens are the application of cloud technology in the food business.
  • A cloud kitchen uses food aggregators and online apps to take food delivery orders and have cut off the dine-in space busines
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Compared to opening a traditional restaurant, creating a cloud kitchen will not cost you a fortune. And after you’ve constructed your virtual kitchen, it’ll be even easy to expand. Cloud kitchen businesses don’t need to rent or buy a lot of space when they grow; hence scaling up is possible with low investment.
  • The most significant benefit of the cloud kitchen business is eliminating costs such as restaurant space, decor, dining tables, chairs, high-end cutlery, and electrical fixtures
  • A cloud kitchen may operate many brands or digital restaurants within one roof by sharing the space
  • A cloud kitchen business model is flexible and can change the menu; cuisine’s themes much easier than the dine-in restaurant. If a cloud kitchen finds some menu item not very profitable, the same can be swapped without reprinting the menu and avoiding extra cost.
  • Food aggregators charge anywhere between 20-30% of commission,
  • The ambience and interactions with the restaurant staff are two factors that contribute to consumers being more engaged to a restaurant

Online Marketing: Future Challenges for Hotels, by Kristie Willmott - 0 views

  • At first glance, transparency puts marketers at a tremendous disadvantage. Before the Internet, we could communicate our message through "one-way" media - newspaper and magazine advertising, for example, which consumers received but could not interact with. Opinions about us were largely limited to a handful of "critics" and travel writers. No longer; our critics can now be ubiquitous. But, in fact, this democratization of opinion has an upside if we use online marketing wisely. This is because the sheer number of comments and opinions on sites like TripAdvisor means that the truth about us will come to the surface; there are simply too many independent opinions to manipulate or distort the message unfairly. So, looking ahead, what do we need to do in order to master this transparent "brave new world?" First, we need to market to individuals, not groups. Much has been made of the importance of "generational marketing" and the need to target specific demographic groups. And, there is no doubt that different generations behave differently. Baby Boomers, we are told, search the Web less but send more email than Gen Y. Gen Y will continue to affect older and younger generations through its wholehearted embrace of all things digital. We have a worldwide aging population that has its own needs when it comes to online marketing, including things as simple as being able to read a computer screen. Many countries are already wrestling with issues of discrimination in regards to the digital age.
  •
Customers at one time used to receive information about a business/ product through a media where there used to be no interaction. With the use of emarketing businesses have become more transparent. So for the future marketing needs to be done to individuals and not groups. " Much has been made of the importance of generational marketing and the need to target specific demographic groups." This is due to the fact that different generations behave differently and use the web differently. " We have a worldwid aging population that has its own needs when it comes to online marketing."

There are so many reasons why a business should choose to go with a point of sales. The ability to track and record sales, marketing and promotional sales allows you to gather data from previous promotions and security is also a plus for adding a point of sales. You can monitor sales without being present; instead of focusing on ensuring that employees don't take money, POS would allow you to perform other jobs within your role.

This article discusses only the positives of POS systems. I do agree with the fact that there are many advantages of these systems such as monitoring sales. These systems are also cost-effective and convenient. However, I personally would have liked to see some disadvantages in the article, even though I do feel that these systems are very advantageous to the hospitality industry.

Virtually There: Property Management Systems Expand Far Beyond Their Original Scope-and... - 0 views

  • The Cloud
  • a search for a system (or system set) with much broader capabilities.  These usually include marketing, multiproperty reservations, distribution channel management and coverage of every aspect of the guest experience, both on and off property.
  • Many vendors have also expanded their coverage into revenue management, sales and catering, spa/golf/activities and so on, within their own software and/or by interfacing to specialized systems from other vendors.
  • Property management systems (PMSs) have been fundamental software in every hotel for decades
  • As more guest and operating information needs to be captured and managed, many hotels and resorts need multiple other systems to complement the PMS. However, the more applications are required, the greater the amount of computer room hardware needed to run them and the more complex the support requirements become.
  • Cloud computing takes virtual server tools one stage further, using them to allocate the resources of vast numbers of servers quickly and flexibly among many different companies’ needs
  •   Further, the on-demand flexibility means that hoteliers no longer need to worry about buying and implementing more hardware resources as their businesses grow; they just call up the cloud vendor and ask for it to be allocated.
  • Data storage is another factor,
  • toring all this data on cloud-based servers is cheaper than continually expanding on-site storage, though of course selection of a trusted, secure vendor for the cloud is even more important.
  • There’s one link between the PMS and the revenue management system, one to S&C, one to the GDSs and Web booking sites, and so on, not one per system per property.  Traditional remotely hosted approaches do outsource the support and security issues but can’t provide the economy-of-scale savings nor the flexibility of clouds.
  • Alternatively, since many cloud-based systems are accessed via Web browsers it’s also possible to use 3G (and soon 4G) high-speed cell phone connections to access them if the Internet or other main communications line goes down.
  • The best approach, though, is to keep a copy of enough critical data on property at all times so that operations can continue even if connection is lost completely.
  • Traditional PMS functionality is still the essential core at every property.  By tracking and managing all aspects of guests’ stays, it’s both a source and collection point for the crucial activity and preference information that forms the basis of all future relationships with them, on and off site.
  • At the same time, the move to cloud-based architecture makes all of these combinations simpler to create, implement and support.
  •
Traditional PMS functionality is still the critical core at every property. By tracking and managing all aspects of guests' data, it's both a source and collection point for the crucial activity and preference information that forms the basis of all future relationships with the guest. But with the change of technology and the manner we do business today, hotels now need a wider function set than what a traditional PMS provides. Having a PMS on the web and in the clouds is getting more popular. These new Web services make it easier for new vendors to develop fresh approaches and link them quickly and effectively into established systems, providing hoteliers with richer and more varied options. There are more advantages than disadvantages when using cloud computing. The world is changing rapidly and in other for hotels to survive, they have to keep up with those changes.

Overall this article gives an overall prospective of how PMS are run. The basics include how PMS systems have move from a completely paper run process to a completely virtual program. This article also speaks of how the us of Clouds has changed the possibilities for PMS systems. Now information can be stored over the internet and accessed from anywhere. The article does mention many draw backs to this process such as outages and server errors. Internet advances have made the speed and flexibility of PMS much more vast.
  •
Hey all, here is an article I found that talks about the traditional PMS systems for hotels and how it once rained supreme. Now a days, traditional PMS systems are not cutting it anymore because businesses are growing and are trying to find systems that have more functionality. This article brings up a few different options that a business could adopt and put into use. Installing software applications at the property is becoming unmanageably complex. Despite very worthwhile gains in functionality, no PMS will ever cover everything a hotel needs; none offer telephone service, for example. As more guest and operating information needs to be captured and managed, many hotels and resorts need multiple other systems to complement the PMS. The first option the article bring up is Virtualization, Server virtualization is not a new technology, but its adoption by the hospitality industry is relatively recent. The basic concept is that specialized control software allows the physical resources of a single computer server-memory, disk space and computing power-to be divided as needed between several different software applications, each perceived to be running on its own dedicated server. The second option is running a cloud based system, we all know what that is so I will let you read the article. Enjoy
  •
The author attributes a growth in 'hotel complexity' that is driving the need for a change with traditional PMS systems and the limits of their capabilities. According to the article, the current PMS system is unsustainable and will need to evolve to meet client's demands- such as cloud computing, which is highlighted as being beneficial to hotels especially with regards to flexibility, better security, speed of implementation, etc. The pros and cons of cloud computing are clearly described, the cons mainly being loss of connectivity and security breaching. Although traditional PMS are essential for most hotels, cloud computing could put them at a competitive edge.

Emerging Technology Applied to the Modern Day: A Hospitality World with a Hotel App | A... - 0 views

  •
The debate over "high-tech" or "high-touch" is largely a thing of the past in the hospitality industry as emerging technologies drive unprecedented change in the way hotels operate and serve customers. It is clear that investments in technologies can generate greatly improved operating efficiencies, higher hotel revenues and enhanced guest services. The pace of change, however, has been so extreme as to leave many hotel organizations uncertain about what types of technology to adopt and the best ways to create a seamless integration of systems company-wide. In addition, investments made by many hotel owners and operators during the last five years have lagged as a result of the serious downturn weathered by the industry. Many hotel organizations are using technologies so outdated as to place their companies at a competitive disadvantage in the marketplace. The technology life cycle provides a model to assess how and when companies and individuals adopt new technologies. Pioneers are generally the first to acquire new technologies and take the greatest risk. A second category of technology users -- leaders -- adopt relatively unproven technologies, but the risks are known and accepted. Obsolete technology at the other end of the spectrum may seriously impair a company's ability to compete. In terms of costs and benefits, the best balance appears to be with the leaders who invest significantly less than pioneers and incur reduced risks, yet their technology investments can yield similar benefits.

Yes, but what types of customer service is being provided? What are the benefits to the customer of having their customer service?
  •
The article above describes a new innovative system for the typical small business owner. If you are in need of some simple, easy to use technology then this might be the article for you. It's called NCR Silver, a new POS system capable of performing all the necessary function of operating a business all with one solution. It has the ability to track sales, manage inventory and records, and review key data. With all these features at the disposal of a small business owner, it could do a great deal in helping them increase their businesses profitability. The software is a cloud-based system and has the ability to be used on all portable Apple products. It is like having your business in the palm of your hand, literally! NCR Silver is already being used in Georgia throughout the Atlanta area and is slowly gaining popularity. As the cloud-computing idea takes hold, I believe this software will be found nation wide. Below is a link that demonstrates the software in use. ENJOY! www.youtube.com/user/NCRSilver

I like the mobile being discussed here, can these be expanded into tracking devices I wonder. I don' t like the rather vague description being provided on there customer service polic. It makes me weary of using the software if I don't see any benefits listed under customer service or troubleshooting. Would someone be there to assist if I was trouble using there system or if goes down. What assurances are provided? Warranty, Insurance, etc. It should be more than just we provide customer service.

  • Moving tenant services online; Offering web site creation and integration; Eliminating the need for extensive software training and maintenance; Enhancing communication between owners and managers; and, Improving record keeping and security.
  • The Trend Will Continue The advantages offered by SaaS systems closely mirror the issues that property managers have to solve. Moving services online, integrating data, reducing technical issues, improving record keeping and enhancing communication are all advantages that will continue to motivate companies to adopt SaaS based property management software.
  •
This is a very comprehensive article that talks about the web-based, Software as a Service systems (SaaS). It is different from the traditional PMS and it has advantages over the traditional one. The author gave us five advantages of SaaS. All of the five advantages are so good that after read this article, I think there will be a trend that it will be the SaaS world in the future and this trend will continue.  However, the author didn't write any disadvantages. Usually for a company to make a decision before the company knows not only the pros and but also the cons.
  •
The advantages offered by SaaS systems are very similar to that of which property managers have to solve. It controls property's operations such as processing reservations, check-ins and check-outs. Saas stands for Software as a Service which drives the attention of new technology for property management which includes moving tenant services online, offering web site creation and integration, eliminating the need for extensive software training and maintenance, enhancing communication between the owners and managers and it helps improve record keeping and security.
  •
With technology evolving the property management  software.  Most  vendors are now offering  web-based, Software as a Service  is being  adopted by most property managers are adopting it because  they the advantages of the SaaS model help them accomplished most of their goals.which are to move tenants services online,  offering website creation and integration, eliminate the need for software training and maintenance ,improve  record keeping and security as well as better record keeping.  Furthermore this service can be accessed on smartphone as well as tablets. And also one of the primary characteristics of SaaS property management vendors is that they've designed their systems specifically to be easy-to-use and to appeal to those who aren't especially tech savvy. This results in a faster learning curve for property managers who are not technically proficient. And also it offers  better record  keeping since it  back up the data.

Apple iPad Restaurant Menus: The New Way to Order Food [Video] - 1 views

  •
As the world develops, more and more restaurants use e-menu to order food. Ipad, the fashion of technology also attract restaurants eyes. Some owners invest into Ipad menu in order to attract more customers and make more gross profit. Also, many owners are worry about security risks, maintenance, education, and so on. Here are some advantages of ipad menu such as paperless, electronic receipts, tips, categorized menu, suggestions, reports, inventory, speedy orders and picking a plate. Because of eliminating print, there are no more receipts or written signatures. It is the reason of paperless. And customers can quickly calculate their waitress tips on the ipad. Also, the guests can use the ipad to design their own meal. If guests have some questions about the wine according to the food preference, Ipad menu will answer it. Another reason is the ipad menu should increase the speedy orders. The orders will transfer to kitchen in seconds and save the time for waiting the waitress to order the food. At the same time, if the restaurant is busy, guests will play some games on Ipad to wait for their food, which instead of complains. At last, because of saving time and labor cost, the restaurant should be save cost and easy to collect data of the restaurant. There are still some disadvantages. For example, every customer wants an individual iPad as their own menu, so restaurants must purchase numerous iPads with one per seat. Because of this reason, the restaurant should be care for the thefts. And the managers need to train every waitress to use the ipad menu. The expense should increase in training. Also, some guests do not know how to use ipad menu and the technology is not suit for them. At last, you need to pay more in maintenance.
